  DEDICATION

I want to give a special thank-you to my daughter, who sat endlessly helping me select names while I created this story. She may be young, but she is my biggest fan and I love her so much. Along with my three sons who ask daily, “Mommy, how’s your book going?” They help push me! Once again I thank my husband who has allowed me to follow my dream while he is working his butt off for us! I love you so much, baby!

And I can never forget my parents who have allowed me to change my mind so many times throughout my life. You showed me through your own sacrifices that if you want something bad enough you have to work for it. Well, Mom and Dad, here is book two, with more to come. I reached the stars!

  Chapter One

Since as long as she could remember, Piper had had nothing but bad luck. Just when things started to look up, they went downhill. Despite that she had two jobs, one as a manager of day spa and the other as her hidden passion as a romance author. Currently she was in the process of moving out of her apartment because it was the third time it had been broken into. This, of course, happened after she had fallen at work and sprained her ankle on the way out after she had been laid off at the spa due to the decline in the economy. Then her publisher called and said her last book was good, but it needed to have a more in-depth look, so she needed to make changes within a two-month time frame. She was stuck as to what to do next. Crap, she was having such a bad day, and to top off the pile of shit, someone had slashed her tires. She was at her breaking point and needed to get out of the city. After talking to her friend Sam, who lived up north, she decided it was time to pack her bags up and leave. Hoping to make a new start, to try and gain some sort of good luck, Piper headed off to Lucky, Montana.

Piper Andrews was a simple girl, who many people would never give the time of day. She started writing romance novels right out of college after receiving her bachelor’s in business management and marketing. Soon she found herself working at the spa up the street after she wanted to look nice for a date, which she was stood up at. Now here she was at the age of twenty-six, jobless, homeless, and alone. She was grateful she had Sam to fall to. She and Sam met when they both went away to camp one year during the sixth grade, and since then, they letter-passed and spent summers together until they both got accepted into the same college. Now Sam was in Lucky, and Piper, well, she was just plain unlucky.

Piper’s first published books were short. She did not want to jeopardize her actual work, so she printed under a pen name. Soon the fan base grew, and the demand for her creative talents of descripted sex scenes drew higher ratings. Yet she continued to write under her pen name. As the times changed, more people wanted a change from steamy cowboys on the ranch to a hardcore alpha male spanking his submissive into orgasm. Her first book of the series went to number one, but as the second came close, she found she was lacking material, or that was what her publisher thought as well. So here she was, off on her adventure to start a new life.

Piper knew that Sam was excited for her best friend to come and stay with her. Sam had promised her that it was for the best and knew that she’d had a hard time with her life in general. Sam told her that she had never met a person who had such bad luck. She joked with her that if she didn’t have bad luck, she would have no luck at all. Piper asked if she could just take door number two with no luck. She and Piper had gotten closer in the last couple of years and felt like they were more sisters than anything else. Piper grew up in foster care homes, and each year they sent kids to camps. That was where the two of them met. Piper was shy and stayed to herself with her nose in a book.

  The
day they met, some kids were picking on her, and one took her book and threw it into the water before pushing her down to the ground. Sam came up and hit the girl and helped her up, and since that moment, they had been inseparable. Sam was a twin to her brother Milo, who was in the military. She and Sam stayed close. Sam had also mentioned that she had soon become fast friends with Riley, a woman who had just moved into town, and she was excited that they all three would become friends.

Piper had always been there for Sam. When her parents passed away from a car accident while she and Sam were in college that was the first time she had met Milo. Piper had a secret crush on Milo, and not many people knew he was the first male character in her book that turned into an instant sensation. Milo, however, always saw Piper as a nerdy girl with glasses Sam helped at camp one year.

Getting to Lucky took forever, but soon enough her green piece of crap came driving up to Sam’s small two-bedroom house. Piper’s car was small, but she refused to sell it, as it was the first thing she had bought with her own money that actually belonged to her, and Sam respected that and didn’t force the issue. Sam had always had family to rely on before her parents’ death, and even after that she had her aunt and Milo. However, Sam was Piper’s family, and she would never trade that for anything.

Piper gritted her teeth as her car sputtered the last ten miles to Sam’s house, but it made it. She promised once she got a job and everything settled, she would fix her baby up right. She could see Sam standing outside looking like a freaking model, her golden-blonde hair pulled up in a ponytail blowing in the wind. Sam also had the perfect model body, about five eight, slim, long legs, and she had great boobs, too. Not that Piper spent much time looking at them, she wasn’t into that type of game, but shit, she hated to stand next to her when they went to parties. Yes, she wasn’t exactly fat, but she had curves and large breasts. Her flaming-red hair went on for days. She could never cut it short, as she would look like a damn poodle. One bad haircut and that is all it took to learn her lesson. She had to also wear damn glasses as well, because honestly she could not afford the time or money to get contacts. With her writing late at night anyway, her eyes got tired, and she didn’t want to mess around with contacts. Taking a deep breath, she pulled into the drive and got out of the car as Sam ran up to her and pulled into a big bear hug, bouncing up and down in excitement. Damn, that girl was strong, too.

“Piper, I’m sooo glad you’re here! Now we can work together, and things will get better. Trust me, you’ll see,” Sam stated as she helped Piper pull the last of the few items she had in her car. Piper thanked her and walked into the cute little house.

Piper had a thing for cute cabins, and Sam’s she just adored. It had a wraparound porch that had a two-person swing attached on the left side and a rocker on the right of the front door. Once inside the house, she walked into the cozy living room that housed a couch, recliner, and a coffee table. The stone fireplace brought life into the room and was so beautiful. Sam was a lot like her with keeping things to a minimum, but there were pictures placed here and there throughout the house. The kitchen was small and opened up to allow a tiny table to sit four people.

Sam helped her take her things up to her room, which was filled with a full-size bed, a dresser, and a nightstand. It was simple, but the walls were a rich cream color that offset the chocolate color of the bedspread. Accents of a rich wine color brought the room a rustic feel. It was more than she could have hoped for. After Piper thanked Sam for everything, she decided to take a shower before she took a nap. It had been a long drive, and truth be told, she just wanted to stop thinking about her next step and just be still for a while.

Not happy with choice that he now faced, Milo thanked his commanding officer before heading home in his old truck. This time home consisted of Lucky, Montana, and not the ever-busy Camp Pendleton in California he had known for the last two years. He just hoped that Sam would be okay with him coming back and not flip out at his injuries while in Iraq. His arm and leg had healed from its last assignment, but unfortunately his term was up, and he could not stomach going back without the rest of his unit. Since there were only three survivors, he didn’t want to get assigned to another unit. He did regret leaving behind Jessie Sinclair. She was an officer, a first lieutenant assigned to his unit as a public officer liaison. They had a brief affair, as having a relationship with an officer was considered against the rules. When his unit was attacked and hurt, he was sent home, but she remained over there. He’d wanted more, but she just didn’t. She had said she didn’t want to settle down, and wanted to make sure she was making to right choice. In not so many words, she told him she wanted to see other people. Fine with him. She made her choice, and now he was heading home to whatever life threw at him.

He got into his truck and made the three-day trip home to Montana. He and his sister, Sam, had grown up in Florida, but his sister needed a break and went up to Lucky with her aunt. Since then she had stayed. Milo hated to admit it that he’d found a home there. He developed friendships, and the letters and e-mails from them had helped get him through his tours in Iraq.

During the drive home, he had called Wes and Grady to let him know he was on his way home. He intended to stay with his sister until he moved into his own house. He was going to help Wes and Grady at their security company.

“So did you hear about Cash and Cooper? They both are getting married to Riley this weekend. Sam is going to be the maid of honor. I am still shakin’ my head at how those two got her. She’s a hot little number. Now they are expecting a baby as well. Things are sure changing around here. You should give them a call. We are in need a sheriff, and well, you have the experience,” said Wes.

“Thanks, man, I’m give them a call on my way. Just do me a favor and don’t tell Sam I am coming. I want to surprise her.” Then Milo hung up the phone and called Coop and Cash.

During the call he was amazed at Cash and Cooper’s turnaround. So much has happened, and now those two were getting married this weekend. He had a lot to catch up on, and he was looking forward to finally relaxing and not looking over his back for once. Lucky was going to be his new home. He said he would take the sheriff’s job, only because he also found out their soon-to-be bride was expecting their child. Coop didn’t want to spend all his time at the office. Cash told him about a house for sale, and Milo took him up on his offer. He knew what he wanted, and so did Cash. He would be moved into his own house within a week.

Piper came downstairs into the kitchen to find Sam sitting at her small table working on her computer. “Hey, whatcha doing?” she asked as she sat down next to Sam after getting a water out of fridge.

“I’m working on some inventory for the store. It is growing at a massive rate, and demands are high. I’m half tempted to hire some part-time help so I can have some sort of life as well.” She laughed. Piper had a way to help Sam out since she really had nowhere else to go. She offered her service until they both could figure out something. Sam agreed, and together they went to work on dinner and discuss what they could do for the store. Once the evening had hit, Piper, like normal, pulled out her laptop and started working on her revisions for the second book of her most recent series. She knew she didn’t have a lot of time to make it work, but unless she wanted to get dropped, she had to put in a lot of late nights.

“Okay, what has got you so engrossed in your work?” Sam asked as she set a glass of wine in front of Piper.

“Remember I told you about my book and what the publisher said. It seems the fans want more, and well, I guess I missed the mark again. I am trying to do some research into how to get into one of the clubs. I found one about an hour south of here called the Hidden Gem, but there’s like a two-week background check to get into the place. I don’t know what to do. It says you have to select if you are a Dominant or a submissive, how long you have been part of the lifestyle, do you belong to any other clubs, and so forth. The question
s are so personal. I don’t know. What do you think?” Piper was biting her lip, like she normally did when she was nervous or frustrated, or hell, all the damn time. It had developed from the many times she would stub a toe or hit her head and tried to stop herself from crying out in pain. She was on a first-name basis with pain, accidents, and everything else bad.

“Well, sign up, and we will see what we can find until then. I will see if I can find anyone who knows the owner and maybe get it moved up. Then you and I—yes, I said me, too—will go and do some field work. This is going to be so much fun. I also want to introduce you tomorrow to another friend of mine, who is actually getting married this weekend. Which reminds me, you’re my date to the wedding, so I hope you have a cute dress to wear. Anywho, Riley is so sweet. She reminds me of a fairy or something, she is so tiny. She is marrying Cooper and Cash Jackson,” spoke Sam as she bounced around the living room in excitement. Piper was used to this. When Sam was excited or happy about something, she could never sit down to save her life. It always made Piper smile. Sam would joke that since Piper was so mellow, she had to make up for her, too.

Piper agreed to going to the wedding because, after all, she wrote romance novels about stories like this with two hot cowboys. Research was always warranted in this case. So things were settling down, and Piper was too tired and frustrated to write anymore tonight, so she went off to bed as work awaited her in the morning.
