I have the impression that there is a lot more she’d like to say, but she seems to be biting her tongue to be polite. I tell her about my new job assignment in Cologne and that I will be leaving the next day. She nods her head in agreement.
“That is probably a really good idea for you to take your mind off things,” she says. “And Cologne has a great night life.”
As if I was interested in night life. That is the last thing I’m thinking about right now. I’m really not interested in another fling. I raise my hands to signal my aversion to that last thought.
“Oh God no, I want to be left alone. I’m not at all interested in Cologne’s night life at the present.”
She puts her arms around me. “I know that you don’t feel like that right now. But who knows, maybe at some point you will feel like going out and distracting yourself.”
We sit together all afternoon and tell each other what has happened in the weeks we’ve been apart.
Her ex turned out to be a real creep a few months ago. He had other girlfriends while he was together with Susan. And it took her months to find out due to a strange coincidence. I can remember how furious and disappointed she had been at the time. Today I can understand her even better than at the time.
I cannot stop talking about Shamar. I talk about all the things and tell her everything we experienced together. And I cannot stop crying. Susan puts her arms around me and comforts me. She is as calm as can be and will wait until I feel better.
Much later, we decide to have the pizza service deliver us a couple of pizzas. A pretty good idea to distract me. The idea works for the afternoon while we sit in my living room, and Susan tells me about all of the exams she had during the last few weeks. One of the exams even took place in the emergency room, where they watched how Susan treated various patients. Apparently one of them was so close that she squirted blood all over him, and Susan roars with laughter as she tells me how shocked the guy reacted. Apparently he hadn’t spent much time with patients in the past few years.
Then she had the oral tests while they asked her all sorts of questions about the patients she treated. I think to myself that Susan is a born physician. Even when she was a child, she was constantly taking care of other people, even pets. I’m thoroughly convinced that Susan will be an excellent doctor and will have a great career.
The doorbell rings again and this time it is a package my company has sent. The delivery man hands me a large brown envelope that contains all of my travel documents. Tomorrow morning at 7 am my trip begins.
Susan bids my farewell in the evening, and I pack the last things for my trip tomorrow.
