Germanicus crossed Varus’ earlier route as he returned. More than half a decade had passed but the forest remained strewn with the wreckage and bones of the fallen army. He commanded his men to collect and bury the remains as best they could. He also ordered a monument erected, honouring the memory of Varus’ lost army.

Arminius fought a series of subsequent battles against the Romans. Although he never again inflicted a crushing defeat on Rome, the victories he won convinced the Imperial High Command that the potential cost in manpower and materiel far outweighed any gains which might be gained by reinvading the territories east of the River Rhine. The river and a chain of reinforced forts became a solid bulwark; the official northern border of the Imperial Empire.

Rome never again sought to expand eastwards beyond the mighty Rhine.

Beyond the new border, Arminius continued to build on his vision of a united Germany, but he died over a decade later under mysterious circumstances. It was rumoured he was poisoned by members of his own family during bitter internal feuding over power and Arminius’ future as a nation builder. There was deep suspicion as to his ultimate goal; it was believed Arminius wanted to weld the wild tribes of Greater Germany together, and become their all-powerful king. DB

And what if the deposing of Saddam Hussein left one of his most ruthless military leaders still at large, and actively seeking a customer for Iraq’s only nuclear bomb? . . .

  Inca Sun

Chronicles of Sir Richard Starkey #2

Sir Richard and his giant servant Quinn begin their next great adventure, aboard the Privateer ‘The SEA Hawk’, in the treacherous waters off the Caribbean and South American coastline. Their heretic English Queen, Elizabeth I, has secretly commanded Sir Richard to prowl the high seas in search of King Phillip II of Spain’s fabulously wealthy treasure convoys. They sail from the New World for Spain laden with gold and silver ripped from the Conquistador’s mines in Peru and Mexico; dug from the dark earth by their cruelly treated Inca and Mayan slaves.

What Richard doesn’t know when he accepts his latest Royal commission is that his arch nemesis - Don Rodrigo Salvador Torrez has become Governor of King Phillip’s Mexican province of Veracruz.

One thing is certain, mere gold cannot pay the debt of honour that exists between the two men, since their first encounter on Malta during the great siege. The only currency which will settle the terrible debt will be the loser’s noble lifeblood....
