“You wanted to say something to me?” Ella just wanted this over with. She was already thinking of what she would do with her half of the money. She was glad that place was a month to month rental because she couldn’t see herself trying to stay there without him. There were too many memories even though they hadn’t been there that long.
He turned to her, and she could see that now he was trying to sort out what he was going to say. She was trying to give him time to get his words together, but it was hard. “Do it like a band-aid… just rip it off.”
“What are you talking about? Ella, you have been talking crazy since you signed your papers. If you want to be on your own now since you have the freedom to do and go wherever you want just say that. I get it, and I’ll be on my way. I don’t want your money.”
Could she have read the whole situation with ‘Milllie’ wrong? “I’m glad that I’m a free woman in terms of the justice system, but I wasn’t trying to be free of you.”
“I guess that’s good to hear. Have you given some thought to where you want to go after this? I know you said home, but I would have thought you’d want something more exciting.”
“Being with you is exciting enough. I mean, you were there, and we get pretty crazy.” She was happy that her words seemed to put a smile on his face. They had been having some intense moments. “Is there somewhere you’d like to go?”
“Well, I’ve always wanted to go to Belize for my honeymoon,” he said looking at her like she was supposed to have an answer, but she must have her wires all crossed because she couldn’t find anything to say. His honeymoon?
“That seems like a great place for a honeymoon if you were having one.” She sat there and watched him watch her for a few seconds more before she got what he was trying to ask. “Are you asking me to marry you?”
“It’s the simplest way to get to the honeymoon,” he answered.
She was so excited she didn’t know what to do with herself. “Where did all that come from? Just a few minutes ago, you were whispering sweet nothings to Millie, and now you’re proposing to me. I want to say yes, but I don’t want you to marry me for the wrong reasons.”
“I want to marry you for all the right reasons. I love you. I love being around you, touching you, talking with you, laughing with you, working out problems with you. You are more than I’d ever thought I’d find, and I want to keep being around you for the rest of my life.”
When Tyson had something to say, he said it well—she had to say that—but she still didn’t understand the vibe she’d gotten from him in the office.
“When you were in signing your paperwork to make you a free woman, I was talking to Millie about getting a special license for us to get married. I told her I hadn’t talked to you about it yet, but I was hopeful about your reply. She is getting it all together for us.” Tyson was watching her, and she started to feel silly about what she’d been thinking earlier, but though that might have accounted for their whispers when she came in, it didn’t account for the other woman’s flushed face.
“What was she all jumpy and nervous about when I came in?”
“Apparently she loves weddings and can’t keep a secret for shit. She was afraid she would let the cat out of the bag and ruin everything. I know that you don’t have a lot of family, and I don’t keep in contact with mine, so I wanted to get married here.”
“In the courthouse?” She couldn’t believe he’d picked here.
“I know how you hate this place, but it’s not the place you don’t like; it’s the memories. I don’t want you to be held hostage by a building. Let’s make some new memories here and put that uncomfortable feeling you have about this place to rest. What do you say about that?”
“I say that this conversation is more pleasant than the last one we had on a park bench.”
The full belly laugh she got from him made her heart smile.
“If you wanted to do this, we could be married by this afternoon, and we can go to Belize tonight.”
“Do you really want to go to Belize?” She wondered if this was something he really wanted or if that just something he thought up.
“I really want to tie myself to you legally, but I thought you’d like the place, and I wanted to see you enjoy yourself to the fullest.”
“Do I want to marry you? Yes, but I’d like to go back to our house and fuck my new husband within an inch of his life and then make plans for what we are going to do after that. A trip to Belize would be a beautiful and wonderful treat, but the way I feel right now, we wouldn’t even see the light of day, so that would be a wasted trip.”
“You wonder why I love you? We are sexually matched so perfectly that the other things just fall into place. Being with you is like being with a prettier version of myself.”
“Only you would say that, but it’s funny because I feel exactly the same way.”
“So to the future, Mrs. Adler. Are you ready to take the plunge with me and see what our future holds?” Tyson brought out a ring box and opened it for her to look inside.
“You brought me a ring? I thought this was a last minute thing, but you actually had a plan?” She couldn’t help but sound surprised, but he really caught her off guard with the beautiful princess cut diamond that had to be at least two carats.
“Honey, I always have a plan, but when I thought about this I had a few in case the first, second, and third didn’t go the way I planned. If you didn’t want to be married, I would have accepted that but I’d have been hanging around you until you said you didn’t want me to do that anymore. I’m glad I didn’t have to go to that plan.”
She put her hand out and waited for him to place the engagement on her finger. Looking at it, she admired the cut of the stone and the brilliance of the color.
“One thing we have to do after the wedding, future Mrs. Adler, is to get ourselves a new bike because we need to ride.” Tyson broke her away from her study of the beautiful ring.
“If it’s with you, I’m ready to go anywhere.”
Judging by the kiss he gave her, he really liked that answer.
