"Is that so?" he asked. A teasing grin curved one side of his mouth and his arms slid around her, pulling her down against him in the water.
"Oh, yeah. I never got to go to magic school or got pulled to another world by a nasty storm…so I'll take falling in love with a time traveler, instead," she assured him.
His eyes widened a fraction, grin dropping away. "Falling in love?" he asked hesitantly.
She flushed, cursing herself mentally as she tried to pull back. His arms tightened to hold her there as she looked away, not answering. "Are you falling in love with me, Katherine?" he asked again.
She sighed, feeling a rush of emotions. "Yeah. I-I guess I am, Jack. I know it's too soon. I know we barely know each other but…yes, I think so," she admitted.
With a growl, he rolled them both over in the pool, sending the water splashing over the side as he claimed her for a deep kiss that seemed to pull at her soul. Her hands clutched at his back, fingernails digging in as she returned the kiss with all the passion in her body. It wasn't the response she'd expected from her confession, but his body told her all she needed to know about how he felt.
They made love in the water, at the base of the waterfall. It was a gentle kind of pleasure, slow and full of exploration, but satisfying nonetheless. By the time they'd finished, the sun had moved along in the sky and their sheltered nook was now in shadows, so they climbed down to the larger pool of deep water and swam across to find the warmth. He pulled a couple of towels out of his bag and spread them out, and they basked in the sun, resting and warming themselves as they talked.
There were things that he wouldn't tell her—a lot of things—but he told her plenty about his family. It was almost like he was relieved to be able to share more with her. His sister, Emily, with whom he'd been extremely close growing up, featured often in his stories.
"She taught me everything," he explained. "Our grandfather taught her and traveled with her until she was old enough to control the gift a little, but he died before I was born. Once it became obvious I shared the same power, she took care of me. She slept with me at night, our wrists tied, so that if I traveled, she'd be pulled with me. It took a few years before I learned to travel only when I chose to," he explained.
"She must have been a lot older than you," Katherine commented. "Two little kids out in the world alone—that's scary stuff."
"She was somewhat older, yes," he said. There was a tone in his voice that said there was a sadness there, and she looked over to see a shadow of melancholy on his face. She didn't want to draw out memories that were obviously painful and ruin the afternoon. It was hard because there was so much she wanted—needed—to know, but it could wait.
As always, he was well-prepared and had a packed lunch in his heavy bag. It was nothing fancy, just sandwiches, fruit, and cookies, but after the long walk and all of the other exercise, they devoured it rapidly. They didn't bother dressing, though she did refresh the sunblock before she started to burn.
As they were cleaning up the lunch mess, he asked, "You realize there are going to be difficulties if you decide to stay with me?"
"Aren't there difficulties in any relationship?" she retorted.
He was quiet for a second and then nodded. "I suppose so. But, you have to admit, this might be just a bit more complex than most," he said.
"Meh. My best friend dated a circus clown. Talk about problems," she said, shrugging. She was being playful, but there was a serious undercurrent. Whatever trouble came from their relationship, they'd find a way to deal with it. She believed that completely.
He stared at her and then burst out laughing as he shook his head. "Oh, Kitten…you really were worth the trip," he said with admiration in his voice. "Have it your way; we'll take the problems as they come," he said.
"Good, because this was the most romantic day of my life and I want to savor every single minute. We'll worry about everything else some other day," she assured him. She'd gotten through the roughest time in her life, thanks to him, and now she was ready for all the adventures the future had in store for them. There were five million questions swirling around in her brain that she was desperate to ask him, but they had plenty of time for that—nothing but time, really.
