He kept going. Slow and hard. Harder than she’d ever been taken before. Should have known she would prefer it like this to soft and gentle. The lovemaking was intense, like the man. She was moaning with every thrust. Like before, Druze made plenty of grunting noises. It turned her on even more to know that he was enjoying this just as much as she was. His gaze drifted to her boobs, which were jerking with every hard shove inside her.
He swallowed hard, locking eyes with her. “Fucking perfect,” he growled, barely sounding human. Somehow, even that was a turn-on too. He tilted his head back and closed his eyes like he was savoring her. He made a groaning noise. She touched his chest, feeling the scales that had erupted there. He was so stunning that it almost took her breath away.
The coiling sensation became almost too much. The bed made a creaking noise. Slow and deep had turned to hard and fast. His balls slapped against her with every thrust. There was a wet suction noise from where their bodies joined. Even that excited her. She dug her fingers into his arm. Her boobs jiggled so hard, but she didn’t care. The headboard hit against the wall. A picture fell and broke. She didn’t care about that either. Nothing mattered in that moment.
“Druze,” she sobbed his name as the coiling reached its peak. Her hips jerked and her head fell back. A rush of ecstasy raced through her, starting in her belly. She gave a yell as everything let go. She pointed her toes and gripped his arms even tighter.
Then Druze was groaning. Then he was roaring. He jerked into her. The sound of their lovemaking reverberating around the room. Slapping, sucking, panting and moaning. The sounds they both made were laced with intense pleasure. Druze slowed, his hips rolled against her as he wrung out every last drop of pleasure from her. His frown was back, his mouth pursed. His eyes on hers. Locked together with the intensity of the moment. The movements slowed until he stilled altogether, staying joined with her. Druze was breathing hard. Then again, so was she.
He put his forehead to hers for a few moments.
Then he unhooked her thighs, putting them around his waist. Druze rested his head on her chest. Britt ran her fingers through the dark strands. She wasn’t sure what to say. Where to go from there? Her only request had been that he didn’t push her away after. Would he though? He might since he was wired to do just that.
“Can I get you that hot milk now?” Druze asked.
Britt couldn’t help it when laughter bubbled free. Druze lifted his head. He was grinning down at her. “What is it? I’ll get it for you.” he raised his brows, looking serious.
“Look at that, you are sweet after all. I don’t need milk anymore. Not after that.” Her eyelids felt droopy. Her whole body was buzzing and yet sated.
“Good.” Druze pulled out of her on a soft grunt. He turned her around and snuggled into her back, putting his arm around her in a firm hold.
Brittney bit down on her lip, trying to contain her excitement. She couldn’t help but smile. This answered her question.
Chapter 22
“This is unacceptable!” Stone yelled. His face was red.
“Why?” Brittney asked, even though Druze had asked her not to get involved. She couldn’t just stand there and watch Stone tear Druze a new one. It wasn’t fair. They were in this together.
Stone ignored her. “After I asked you not to fuck this up, you still managed it.” He pointed a finger at Druze. “You couldn’t just focus on the job at hand, could you? I suppose you always did want a human.” He muttered the last, intent on hurting Druze who looked down at the floor. Like he had something to be ashamed of.
Druze didn’t answer. His hands were fisted at his sides. His body was full of tension, but he didn’t say anything.
“You will end up being responsible for more lives lost,” Stone snarled. “Do you realize that? Or don’t you give a fuck?” He looked like he was going to physically attack Druze.
Enough was enough! Stone was being a dick.
“No, he won’t!” Britt stepped forward. “We are still capable of doing our jobs. The plans are firmly in place on how to deal with every eventuality. We are going over everything with a finetoo—”
“You are leaving, Dr. Baker.”
“No, I’m not.” She put her hands on her hips.
Stone narrowed his eyes. “Excuse me.”
“You said yourself that Vicky and your mate Cordia are comfortable with me as their ob-gyn. Why would my relationship with Druze affect how I do my job?”
“Your focus is elsewhere,” Stone growled. “You clearly don’t care about Cordia, or Vicky. I can’t take any chances with…”
“That is simply not true. As to my focus being elsewhere, maybe outside of work hours perhaps but when I’m on the job…when we’re on the job it’s a different story. Also, there is nothing in my contract that specifically mentions I can’t fraternize with colleagues.”
“Druze is your superior. You can’t be fucking your—”
“Watch how you speak to my female,” Druze roared, looking like he was after blood.
Storm took a step back, anger morphing to shock. Rage quickly overtook everything. “Your female? Your fucking female? Is that so? And Amethyst is just a fond memory. Your promise to make things right as well? It hasn’t been that long since—”
“Eight years is a long time,” Britt interjected. “It doesn’t mean that Druze has forgotten Amethyst. Or that he didn’t love her.” Shit! She shouldn’t have said that. It wasn’t her place.
“I can’t believe you actually want to be with this sorry excuse. You know he left my sister for a human?” he spat the word. “You know he caused her death because he’s a selfish fucking prick who hasn’t changed one bit?”
“He is one of the least selfish people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.” She took Druze’s hand and squeezed. “I’m completely and totally in love with him because of how sweet and kind he is. When we first met, he told me he was neither of those things. He’s tried to convince me of that ever since, but I can see it’s not true.”
“You’re blinded by lust,” Stone spat.
“Have you ever stopped to think that you might be blinded by the pain of your loss? I’m sorry you lost your twin. I can’t begin to imagine how that must feel. Have you stopped to think that—”
“Britt.” Druze squeezed her hand. She looked up at him and he shook his head.
She pushed out a breath. “I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying here,” she spoke more to Druze than to Stone.
“How fucking sweet! I can’t believe you want him even though you know what he did. What kind of a person are you, Dr. Baker? Maybe the two of you deserve one another.”
“Brittney is a wonderful person.” He let go of her hand and took a step forward. “You can say whatever you want about me, but don’t you dare speak badly of her. Do you hear me?”
Stone glared at Druze for a few tense moments. “I will check your contract, Dr. Baker. If what you say is true—another fuck up of yours—then you will have to go, Druze.”
“I won’t be pushed out.” Druze stood tall. “I am on this team. I busted my butt to qualify. I worked just as hard as Dr. Baker and Dr. Burgess. I agree with Dr. Baker, our focus is strictly on ensuring the safety of our patients. Our relationship will in no way affect the quality of our research and output. I, ultimately, report to Granite. He will have to remove me from this assignment personally. Dr. Baker is Cordia’s doctor. Myself and Dr. Burgess are secondary. As long as Cordia and Vicky are comfortable with Dr. Baker, then I will stay out of the way unless it can’t be helped and then only to consult. To bring someone else in now would be detrimental. I strongly urge you to rethink that decision. To talk with your mate first before doing so.”
“I can’t believe this!” Stone spat. He raked a hand through his hair. There were dark smudges under his eyes which were bloodshot. He looked like he had lost weight. “I can’t believe you, Druze. I’m bitterly disappointed, yet again. If anything happens to Cordia, it’s on you.” he pointed
at Druze. “Do you hear me? On you!” he snarled.
“That’s not fair.” Britt couldn’t stand there and listen to this. She felt for Stone. She could see he was stressed and that he loved his mate but…no! Just no!
“It’s fine.” Druze put his hand to her back.
“The two of you should leave now.” Stone pointed at the door.
“Okay,” Druze said.
“I don’t like this at all,” Stone added.
“We will keep working hard. We will be there for Cordia, I swear to you.” Druze tried.
“Pity your word isn’t worth much.”
“You’re wrong!” Britt half-yelled.
“Let’s go.” Druze put his arm around her, ushering her to the door.
They walked in silence for the few minutes it took to get to the lab. It was still twenty minutes before Craig would arrive. They had set the meeting early with Stone, wanting to inform him about the new development, namely them and the fact that they were together for real. It wasn’t pretend anymore. “I’m sorry,” she blurted as they walked through the door.
Druze put his arms around her. “Thank you,” he pushed out.
“No, I did the opposite of what you asked. I messed that up.”
He let her go so that he could look her in the eyes. “You stood up for me. I appreciate that and more than you will ever know.”
“You were right about how angry he would be. He’s blinded by hatred.”
Druze nodded. “He’s also very afraid and scared to death but yeah, he still hates my guts. It’s not as bad as it used to be. You should have seen how much he hated me soon after Amethyst passed. I took several beatings.”
“He beat you?” she widened her eyes.
Druze nodded once. “In many ways we are a base species. It helped ease his suffering, so I took it.”
She leaned up and kissed him. Britt pulled back. “You are such a good guy. I can’t believe I ever thought differently. I wish you’d tell him already. Stone deserves to know, Druze. I would want to know.”
“No.” He shook his head. “I don’t want him to think badly of his sister.”
“She was sick. Depression is an illness. He wouldn’t think any less of her. Do you think less of her?”
“Of course not.”
“You need to trust that he’s a better person than that.”
“I worry that he will struggle to cope if he doesn’t have someone to blame. Or if he blames Amethyst.” His Adam’s apple worked. “I’ll figure it out.”
“I’m glad you didn’t fire me again.”
Druze smiled. God but he was beautiful when he smiled. His eyes brightened. His dimples came out to play. “Me too.” He leaned in and was about to kiss her when the door opened.
“Hello, hello,” Craig announced, sounding like he was grinning broadly.
Britt turned to him and yep, he was grinning alright, from ear to ear. “All I have to say is that it’s about time you two got it together.”
Druze let her go. “It’s time to get to work, Dr. Burgess, Dr. Baker…you too.”
Craig winked at her. Britt bit down on her lip to stop from giggling like a schoolgirl. Then they did just that, they got down to it.
Chapter 23
Ten days later…
Vicky breathed through the contraction. Talon held her hand. “Is the pain worse? Are you feeling ill in any way, sweetheart? Do you want water?”
Vicky groaned, clutching her belly. She squeezed her eyes shut.
“The pain seems worse to me.” Talon’s eyes were wide. “It’s definitely worse.” He was also sweating profusely despite the air-conditioner being on.
“It’s normal at this stage,” Brittney said. At least, she hoped it was normal. They’d been back to the Feral lands and the general consensus was that when labor stalled for a period before starting up again, that generally meant clutch sickness. No one had mentioned it on that first visit because they hadn’t thought it pertinent. It was though. Very much so. At least, the team was certain of it. They had devised a whole new potential diagnosis and protocol, based on the latest information.
Vicky clutched her belly which was pulling tight. Her contractions were becoming more severe. That was good! It had to be good.
“I need to speak with you, Dr. Baker…in private please.” Talon wiped his brow with the back of his arm. He looked like he was on the verge of a full blown panic attack, which wouldn’t be good for Vicky to witness. Maybe a little talk was in order.
Craig must have picked up on the tension because he stepped forward. “I’ll keep an eye on Vicky,” he said. Druze stayed out of the way. The agreement was that as long as things stayed smooth, he and Craig would be back up.
“Yes, thanks.” She could see that Vicky’s contraction was subsiding.
“It’s been too long,” Talon said as soon as they reached the hallway. “This is how it happened before. It went on and on and on and the pains got worse and worse.” He paced away from her and then paced back. His face looked stricken. “It’s happening again. Her pain is getting worse.” Talon was panicking. He was full on and all out panicking. He raked a hand through his hair. “I just know it. I can tell. I can see it.”
“No,” she quickly interjected. “it’s not the same as last time. It also hasn’t been that long, only four and a half hours,” she decided to be direct. “That the pains are getting stronger is normal too. I want to do another check of her cervix, but I suspect she’s in active labor and will be ready to start pushing soon. There was a long break between contractions with the women who suffered from clutch sickness. The lull lasted anywhere from a few hours to a day or two, like the initial labor pains had been a mistake. The team are pretty sure we know what the cause was. That hasn’t happened with Vicky though. Things are progressing normally. It’s—”
“Are you sure?” he grabbed her hand so hard she had to bite back a yell.
“Based on the information I received, yes. If she were pregnant with a human fetus, yes, for sure.” She spoke in a high-pitched voice, breathing out on a sigh when he let her hand go.
Talon rubbed his face. “They’re not human though,” he growled, sounding frustrated. “My children are Feral. Eggs.” He was still panicking, still pacing while he spoke. “My female is a human. She’s fragile.” He choked on the last, sounding like he might be crying. Talon turned around. Crap, he was crying. Just a tear or two, then he rubbed his face and pulled himself together.
“Let’s go back inside. Your mate needs you. We are ready to deal with anything, should it happen.” Britt wanted so desperately to tell him everything would be okay. Truth was, she had no idea. Things could change in an instant. “So far this does not look like clutch sickness.” She was sure to stick to the facts.
“Okay.” He nodded once. “You’re right.”
“Of course, I am.” She was sure to sound as convincing as possible. “You need to stay strong for your mate. She can’t see you fall apart.” She touched the side of his arm. “Let me know if you need another talk and we’ll come outside for a few minutes.”
“Okay.” Talon finally nodded. He swallowed hard, taking a couple of deep breaths. Then he nodded once more, putting a more neutral expression on his face. “I’m better now.”
Vicky was squatting on the bed when they entered. Craig was holding her hand, giving her words of encouragement. He looked relieved when he spotted them. “Vicky felt the urge to push.”
“Oh, thank god. Where were you?” Vicky squeaked. “It’s coming. Our egg. Our baby.” She looked excited.
“It’s coming!” Talon yelled. “Are you sure?” he grabbed her hand, taking over from Craig who still looked stressed.
“I was about to fetch you,” Druze said, also looking tense.
“Here comes another one,” Vicky groaned.
The last time she had checked, Vicky was only six centimeters dilated. That was an hour before. Britt wanted to check again to be sure, but this wasn’t the right time. “A
re you sure you have the urge to push?”
“Yes,” Vicky groaned. “I can feel it.”
“You’re sure you don’t…need the toilet?” she tried to put it delicately. This wouldn’t be the first time that had happened.
“Very sure.” Vicky grit her teeth. “There is a heaviness…down there.” she looked down, between her splayed thighs.
“Are you comfortable like that?”
“Yes…this feels best.” Her face was pinched with pain.
“Okay then. Push if you’re ready.” They could always clean up, if need be. Britt hoped to god this was an egg.
Vicky nodded once, bearing down. Then it was there. An egg. Britt gave a yell. So did Vicky.
It was very oval. More oblong and perfectly white with brown speckles. It was bigger than she had expected. Her mouth hung open.
“You did it!” Talon shouted. He threw his arms around Vicky.
Britt had to pull herself together. There were procedures she needed to follow. As documented by their team. She touched the egg with a gloved hand, being as careful as possible. “The eggshell is malleable. It is very much like thick, yet soft leather.”
Vicky groaned again, clutching her stomach. Talon whispered endearments to his mate. That, and words of encouragement. “I can already feel the next one.” She groaned. “I need to push again.”
“Go ahead, Vicky.” Britt said. “You are doing great. “The circumference of the egg is most certainly bigger than that of the head of a full-term fetus. One and a half times, in fact,” she added, putting away the measuring tape. She locked eyes with Craig. “I think you were right about the cause of clutch sickness.”
Craig nodded. “I do too.”
