Finally Home Page 20

Her eyes were heavy as she looked over at them, and she raised her thumb in the air as the doctor continued cleaning her up. Jesse was done looking at all that blood, the miracle of birth was something else.

“Mayson and Jayson,” Jesse whispered. The boys were named after Jesse and Maya. He couldn’t explain the emotion he was feeling as he gazed at his sons and then his wife. He grinned harder thinking of Bella. Before they left to the hospital, Bella told him. “Take care of Mommy, and come home soon,” and she showered him with kisses. His little girl had him wrapped around her pinky finger. Anything she wanted he would give her, but Maya always stopped it. She was the strict one in the house.

“Here you go,” the nurse handed him the first baby. “I’m going to take them to the nursery soon.” The doctor had already told them what was going to happen once the babies were born.

“Yes, but they are breathing on their own.” The doctor pulled off her gloves and walked over. “Your babies will be back in no time.”

The nurse walked over to Maya, and Jesse followed right behind with Mayson securely in his arms. He was so tiny, it was like holding crystals. The nurse handed Jayson to Maya. Her face lit up when she finally got to see her boys. Her eyes widened as she looked from Mayson in his arms, to Jayson, and then she started crying. “They look like…” she couldn’t finish her words.

“Yes they do,” tears rolled down his face too.

Maya scooted up on the bed, and extended her arm. Jesse gently placed Mayson in her arms. She gazed at their sons, “They’re perfect.”

He took pictures of Maya and the babies, and started texting them to family and friends. Jesse pulled up his video chat, and his sister’s smile saluted him. “Sarah.”

“My nephews are the cutest baby boys that I’ve ever seen,” his sister beamed. “You know I’m going to spoil them, right?”

“Yes I know you will,” Jesse gawked at his sons. They looked so peaceful sleeping in Maya’s arms. So many memories of their life together flashed, and he realized that his past sorrows had not been in vein. God had been preparing him for more to come. He had to hit rock bottom to appreciate everything he was blessed with. His disability didn’t end his life, he almost did. He made so many mistakes in his life, but now he was righting his wrongs.

  “Is Bella still awake?”

“What do you think?” She turned the camera view around. “Missy didn’t want to go to sleep until she heard from you.”

“Daddy!” She grabbed the phone from Sarah. “Is Mommy okay?”

“Yes,” he chuckled, staring at his little girl. She’d grown so much; she was four going on fifteen. Time flied by so fast. “You have two brothers.”

“I know,” she sang. “I have two baby brothers!” Bella squealed. “When are you and Mommy coming home?”

“I’ll be home tomorrow,” he caressed Maya’s cheek, he could tell she was tired. Her eyes were hooded, “but Mommy and the boys have to stay here a little longer.”

  “Why?” Bella pouted her lips.

Gone was the Bella that always said hi, now everything was why.

She didn’t wait for him to answer. “I want to see my brothers.”

Jesse turned the phone in Maya’s direction. “Here they are.”

  “Mommy,” Bella’s voice softened.

“Yes, sweetie,” she looked up at the screen.

“I love you,” she blew a kiss.

“Meet Mayson,” Maya moved her arm so their little girl could she better, and “Jayson.”

“Oh my,” Sarah said from behind Bella. “I can’t wait to shower them with kisses. Two boys,” she chuckled. “Let’s hope they’re not like Jesse, or else you’ll need more therapy.”

Maya softly chuckled. “Thank God I’m already seeing one.”

The nurse came over, and gently took the boys from Maya, and placed them in the incubator.

“Bella, I love you,” Jesse watched the nurse. “Stop giving your aunty a hard time and go to sleep.”

“Yes, Daddy,” she gave Sarah the phone, and walked away, and then rapidly returned. “I love you, Daddy. Goodnight.”

  “Goodnight, bubbles. Thank you, Sarah.”

  “Anytime bro, bye.”

He swiped the phone off, and touched his sons’ noses.

“Rest, Mama,” the nurse said while checking Maya’s IV. “You two did great delivering your baby,” she started wheeling them out. “I will bring them back soon,” she said before closing the door.

“Okay,” Maya’s eyes started to flutter, and before he knew it she was asleep.

“You have been the biggest blessing in my life,” Jesse whispered, pulled down the rail to her bed, and snuggled in next to her. “Girl, I love you more than I ever thought I could love anyone. With you I will always be home, no matter where we are. Thank you for choosing me, loving me, and for being the beat of my heart.”

Maya lifted her head, and laid her head on his chest. “You made it right, Harvey,” she whispered. “You made sure all of my dreams came true. I love you.”
