An outline of a black horse strolled out of the darkness, its fur shimmering in the glow of the lamps, almost looking like it had a glittery tinge. The horse’s hair was darker than the night sky. I didn’t know how that was even possible; it was as if someone had painted the horse’s fur with every imaginable color. Every time I looked at it, a different color popped out, but it still managed to remain as black as ever.
On the very top of the horse’s head was shimmering silver horn, at least two feet long, and it twisted onto itself.
“Sunny…meet Mary.” Oisin bowed his head towards the horse. “Mary, this is Sunny. She’s the sun-wolf I told you about.”
“She’s a…” The word wouldn’t spill from my lips. Of all the things I’d seen these past couple of weeks, how could I be so surprised?
“Unicorn,” Oisin whispered. “Mary says make yourself comfortable and for me to show you to your room.”
I nodded and took one last glance at the unicorn. “Thank you for letting me stay here.”
Mary let out a whimsical neigh and whipped her head towards the house. I followed Oisin through the yellow door. Once we passed the threshold, it felt different. The air was warm and inviting, like a cozy blanket on a cold winter’s night.
I gulped. “Did you feel that?”
“Aye. That’s a protection spell. No harm will fall upon you while you’re here. Mary’s doing.”
“She can do magic, and she’s a unicorn. How unfair is that? All I do is get a little hairy and eat cute bunnies.”
Oisin chuckled. “Life isn’t always fair, Kiddo. You just have to grow up and move on.”
The End (for now!)
