Dorthy's Disasters: A Ryders Legacy Historical Book (The Alphabet Mail-Order Brides 4) Page 9

by George H. McVey

Now in just a few minutes when her husband arrived home she would let him know that she loved him more today than she had even last week. Every day she loved him more. She couldn’t imagine not being Mrs. Samuel Ryder.

Her school was opening first of the week. She had a family now of her own and friends whom she loved. Everything she’d ever prayed for and never thought she’d get had been given to her. Everything Sam had told her he’d prayed for as well had been given them. Well everything but one.

Her musing was interrupted by the sound of familiar boots on the porch. The connection with her husband burst as he opened the door. She was in his arms before the door was even closed. “I missed you, love.”

He pulled her close and captured her lips with his, pouring all his love and passion into the kiss that went on and on until her knees went weak and stars danced in her eyes from lack of breathing. He finally let her lips go and she laid her head on his chest, listening to their hearts racing to the same rhythm. “I missed you too, Sam. Now come eat before your supper gets cold.”

“I’m not hungry. You promised me a surprise, where’s my surprise?”

She laughed. “You are hungry. I can feel your hunger, Sam. Food first, surprise after. Come on, I cooked all your favorites; you don’t want me to have done all that work and you spoil it by letting the food get cold, do you.”

Sam sighed and followed her to the table. “What are you keeping from me, Dorthy Ryder? Are you okay? Someone said they saw you at Doc’s clinic today. Are you sick?”

“I’m fine, Sam. Stop worrying and eat.”

She watched as the love of her life filled his plate. They talked about the crops and the field rotations and how it was going. Nathan had implemented them over at the Dueling N’s ranch as well and they were both set to not need to buy any winter feed this year. They talked about how Hanna was doing with bunking with the other teachers instead of in the hacienda and both had to agree she was growing by being out from under her parents’ roof. When asked, Dorthy admitted she was excited for the start of school next week. When Sam sat his napkin in the center of his plate, Dorthy knew she’d held out as long as he would let her. “Sam, I don’t want to upset you but I’m going to need to hire one more teacher right away.”

He frowned and she could feel his confusion at this line of conversation when he’d expected her to give him her surprise. “Why do you need to hire another teacher, Dorthy? You told me that six would be enough. Have you had more students enroll?”

“No, our enrollment is full. I just don’t think I’m going to be able to handle a full teaching schedule this year.”

“Why not? I thought you were looking forward to teaching again.”

“I am, but I think I’m going to be a bit busy in a few months taking care of your baby.”

Sam stopped and stared at her. “What are you telling me, Dorthy? Are you with child?”

She smiled and nodded. “Yes Samuel, that’s why I went to see Doctor Sonoman today. He confirmed I am going to have a baby in about six months. Our baby. We’re having a baby, Sam, our own little family.”

Dorthy squealed as her big, tough husband scooped her into his arms and twirled her around. “Dorthy, that’s your secret? That’s what you’ve been keeping from me? A baby?”

“Yes, my darling. Are you happy?”

“Am I happy? I’m beyond happy, I’m ecstatic. Hire two teachers. I don’t want you to have to do anything. Hire two teachers, a cook and a housekeeper. Let’s get you to bed, you need to be safe and rest. I don’t want anything to happen to you and our baby.”

She giggled. “Stop it, Sam. Your mother warned me you’d try this. She said Nathan did the same thing, so did Rowdy. I’m not going to lay around and do nothing and I’m not going to break. Women have been having babies since time began, you know. Besides, I have your mom and Grace to help me.”

“Are you sure? I want you safe. No disasters at all, so be careful love.”

She kissed him. “I’ll be careful. No more disasters. Just sons or daughters.”

He kissed her so sweetly and carried her to their bed where they celebrated their new family until late in the night. As she lay watching him sleep she couldn’t help thinking how so much blessing came from what had to have been the worst of Dorthy’s Disasters.

  The End.

  About the Author

George McVey always wanted to be a superhero; sadly, no radioactive storms or animals have been a part of his life. One day while spinning a tall tale for his family, some suggested once again that with all his experiences in ministry, and his imagination, he should be writing books. This time it was like lightning struck him and he decided, why not.

Since then, George has been hard at work using his creative imagination and writing several books. He's still adding to his bibliography to this day. You can find them all on his Amazon.com page. George lives in the wonderful state of Almost Heaven, West Virginia. In a lovely basement apartment with his wife of 31 years, Sheri, and a service dog named Daisy Mae.

If you ever come to visit him, you will probably find him sitting in his recliner or at his desk in the office working on some writing project. If he isn't working on a novel, then he will be working on a short story or blog post. If he isn't doing either of those then he is either asleep or eating, his other two favorite past times.
