Lust in the Caribbean Page 26

by Noah Harris

But they found him a few minutes later, his skin emitting only the faintest phosphorescence. He floated near the surface, amid the wreckage and bodies of the Atlantic Lion. A great gash across the back of his head told Thomas he had not been able to swim away in time.

Thomas did not know before that moment that it was possible to cry underwater. Despite his eyes being in contact with the sea, he could feel them filling with tears. He cradled Radbert in his arms and swam away with him towards the Manhunter, the two mermen following.

Once they gained a short distance, the mermen stopped him. One smiled and took his hand. Thomas couldn’t look at him. He didn’t want to see anyone. He didn’t even want to be alive.

The merman put a hand on Thomas’s cheek and turned his head to face him. He looked from Thomas to Radbert and gently placed Thomas’s hand over the wound.

Understanding dawned. Of course! This merman had healed him. Could all mermen do that?

  But how?

Thomas looked at his lover, whom he had lost and so recently regained. He could not lose him again. Nothing mattered more to him than this plucky, kind youth who wanted love on his own terms.

  And then he felt it.

He felt something shift within him. He felt the energy of his body flow up from his chest and along his arm, trickling through each finger and onto that terrible gash in Radbert’s skull.

He felt the wound tingle, and then close.

  Thomas slumped back, exhausted.

Radbert opened his eyes and smiled. He took Thomas by the hand and, together, they slowly made their way back to the Manhunter. Thomas did not know how he had done what he had just done, but he knew that he and Radbert had a special place in the world now. They were mermen, and healers, and the Kingdom of Free Caribe would not refuse such a useful pair of new citizens.

They had a place now. They had each other, and they had a country. And Thomas knew, as they surfaced and spotted the Manhunter—battered yet afloat, her crew cheering from its deck—that more than one man-lover on that unique pirate ship would follow them to their new home.
