The Santorini Bride Page 19

by Anne McAllister

“I will marry you,” Martha promised. “You are my love, my joy, my heart.”

Edward Martin Savas was born four weeks later.

“Ed and Ted,” Theo said cheerfully. He’d come back to the hospital late that evening, arms full of packages, snowflakes from a late-spring storm glinting off his hair. “They’ll be inseparable.”

“You want to name him after the dog?” Martha started laughing.

Theo shrugged, grinning. “At least Ted doesn’t deface public property. Well, not often.” He bent down and kissed his wife with a thoroughness that left her breathless. “I don’t care. What do you think?”

“I love it.” She loved him. And Ted. And Ed. “Take your jacket off. Stay a while.”

“In a minute. Look what I’ve brought.”

The cardigans had knitted the baby half a dozen sweaters and made him a personalized baby quilt. Dustin and Jeremy and Clare sent pictures of the mural of nursery rhymes they intended to paint over his crib. Spence had sent the deed to twenty acres of prime land up in Elk Park as a head start to his real estate portfolio. Ted, courtesy of Theo, had provided a box of dog biscuits. And, of course, there would be gifts and hugs and love from all his Savas and Antonides relatives.

“He’s blessed,” Martha said, snuggling the baby in her arms, looking down with love on this child whose existence had given her back the man she loved more than anyone on earth.

“He’s blessed us,” Theo said, because he knew it, too. Without his son he might never have had Martha—and the chance to love again. He reached out a finger and ran it lightly over his son’s cheek.

“Just one big happy family,” Martha said, and drew Theo down onto the bed beside her.

“That’s us,” Theo whispered. “Right, buddy?”

The baby pursed his lips and sighed softly. And from inside Theo’s jacket a purring murmuring not-quite-bark agreed.
