Ray signaled for me to keep going, and I did. They got the vault up and on its side on the ground, and positioned it to drag toward the excavator.
“No. I’m not ready for this,” Edmund said, his voice stuttering and breaking, much clearer, even through the remaining walls of his coffin. All the little hairs on my arms stood up.
The vault came to a rest as I turned off the tow hitch. Frankie nodded to me. I turned off the excavator and hopped out. He said, “This is where we could really use you,” he said. “This is the hard part.”
