Dragon Heart Page 15

by Amelia Jade

It was like the first time he’d seen her, the day of the talent show registrations. When she’d finally looked up to address the seated crowd, Rokk had lost all sense of time. Everything in the world evaporated. His focus narrowed down to her, and only her.

“I missed you,” she whispered in his ear, her words caressing him like the soft embrace of a warm spring wind.

“And I you,” he returned, his speech feeling stilted and formal in the midst of so much happiness. How was it that she always had this effect on him? They were together now and would be forever more, but she still managed to reduce him to a nervous, bumbling wreck of a fool at times.

And that was why he knew she was the one for him.

“Why are you all dressed up?” she asked suddenly, stepping back to look him up and down suspiciously. “What’s going on?”

Rokk licked his lips, mouth suddenly dry. “Linny…”

  He froze.

“Rokk? What are you doing? You must be a thousand degrees in that suit.” She frowned. “Since when do you even wear a suit?”

He snatched up her hand and held it in his. “I want to show you something,” he managed to squeak out, his voice breaking in the middle like an anxious teenager. Could this be going any worse?

“Ookayyy,” she dragged out, letting herself be led around the helicopter.

The movement jarred his tongue loose and he suddenly began to spew words forth at an alarming pace. “Linny, ever since I saw you in the hangar that day, I’ve known we were meant to be together.”

A sliver of possible recognition dawned in her eyes, but Linny didn’t react.

“I just knew it; that’s how dragons are. It’s taken me a little while longer however, to be able to quantify the why. To find words that properly expressed what you meant to me, and more importantly, why I fell in love with you.”

Her eyes grew shinier as he spoke, but she admirably did not start to tear up. That wasn’t her style. Rokk had a sneaking suspicion that might change.

“You are the most amazing person I know,” he continued. “You’re a giver, first and foremost. You see when I need something, whether it be you, a hug, personal space, whatever it may be, and you just give it to me. No questions asked. Your trust in me is incredible, and I can only hope to be worthy of it. I strive every day to be the best me that I can, because that’s what you deserve.”

She was smiling now. Rokk paused at the edge of the helicopter, keeping the sight beyond just out of her vision.

“You’re also strong. Smart. Your drive to better yourself is a shining beacon for people to strive for, and I admire you for it more every day. I love you for the way you don’t complain when my chest hair tickles your nose when you lie on me. I love you even despite your insistence on telling me a story I’ve heard three times already, simply because I know you do it because you like talking to me.”

  Linny was giggling.

“I love you because you are the one person I know I can turn to when I’m hurting or sad. The person I can trust to show that side of me too. We share our struggles and we fight our battles together. You complete me in ways I never knew I was missing, and sometimes, late at night while you’re snoring I watch you, and give thanks to whatever power there is that I found you.”

Her laughter stopped abruptly. “I do not—”

“Shh,” he said. “I’m being romantic.”

“That’s not what I’d call romantic, but—”

Rokk cut her off again with a smile. “You’ve brought meaning and direction to my life. A life I am ecstatic to share with you. A life that is no longer mine, but I can happily say is ours. There’s just one thing missing, and I’d like to give you that now, if you would let me.”

Linny looked around at the very public, open area. “Rokk, look. I know we said we both want kids, but now is not the time for that.”

He choked back laughter and tugged on her hands, at last pulling her out from behind the helicopter, pointing at the hill beyond. While she did that, he fumbled around in his pocket for the last item he needed. His heart jumped when he didn’t find it.

Glancing across the ground at Pyne while Linny gasped, he patted both sides.

Pyne was frantically tapping at his chest. What was he trying to say? Oh, right! He’d switched location. Rokk reached into his breast pocket, pulled forth the ring he’d had fashioned, and dropped to one knee as Linny turned away from the giant lettering on the hill.

“Linny Cantor, will you marry me?”

She was crying now. His strong, hard-as-nails mate could only withstand so much before she too broke down.

“Yes,” she whispered so quietly even his dragon hearing could barely pick it up. “Yes. Yes! A thousand times yes.”

He slipped the ring fashioned around a dragon scale onto her finger and rose, while in front of the hill people shouted and clapped, popped champagne and set off fireworks.

Linny pulled him to his feet and this time she had no problem kissing him in front of everyone. There was no shame.

Though she did slap his hand away from her butt.

“I’m not wearing my leotard,” she teased, before kissing him even more thoroughly than the first.
