"But if what you said about the Dead Duke is true, and his motivation is to simply have an heir that's descended from both him and his late first wife, only the genetics matter on his wife's side. Not legitimacy."
Sid grabbed my arm. "She could challenge you on this, Hale. Think about it. She could get him to marry her before you do."
"Riggins doesn't want to marry anyone. I don't think I have anything to worry about—"
Sid handed me the tablet. "Don't you?"
I took it reluctantly and stared into the face of a drop-dead gorgeous woman with style, sophistication, and confidence jumping off the screen. It was so potent, I swore it swirled out of the tablet in a plume.
Her name was Rose. And her profile said she was closer to Riggins' age than I was. And British upper class, raised in an aristocratic household not so very far from Witham House. Crap.
I looked at my sister.
Sid held my gaze. "If she's legit, you have no power over Riggins now unless he marries you. Now that he has another choice, why would he help us find a cure for me? Or give you money not to marry him?
"What if more of these contenders pop up, Hale?" She paused. "If you want him, for whatever reason, you have to marry him. Now. Or lose it all."
