by Melissa Blue

The tears came back and fell, in big drops. Tonight he didn't mind the tears. They weren't from sorrow or despair. She hadn't let him go. She'd tried to take care of him and show him she wanted to stay.

“You don't have to run anymore, Sophie.”

“I don't want to.” Her expression softened. “I never want to run again.”

He took that as a legit “yes” to kiss her. When she didn't protest or push him back, he deepened the mating. Made it long too. Kissing her—how had he lived this long without her? Eventually though he had to let her breathe.

She murmured, “You always steal kisses.”

  “I'm your thief.”

She rested her head on his. “I love you.”

He swayed when the words hit. “You don't—”

“Look at me, Wade. You could always see me and every lie and truth. Look at me.”

He did and what he saw shook him. Before, every time, she'd told him this time she'd stay, he'd seen nothing but doubt, wariness—her eyes tracking to left of his gaze, a tightness around her mouth.

He'd come to her willing to convince her any way he could that he wouldn't hurt her. He wouldn't wait. He'd push and prod and fight with her, fight for her. He hadn't expected...

His breath refused to steady. Her gaze was clear. She held his stare. Her fingers curled into the hair at the nape of his neck like she didn't want to let him go, ever.

“You mean it,” he whispered. Nothing louder could get past the tightness in his throat.

She nodded. “I will be your home that way you can never get lost. I won't let you, not for long.”

God. He wanted this, but he had to be sure. “Where's Cal?”

“He's moved out and moved in with one of his cousins.”

He grunted. “I guess I won't have to kill him.”

  “Wade...”

He drew his thumb along her jawline. “Are you sure? I'm...I'm—I can be a burden, and I don't want to ask you to take me on.”

“You didn't. You wouldn't and that's why I love you, Wade. But you have to understand, when I look at you, I don't see a burden. I see a man who will always fight the monsters. He's too ornery not to. A man who will love with his everything.” She brushed her mouth against his. “Love me with your everything and I will do the same. Even when you can't.”

He couldn't do anything else anyway. That's just not how he was wired. He kissed her again. It was filled with another wordless conversation.

I will love you for eternity.

I promise to never make you eat my cooking.

  Be my home. Always.

  I'm your home. Always.

That time when he broke the kiss, there weren't anymore tears. She brushed her fingertips over his face. “I love you, Wade.”

He shifted her on his lap, considering what to say to that. “Do you have any questions?” She shook her head. “Any doubts?” Another shake. “I love you, Sophie.”

She tilted his head up. “I can see it in your gaze, and I don't see the shadows right now. Sometimes they lurk and I can't help but want to scare them away for you.”

Curious, he asked, “What do you see right now?”

“There's just blue, your eyes.” She smiled. “The bluest of blue.”

“A Who reference?” he asked, breathless. “God, I'm going to marry you.”

She flushed and tried to look annoyed at his hamfisted proposal. “I'm going to have to teach you romance, and how to properly ask for things.”

He pulled her down to his mouth and kissed her softly. “What word is both big and small? Sad and complicated?”

  “Alive?”

He shook his head then kissed her longer. Finally, he gave her the answer. “Love. So be my wife. You'll take me where I need to go and I'll always be your thief.”

Sophie grinned and more tears came. “This time, I have don't have any intention of giving you back. You helped mend me.”

His throat was tight. He'd never dared to hope for it—to be loved. Not like this. “That's a yes?”

She leaned in and whispered in his ear, “Sweetie, that's a hell yes.”

He laughed at the pet name. It left him warm instead of annoyed. “God, I don't mind that.”

“Love,” she said and it was the perfect explanation.

He nodded in agreement, seeing her logic then whispered against her lips, “It makes you bigger on the inside.”

  BIO

Melissa Blue’s writing career started on a typewriter one month after her son was born. This would have been an idyllic situation for a writer if it had been 1985, not 2004. Eventually she upgraded to a computer. She’s still typing away on the same computer, making imaginary people fall in love.
