A Bundle of Mannies Page 65

Walker’s hand closed around mine, stilling my tapping fingers. “Chill, Sebastian, before you make us all nervous.” He used his other hand to push the double stroller back and forth. “If you get the twins riled, we’ll have a real mess on our hands.”

The babies slumbered on, despite my nerves, until it was our turn to enter the chambers. Walker led the way, pushing the stroller, and Graham followed, nearly bouncing in his excitement.

Our attorney, who had arrived late, making the judge’s schedule a lucky break, waved me in ahead of him. He’d assured us the hearing was a formality, but as we faced Judge Teresa Harmen, a severe-looking woman in her sixties, my heart hammered. I never wanted to let Graham down.

“Good afternoon, everyone,” she said. “I understand we have an adoption today. Are you the young man who is adopting a new dad?”

She had him at good afternoon. By the time Graham told her our family story and we completed the process, we were running late for our flight. But elated. We took enough selfies of our new complete family to fill an album.

We did make our flight, ready to go to Maine to visit the last family I’d cared for in their island castle. We’d proposed staying in the mainland cabins owned by our friends’ uncle, but they insisted on hosting us. I couldn’t wait to see Rose, Violet, and Daisy and big brother RJ. Like us, they were a blended family, and I had no doubt RJ would make Graham feel at home.

It was going to be amazing.

I rested my head on Walker’s shoulder as we flew away from the sunset and into the darkness. “Last time I made this trip, I had no idea what waited for me. I thought I’d always be a plus-one in other people’s families. Someone who came and went, barely remembered.”

“Enzo and Charlie and the kids remember you.”

“Well, they all remember me, I guess, but I never got to stay. Until I found my family.”

“So glad you found us,” he said, kissing the top of my head.

  “Me, too.”
