The Unraveling (Wonderland Book 2) Page 16

by Rebekah Lewis

The top envelope had a red wax seal. A crest containing what looked like a gryphon and also a smiling cat was embossed within the wax. Felicity took the letters and sat down again, using her finger to break the seal on the first one. The letter was scrawled in Cadence's hand. Tear drops landed on the words, and she angled it away so she didn't wash the ink away.

  Dear Mom and Dad,

I miss you, and I will always love you no matter what. Matilda shouldn't be a threat since she is relying on your help. She has been banished from Wonderland for abusing her power as queen. She's trapped in a world she's never lived in and doesn't understand. You taught Melody and me to treat others as we wish to be treated, and even though she has committed crimes in Wonderland, she deserves a chance to atone for them.

I have married Gareth. Through a series of unpredictable events, we are now the queen and king of the Red Kingdom. Just imagine, all those years of pretending I was a princess led to this. Melody and Sunny are here too, but I'll let her tell you how she's doing.

  I love you,

  Cadence

Matilda shifted uncomfortably as Felicity wiped her tears and fidgeted as she broke the second seal—black wax with a top hat design—and found Melody's cursive handwriting.

  Dear Mom and Dad,

My coming here started out as an accident, but rest assured the decision to stay came from my heart. I've fallen in love and married Hatter. You may know him from the stories as the Mad Hatter, but he's not insane. He does get a little zany at times. I've noticed, however, it has happened less and less frequently with each day.

I've taken a job as the White Queen's advisor while Hatter still works as a craftsman. I start tomorrow, but I'm sure it will be wonderful. Sunny has adapted rather well. We are keeping her indoors for now, but she has taken a liking to Devrel, the Cheshire cat that brought Cadence here the first time. I'm not sure if Boojums and regular cats are compatible, but I suspect there may be more than one Boojum in Wonderland again if she has her way since I never got around to having her spayed. Devrel wears his best waistcoat when he visits now. What a gentleman, wooing my cat.

Who am I kidding? It's weird as hell.

I love you both, and I wish I'd been able to tell you so before I left. Miss you much!

  Melody

Overwhelmed, Felicity sniffled. "Can you be a dear and go into the bathroom at the end of the hall and bring back the box of tissues on the counter?"

Matilda looked like she was about to question what tissues were, but she wandered off to retrieve them anyway.

Felicity wiped at her eyes and glanced out the window facing the forest behind the house where her daughters went missing. A large, gray cat sat on the wrap-around porch, watching her. She could have sworn it grinned before it vanished.
