Anything She Wants Page 22

“She would have poisoned us.” He laid his hand over their baby. “This. You know that don't you?”

She nodded. “I do. But just because my head knows something, doesn’t stop my heart from hurting.”

“I’m so proud of you, Keely. A lot of people wouldn’t have had your strength to walk away. To leave the dark and walk into the light.”

“Your love makes me strong, Nick. Stronger than I ever knew I could be.”

They walked some more. A few gulls circled by, then landed on the sand. They always reminded her of Sea World, she couldn’t wait to take their child there someday.

“If it’s a boy, I want to name him Frederick. Is that okay with you?”

Tears swam in his eyes and his voice was a little shaky when he answered. “Very much so. Mom and Dad will be so touched.”

“I love them, Nick. I really do. They’ve been so great to me.”

He kissed the top of her head, the sun was starting to set and there weren’t as many boats out on the water now as there had been earlier in the day.

“They love, you too. Mom told me once she’d never been happier for any of her children than she was for me, because I’d found you.”

She hit him playfully and caught a tear before it fell.

“You’re just trying to make me cry so you won’t be crying alone.”

They laughed together instead of crying as she rested her head back against his shoulder.

“You’re my heart, Keely.” He turned her and pulled her into a passionate kiss that left her breathless. She placed her one palm flat against his cheek.

“And you’re my heart’s song, Nick. You always will be.”

She kissed him again and her heart did indeed sing.
