The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East Page 35

by Sandy Tolan

To the friends in Bulgaria, Israel, and the Arab world who fed me, found me places to rest, and provided a few laughs and rays of hope between the painful moments of history, big and small: I'm grateful.

For Lamis, who opened up worlds, and the Andoni family, who showed me the generosity and warmth of an Arab family: I will always be grateful. Thank you, Margaret, Reem, Jack, Wido, Tala, Lana, Nabil, Missy, Laila, Charlie, and Michael.

To my brother, Yam, and all the aforementioned Tolans, to Tolan spouses, nephews, and nieces: I love you all.

Finally, to Bashir Khairi and Dalia Eshkenazi Landau, who sat with me dozens of times over hundreds of hours, listening to the smallest questions, sometimes with disbelief ("How do /know what color my tie was in July 1967?"), I can only say: In more ways than one, this book would not have existed without you. Alf shukran. Toda roba.

  Thank you.
