Lover, Stranger

She had known all along there was goodness in him.

Grace turned when the doorbell sounded and reluctantly left her place at the window to answer it, figuring it was Myra trying to talk her out of the resignation Grace had tendered after her last debriefing. But it was time for a change. Time to try her hand at being a lawyer, which was what she’d always wanted to be.

She pulled back the door. “I’m not changing my mind, Myra—”

Ethan stood on the other side, dressed in jeans and a dark cotton shirt, a raincoat slung over his shoulder. His dark hair glistened with moisture as he gazed down at her uncertainly.

“I wasn’t sure this was the right place,” he finally said.

Grace stepped back to let him enter. “How did you find me?”

“Some of my friends at the DEA office in Houston helped track you down.”

Grace’s heart quickened. “Then you know?”

“A couple of agents were waiting for me at Hunter’s clinic down in Mexico. I guess they somehow figured who could face a cold-blooded killer without showing fear, but one who trembled at his kiss.

He pulled back, staring into her eyes. “The connection is still there, Grace. Do you feel it?”

  “Yes.” She smiled. “Oh, yes.”

“The question now is, what are we going to do about it?”

She looked up at him slyly. “You could kiss me again.” After he complied, she said, “We have some unfinished business, you and L”

Her boldness thrilled him. “We’ve got all night. There’s nowhere in the world I have to be.”

She slipped her arms around his neck. “As a matter of fact, I find myself in the same situation. I’m not an FBI agent anymore,” she told him. “I resigned today.”

He lifted his brows at that, but instead of asking her why, he said, “I’m not a DEA agent anymore, either. I wouldn’t be much good in the field without a memory.”

Grace sighed deeply, but it wasn’t an unhappy sound. More one of relief. “So what are we going to do?”

He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. “I don’t know, but we have the rest of our lives to figure it out. I do know one thing. I want to get to know you, Grace. I want to know everything about you. The last few days don’t seem real somehow. I want to spend time with you without looking over my shoulder. Without wondering if this moment will be our last.”

“Wow,” Grace breathed. “You want all that? And here I thought we were just going to spend the night together.”

“That’s a start,” he said seriously. “Believe me, that’ll be one hell of a start.”
