“Open your eyes David.” Michael said quietly.
Opening his eyes slowly, David was surprised to see a white sphere of energy surrounding him. He'd created a force field around himself.
The sphere pulsed outward from David approximately four feet and was still growing. As David played with the field, he found he could push it even farther from himself. Allowing the field to grow, he saw white, wispy tendrils feel their way through the air, probing for new spaces to fill.
“Great!!” Michael exclaimed, clapping his huge hands. “Good job man!”
David released his concentration, the white field disappearing instantly, and was surprised to feel fatigued.
“Don't worry,” Michael said as he sensed David's concern, “you will get stronger with practice and it won't wear you out as much.”
“So this is how I heal the lost souls?” David asked as he climbed up onto the enormous couch sitting next to Michael. David felt dwarfed beside Michael, as though the large angel could decide at any moment to grab David and use him as a ventriloquism puppet.
Michael smirked as though he’d read David's thoughts, and then answered. “Yes, the field that you create will surround the lost souls and raise their frequency so it's closer to yours. That way, you'll be able to communicate with them and hopefully convince them to go to the light.” Michael explained. “Sometimes, all it will take is healing them and they’ll remember on their own.”
As David recuperated, Michael continued. “The next lesson is learning your weapon. It comes from the same source, it's just projected differently. Use the same memory of love but instead of describing love to the alien being, describe the meaning of the word 'protect'. Make sense?”
“Rest for a bit though Dave.” Michael said as he stood up. “We have a lot of ground to cover. You've learned to heal spirits, you need to learn your weapon against the dark energies and...there's your field trip to get ready for.” The large angel said with a mischievous wink.
“Field trip?” David repeated, curious.
Shadows
As Lily followed Gabe out of the tree house, she was surprised to see the outside world. The environment outside was heavenly compared to the starvation of stimuli she’d been subjected to.
Even though the world was still painted with a dull shade of gray, the various patterns gave Lily a sensation she hadn't felt since before she died—hope.
The contrast between the sky and the trees, the ground and the tall grass, not to mention the movement of the breeze gently pushing the world around, was exhilarating. For Lily, it was Eden compared to the still and stark existence she'd been trapped in for so long.
She happily followed Gabe out of the woods and up the meandering path toward her parents’ home. It thrilled her that she recalled so much now. She was amazed that simply being around him could revive so much within her.
Only a few feet from the house, Lily heard a strange noise come from behind her, a deep growling sound. Turning around slowly, but still keeping pace with Gabe, she saw a shadow slithering up behind them like a shark stalking its prey.
Its eyes glared with hatred as it hissed at Lily. “Where do you think you are going?”
Instinctively, Lily knew this creature had something to do with her captivity. She tried to run but her energy level was still depleted.
“Gabe! Help me, please!” Lily cried out as she desperately tried to summon the strength to run faster.
Though Gabe paused and looked back as though he’d heard something, he continued up the path towards the house.
Lily pushed herself to run harder, but it was so difficult. Her body felt submerged in molasses. Fighting against the resistance, she made it to the front step before the shadow reached her.
As Lily forced herself up the steps of her parent's house, she yelped when she suddenly felt extreme pressure on her foot. The shadow creature had grabbed hold of her and wrapped itself around her ankle. An odd feeling, like ice invading her veins, crept up her leg as she struggled to free herself.
She screamed and kicked, trying to rid herself of the shadowy leech attached to her. Looking at her leg, she was horrified to see everything below her knee turning black.
“Get off of me!!!” Lily screamed at the creature. Turning her face to the sky, tears streaming down her face, she called out for help. Help from above, from an angel and from God.
“Please...” she sobbed, “please help me!”
Immediately, two great orbs of light soared down from above the trees. Descending upon the shadow beast, the lights swarmed the creature. Shrieking angrily, the shadow snake recoiled, released Lily's leg and slithered off into the woods.
Dazed, Lily dragged herself into the house. Looking back at the open door, she saw the two orbs of light shimmer into the shape of two men. They were so beautiful to Lily, who had not seen anything but the lifeless, gray world for so long. Their skin, like iridescent porcelain, glowed from the inside out. Their souls shone brightly from behind ocean blue eyes.
She smiled weakly at them and nodded a heartfelt thank you. She then tried to stand up and discovered that she could not move her leg. Lily looked at her calf and foot, surprised to see they were charcoal black. What little energy Lily had left began to seep slowly out of her ghostly body, she struggled to remain conscious.
Outside, the young men still stood there, looking as though they wanted to speak with her. She heard voices in her head and tried to focus on their words. They seemed to be trying to speak with her telepathically, but she felt too weak. Closing her eyes, she lay her head down on the floor and rested. Eventually the world faded into a senseless blur.
Synthesis
“Why exactly do I need a weapon? I mean, can the dark energies hurt me?” David asked Michael as he prepared himself for another round of energy manifestation.
Sighing deeply, the large angel appeared to be deciphering the best way to deal with this topic. “Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, correct?” Michael stated logically and David nodded. “Energy can be altered though. Whether it is amplified or compressed, it can change states of being.” Michael stood up and waved his hands in the air, creating a holographic depiction of energy frequencies. Colored spheres of light danced in the air in front of David.
Some of the spheres shone bright, like condensed balls of energy. They made David think of stars, at least what they might look like up close.
Some of the energy formations Michael had produced looked dark and heavy, like storm clouds on Earth, pregnant with precipitation.
“If you were to blend two different paint colors together, what happens?” Michael asked of David.
“Well, usually they form another color.” David answered.
“Yes, red and yellow makes orange. Blue and red makes purple. Right?” Waving his hands again, orbs of bright colors danced in mid-air.
The red and yellow orbs slowly came toward one another, and then merged together. At first, the two colors swirled separately, like a red and yellow lollipop. Then the two fused together, creating a bright orange sphere.
Next, the blue and red orbs gravitated towards one another and effortlessly combined to form purple.
Smiling at the graphic representation, David nodded in understanding.
“Now, the color black.” Michael said, as he manifested a new three dimensional hologram in the air. A large jet black orb hung in the air while all the colors of the rainbow appeared in a circle around the black sphere. Watching them, David thought the whole ensemble looked like a new version of the solar system.
The red orb moved first toward the dark sphere, the fiery shade spiraled into the pitch, and then was completely devoured by blackness. Next, the yellow orb edged into the black abyss, only to meet the same fate. Again and again, the colors were consumed by the dark, leaving no trace of their previous existence.
When all the colored orbs were gone, the large black sphere hung alone in the air. Looking directly at it, its presence was ominous. It resem
bled a gaping black hole, ready to consume anything that dare enter its territory.
With another wave of his hand, Michael produced a pulsating white orb next to the black predator. The intensity of the white light was nothing less than spectacular. On Earth, it might have hurt David's eyes to stare into the center of this splendor.
David had sudden anxiety when he thought of the fate of the beautiful ball of light.
Moving toward one another, the perimeters of the white sphere and black sphere merged. Fusing, the two colors churned together, forming a single, new sphere. David waited for the swirling shades of dark and light to fade to black, but surprisingly, the color settled to a muddy gray shade.
Michael explained with a bittersweet smile upon his handsome face. “You see, dark energy and light energy are complete opposites. Their strengths are the same whereas the rainbows of colors in between, or frequencies, are weaker.” Michael paused for a moment, getting a sense of whether David understood. After a moment, he continued. “So, even though the dark energies can't destroy you, they can alter you. Light energy is a high vibration, while dark energy is a low vibration.”
'Is that why you can't touch me or communicate telepathically with me?' David wondered.
“Exactly, my frequency is much higher than your own. Even though it is a positive energy, if I were to touch you, I could harm you by forcing your molecules to begin vibrating too fast, too soon. Likewise, if the dark energies touch you, your frequency could slow too quickly and...Well, it's not a pretty topic.”
'I see.' David said, feeling a little uncertain about his future.
“But no worries Dave, once we figure out your weapon, all will make sense.”
“So, this 'weapon' will protect me from the dark energies?” David enquired.
“Yes, depending on the strength of your weapon, you may be able to send the creatures running for cover or it may just stun them and give you enough time to get away.”
“What is the weapon exactly?” David wondered.
“It depends, everyone's is different. It's like a gift each soul is given and until you open it, you don't know what it is.” Michael explained.
“What's yours?” David's blue eyes brightened as he asked Michael with building interest.
Laughing heartily at David's new-found excitement, Michael stood to give him a demonstration.
“Stand back.” Michael instructed David with a mischievous grin.
Michael closed his eyes and concentrated for a moment. David watched intently as Michael's entire body illuminated a silver glow from within. As the internal aura grew, Michael's body radiated with white energy. Even his tattoos burned sylvan, like magnesium strips lit a fire. As the energy surged around him, his wings spread out forcefully. The pulse roared around Michael, faster and faster, until it released an enormous explosion of silver fire. Michael, now engulfed in flames, shone with a metallic hue. His once black hair, now pure silver, blew straight up from the force of the fiery hurricane.
The inferno roared around Michael in a perfect circle, while tendrils of fire speared like a snake's tongue at items in the room, disintegrating them on contact.
As the heavenly fire roared down to an ember, David grinned with sheer admiration.
“That was amazing!!” David said as the angel returned to normal.
“Thanks.” Michael answered sheepishly, combing his fingers through his tangled hair. “You try.” the angel added, grinning.
“Protect...protect...” David considered the act as he closed his eyes. He had drawn strength for healing from the love he felt for his daughter. At a loss, he tried to think of a time when he wanted to protect someone.
As he scanned through his memories like flipping through the pages of a book, he paused on the memory of his mother's face, just before she died. He remembered that while she was sick, all he'd ever wanted was to take away the pain, to protect her from the suffering.
David focused all the energy from the core of his soul onto the image of his mother's pained expression. Rippling waves of energy began coursing through David's ethereal body. It was a much different experience than the healing energy; it had been smooth and soft, whereas this was powerful.
As he harnessed the energy pulsating within him, he felt it reaching a peak. When the force reached a climax, David opened his eyes and released the full force of the crescendo.
Raising his hands, an enormous silver wave formed around David's torso. Releasing the energy, the sylvan wave suddenly plunged forward, crashing into Michael's desk across the room.
“Cool!” Michael exclaimed, clapping excitedly while the tides of energy flooded back towards David.
“Wow!” David grinned happily as he examined his hands, mystified that he'd actually created that.
“Good job! I would say you're ready for the field trip now.” Michael said with an edge of mystery in his voice.
Linger
Slowly the world came into focus. Shades of grays separated themselves once again, allowing Lily to see clearly.
Weak, she slowly picked herself up off the floor. After a moment, she recalled the attack. Looking quickly at her leg, she was happy to see it had almost healed. Instead of pure black, it was now a mottled collage of black and gray.
Surveying her surroundings, she recognized her parents' living room. Everything was the same as she remembered. Her father's ratty old smoking chair with its armrests nearly worn to the wood and the faded, flowery area rug that her mother made her father drag all the way from Ireland. An oil painting Sheridan made for their parents twentieth wedding anniversary hung upon the wall.
Wandering through the quiet house, Lily wondered where everyone was. There should've been all kinds of hustle and bustle going on. Like Quinn searching for her hairbrush, her long hair sticking out all over or Sheridan, playing the piano in the den. Or her father, snoring loudly in front of the television while her mother cooked supper in the kitchen.
Where is everyone? Lily thought sadly. Wait! Maybe it's nighttime, they're all in bed!
Lily was so excited to get upstairs. Finally, she could see her family again. Even though they couldn't see her, at least she could be near them. Moving as fast as she could, she ascended the stairwell.
Entering into the first room, she could see her mother and father sleeping peacefully in their bed. Carefully, she tip-toed across the floor, knowing there were many creaks and squeaks in the old floorboards. It took her a few steps before she remembered that she didn't have to worry about making noise anymore.
Duh Lily, She thought, you're a ghost!
Lily walked to her mother's side of the bed and gently sat beside her. Inspecting every line and contour on her mother's face, Lily felt her heart warm. It had been so long since she'd seen her face. As Lily studied her face, her mother suddenly stirred as though dreaming.
Visiting her father's side of the bed, she giggled as she watched him snore with his mouth wide open. Kissing him lightly on the forehead, she then moved on to visit Sheridan.
Moving down the hall, Lily stopped in front of Sheridan's bedroom door. It was closed. So far, Lily hadn't had to worry about trying to open any doors. When she was stuck in the tree house, she'd just followed Gabe out of the trap door.
When she first entered the house, Gabe had left the front door open. This closed door presented a challenge for Lily, but being stubborn, she wasn't about to give up.
She chose to see if she could just walk through the door. It appeared to be the most logical approach, considering she was a ghost. Raising her translucent hand to the door, she pressed lightly, testing the solidity. Expecting the laws of physics to apply, Lily was surprised there was no resistance whatsoever. It was as though the door didn't even exist.
Passing through the door, she looked over at Sheridan's bed, eager to see her little sister. Sheridan was fast asleep, snoring lightly. Lily sat on the edge of the bed and admired her sister's beautiful features. Her hair cut short, Sheridan looked fashionable and ma
ture. Lily felt sad she'd missed the last few years of her sister's life. Touching her cheek with the back of her transparent hand, Lily whispered to her little sister, “I love you.”
Stirring lightly in her slumber, Sheridan mumbled in return, “I love you too, Lily.”
Shocked, Lily stood up and backed away. Disbelief coursed through her as she let the magnitude of the moment settle in.
“She can hear me!” Lily thought with awe. “I wonder if everyone can hear me when they are sleeping.”
Excited, Lily left Sheridan's room and walked down the hall to Quinn's room. The door was wide open, not that closed doors presented a problem for Lily anymore. Entering into her little sister's room, she was saddened to see Quinn was not in her bed.
I wonder where on earth that girl could be at this hour! She thought, puzzled. Not that Lily had any idea what time it was, but it had to be late.
Disappointed, she left Quinn's room. As she walked out, she came face to face with her old room. The door was closed but Lily noticed a dim light shining from the crack underneath. Curious, she passed through her door.
Looking around the room, she was pleased to see it had been left virtually untouched since the last time she'd seen it. The only difference she could see was a soft nightlight was glowing within the room.
Looking at her bed, she was shocked to see there was someone sleeping there! She was suddenly reminded of the story of Goldilocks and the three bears. “Someone is sleeping in my bed.” She thought to herself with a giggle.
Nearing the edge of the bed, she peeked at the mystery guest. All huddled up in the blankets and facing away from her, it was difficult to see. Leaning way over, Lily gasped as she recognized the face.
