“What was he planning on doing with it?” Jolene asked.

Morgan shrugged as she licked ice cream off her spoon. “Money. Power. Same things Dr. Bly wants to use it for, I imagine.”

“So Peterson knew from the start that we had the scrap of paper that the killer had left in Nancy's hand,” Jolene mused aloud. “Because he was the killer. He found out he'd left a scrap behind, but it was gone when he got back there. We were the only ones on the scene, so we had to have it.”

“But it wasn't that obvious something had been in Nancy's hand. If he'd accused us outright, it might have tipped us off that he was the killer,” Morgan said.

“I never noticed he had the same energy trail as the killer because when I raised my awareness at Amity’s place, we knew the killer had already been there, so I couldn’t differentiate it from Peterson's. And I couldn’t even get a reading at Opal’s,” Jolene said. “I never tried to read him any other time, unfortunately.”

“So, you’re finally awake.” Cassiopeia’s voice drifted in from the doorway. She sauntered into the room, favoring Mateo with a wide smile.

Jolene could see the affection pass between them. They were as close as she was with her sisters. The sisters parted to make room for her.

Cassiopeia held up a familiar burlap bag as she took her place next to Jolene’s bed. “I believe this is yours.” She held the bag out to Fiona.

“Thank you! But how did you get it?” Fiona took the bag, peering eagerly inside.

Cassiopeia waved her hand. “As president of the witches’ guild, I have certain … opportunities. Anyway, it is yours by rights, so I don’t think Henry will complain if he finds it missing.”

Morgan looked at Cassiopeia sharply. “Oh, is he better?”

Cassiopeia shook her head. “No. Henry made a big mistake and I don’t think he’ll be ‘better’ any time soon. He certainly won’t be welcome at any guild meetings ever again.”

“Well, I sure can’t blame you there,” Celeste said.

“And I heard the police found evidence linking Peterson to the murders of Opal Mines and Nancy Baumann, so they aren’t surprised that he's disappeared,” Cassiopeia said.

Morgan frowned. “How do you know that?”

“Oh, I have my sources in the Salem P.D.” Cassiopeia turned to Mateo. “Turns out you were right. It’s a good thing we gave them the spell. Otherwise, I hear you may not be with us, dear brother.”

Jolene mulled that over. She did vaguely remember saying the words of the spell. But was that really what caused her to be able to save Mateo? And had Celeste’s chanting of the spell really caused the witch ghosts to attack Henry and the energy to incinerate Peterson … or had they both had that magical ability within them the whole time?

“That’s true.” Mateo tugged on Jolene’s hand, pulling her out of her thoughts. When she looked at him, he asked. “So, now do you believe in witches?”

“Well, I’m not exactly sure. I mean it seemed like the spell did make things more powerful, but I need more evidence.”

Cassiopeia rolled her eyes. “See, I told you she wouldn’t believe.”

Mateo patted Jolene's hand. “That’s okay. She will soon enough. And I owe her my life, so I’m making it my business to personally coach her until she believes.”

Personally coach her? Did that mean he was going to stick around? Jolene might be able to warm up to that idea, but she still couldn’t bring herself to admit it. She shrugged and said, “I don’t know what I believe.”

Mateo leaned back in his seat and took the container of ice cream that Celeste passed to him. “Fine by me. I’ve got plenty of time to prove it to you.”

Jolene settled back in her bed. In a few minutes, she’d insist on someone finding her clothes and start pestering the nurses to discharge her, but for now she wanted to revel in the success of another job well done.

The scrying ball was safe and no one close to her had been harmed. They’d even made new friends in Cassiopeia and Sarah, though Cassiopeia was kind of pushy about the spells. Yet, Jolene had to admit that it did appear as if the spell had helped them out, especially Celeste.

She still wasn’t sure if she believed in spells or witches. It might take someone a very long time to convince her of either. But with Mateo doing the convincing … well, what could be wrong with it taking a long time? Maybe even a long, long time.

A girl could wish, couldn't she?

  The end.

  A Note From The Author

I hope you enjoyed reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. This is the seventh book in the Blackmoore sisters mystery series and I have a whole bunch more planned!

The setting for this book series is based on one of my favorite places in the world - Ogunquit Maine. Of course, I changed some of the geography around to suit my story, and changed the name of the town to Noquitt but the basics are there. Anyone familiar with Ogunquit will recognize some of the landmarks I have in the book.

The house the sisters live in sits at the very end of Perkins Cove and I was always fascinated with it as a kid. Of course, back then it was a mysterious, creepy old house that was privately owned and I was dying to go in there. I’m sure it must have had an attic stuffed full of antiques just like in the book!

Today, it’s been all modernized and updated—I think you can even rent it out for a summer vacation. In the book the house looks different and it’s also set high up on a cliff (you’ll see why in a later book) where in real life it’s not. I’ve also made the house much older to suit my story.

Also, if you like this book, you might like my Mystic Notch series which is set in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and filled with magic and cats. You can find out more about this series on my website.

This book has been through many edits with several people and even some software programs, but since nothing is infallible (even the software programs) you might catch a spelling error or mistake and, if you do, I sure would appreciate it if you let me know - you can contact me at [email protected].
