Road Refugees (A Motorcycle Club Romance) Page 20

He nuzzled his face in my neck. “Yes,” he agreed. “The only one.”

I put my face against his hot neck and went mindless with bliss. I didn’t have to always orgasm—it was our mutual pleasure that mattered. I pictured Town months ago, busting into that Flagstaff bar with a gun and shooing me away. At stake was his choice and look what that choice turned into. Suffering, such as I had at the hands of Orson, was the consequence of Orson’s choice. It wasn’t until I decided it would be my own choice to shape my future that I walked out.

Our cuddling was short-lived. Slappy flung the bedroom door open, allowing Linus and Mickey entrance. Mickey politely paced up and down, finally settling by the bureau where, ironically, a photo of her was framed. But Linus, oh no. No politeness for him. He came sailing on to the bed like a giant toad, splaying himself right over Town’s torso.

“Slappy, god damnit!” Town yelled, not having a word to say to Linus. “What’s gotten into you?”

“Tracy, that’s what!” Slappy shouted. At least, unlike Wolf, he was polite enough to stalk around Town’s side of the bed and not be too terribly obvious about sneaking a look at my rack. “You never told me Tracy belonged to Tobiah! Ptui! I spit on Tobiah!”

Sticking my legs under the sheet, I said, “Tobiah helped us find Town with his gearhead ways.”

Town raised himself out of bed, and I noted that even Slappy seemed to gaze upon him with admiration. Stepping into his jeans, he said, “I was trying to, buddy. You were under the delusion that Tobiah was just reinstalling her hard drive.”

Slappy spat again. “I’ll give you reinstalling her hard drive.’ What’m I going to do now? I could easily steal her from that Krelboyne.”

I said, “Then you’d have to contend with Wolf Glaser. He’s the other person in the ménage.”

“Wolf Glaser?” yelled Slappy. “What kind of taste does Tracy have in men? Whoa!”

Slappy had reached the bedroom window in a few strides just as a clamor rose from the party below. This was too much for me, and I got up, too, gripping the sheet to my boobs.

Some glamorous Hispanic fellow was standing in a circle of Boners, his hands in the air. He had that perfect wavy, thick, salt and pepper hair of the movie star, and his white button-down shirt revealed a few sprays of chest hair. Even from my distance, I could see he wore a Rolex, a favorite of Cornucopian men. To give a hint of corniness, his belt was white. He even wore what could be considered “slacks.” And his pointy shoes were white.

“Who the fuck?” we all asked at the same time. “Who’s the disco king?” Slappy added.

Town suddenly shouted, “I’ll bet I know! How much you want to bet that’s Santiago Slayer?”

Slappy yelled, “The guy who hitched a ride on the train?”

“Among other things,” said Town, racing to the bedroom door. Unlike Slappy, though, he didn’t continue down the hallway. He raced back to me, saying, “Come on, Heaven! I guarantee, you don’t want to miss this guy.”

“I’m coming, I’m coming!” I cried, getting my skirt tangled in my leggings.

By the time I got outside, the alleged Santiago Slayer was regaling his friends with the ending of the story—in a very thick, dramatic Latino accent. Everyone was roaring with laughter, even the old ladies and children, who were allowed near this sicario.

I only heard Tuzigoot, my future boss at Illuminati Construction, say, “How the hell did you get a Southwest Airlines pilot uniform?”

Wow, what had I missed? Grabbing Town’s shoulder, I bounced up and down on my tiptoes to hear the hitman’s story.

Slayer sliced the air with his hands. “Easy peasy, my friend. A while back, I forged a pilot’s license so I could fly free to Montreal to visit a woman.”

Roman shouted, “What did you do when they asked you to fly the plane?”

Slayer belittled the task. “A can of corn, as they say in Monaco. I just put it on autopilot.”

Everyone roared with laughter, apparently unconcerned that Slayer had control of hundreds of lives when he did that. But I had to admit, his carefree personality and blindingly white teeth made me like him.

Fox piped up. “Slayer! You want to parlay your pilot experience into a free flight to Cuba?”

Slayer stood erect. “Cuba? What is there?”

Fox deferred to Ford to explain. “Ah, he got stuck inside a shipping container and is complaining it’s a hundred and fifteen degrees inside. Last we heard, his next step was to call the police to let him out.”

Tracy chimed in. “It’s the hottest day ever in Havana!”

Tobiah lifted a finger from where he sat before a laptop at a picnic table. “I’m on it. I’m finding some steelworkers who can head on down without alerting the cops. Tracy, keep texting him encouragement.”

Slayer clenched a fist on high. “I’m your man! Fox, you do not need to attend. Wolf Glaser is my friend!”

“Can I drive you to the airport?” asked Fox.

“No need!” Slayer pivoted from foot to foot, slapping his pockets as if looking for keys. “I will take my Hyundai Sonata! But first . . . where is the men’s room?”

The crowd broke up when Fox led Slayer into our house. I tried to talk to my man, but Ford Illuminati was already back in Prez mode.

“Hey you! If you want to earn your third patch, go bring another batch of those ginger cookies!” He turned to me and smiled. “They’re fucking excellent.”

I preened while Town dutifully went off to get my cookies. Mickey Finn rubbed against my leg. Nowadays, she always came when called, and had learned what toys were—to play with! She was in love with a neighbor’s lab and pulled us there when we walked that way. She was in a weekly puppy play group out at Tanner’s Hang Town Ranch, along with other member’s dogs. Mickey snuggled wherever it struck her—the couch, our bed, the fruiting chamber, even the pool table.

She was teaching me to relax, to trust in my environment. We chose the path of no pain and suffering, because we deserved it. Our new reality, our beautiful cabin and lake and friends, this was all the creation of our own choice.

  We chose happiness.
