I did not share the exchange with my clients, but I was nervous that the owner would discriminate against my buyers on the basis of race should they decide to write an offer. If they did, I felt that I would need to share the conversation with the listing agent and explain my fears, as discrimination is not only against the law, it is a violation of the REALTOR Code of Ethics.
In the end, my clients opted for a different home, but I have often wondered what would have happened had they pursued the purchase…

I just finished reading Marti Kilby’s “Home Buying Power.” What a fantastic guide for home buyers! It can be a life saver for first-time buyers and a great review for experienced buyers and sellers. This book provides an easy-to-follow explanation of terms and procedures. I love the Savvy Shopper notes at the end of the chapters and the short stories based on her experience. Marti is right on!

Before reading Marti’s book, “Home Buying Power: the Savvy Shopper’s Guide to Paying Less and Getting More in any Real Estate Market,” I would’ve been considered the opposite of savvy. More like woefully uneducated. I heard friends who were buying their first homes using terms like escrow, closing costs, PMI, all sorts of words and acronyms that sounded completely foreign to me. I knew one day I wanted to buy my own home, and in order for that to happen, I needed to be informed. Thanks to Marti and her clear writing and relatable examples, I now feel I can take on the home-buying process with confidence! She walks you through the entire journey, thoroughly explaining each step along the way. I now understand all of the terminology that used to confuse me, and I learned so much more beyond vocabulary. This book not only gave me a better understanding of what to expect when buying a home, it is also a great tool to have with me when the home-buying dream becomes a reality. Marti makes you feel like you have a trusted friend by your side, guiding you to get the most out of your experience. I highly recommend “Home Buying Power” if you want to be fearless and knowledgeable when making what is most likely the biggest investment of your life.
