When evening came, Katie sat at her sister’s dining room table and ate dinner. She didn’t understand how Tom could eat pumpkin at almost every meal, but he seemed to enjoy the pumpkin penne with pumpkin spinach sauce as much as she did. The pasta was made from whole wheat, of course, because of Sissy’s diabetes. Dinner was followed by left over pumpkin bread covered in sugar free vanilla ice cream.
“That was great. I should really get going though,” Katie said after she finished her second pumpkin cider coffee of the evening.
“Don’t forget about the Halloween party tomorrow night,” Sissy reminded her.
“I won’t.”
“It is the night when the dead can walk the earth.”
“Yeah,” Katie said sadly. “Maybe we’ll see mom.”
Sissy smiled and disappeared back into the kitchen. Katie got her bag and headed towards the front door. She pulled the heavy door open and walked outside. Sissy caught up with her on the lawn and handed her a warm bag.
“Food?” Katie asked.
“Of course,” Sissy said. “You never eat.”
“I’m too fat,” Katie whined.
“Oh,” said Sissy sweetly, patting Katie’s cheek, “I wish I was as fat as you.”
Katie rolled her eyes and got into her car.
