Jake pushed indentations into the soft metal of the probe with his fingers and fastened the grapples into the holes. The two vampires bound themselves securely to the craft and tested their anchors in every direction. They had a long voyage ahead of them.
Jake kissed Madeleine's eyelids as she settled down to sleep. "When we wake up, love," he whispered, "we'll be somewhere different."
"A place of our own."
"A place for us. Are you frightened?"
"No. I'm with you, aren't I?" Jake smiled. They wrapped their hands together and fell into peaceful sleep.
The probe sped on out of the solar system.
Into the future.
