“So noted,” Judge Warner said. “Please file your dismissal as soon as possible. Ms. Gutierrez, you are free to go. I’m very sorry that you had to go through this. I hope that you can put this behind you, and go on with your life. Court is adjourned.” Then he turned to “Jacob.” “Oh, and Mr. McNeil, you are excused. However, in light of your testimony, I would like the bailiffs to take you into custody.” Then he nodded at the bailiffs, who came over to Jacob, and put handcuffs on him.
I breathed a sigh of relief. It was over. It was really over.
Thank God.
Chapter 45
Later on that night, I was having a beer on my balcony with Christian and Esme. Aidan was out on a date, and the three of us were celebrating. We were laughing and joking, and Esme was having the time of her life.
“Oh, Lord. That look on his face when you told him that you knew that he was really William McNeil. I thought he was going to have explosive diarrhea right there on the stand,” she said, laughing.
“Who’s to say that he didn’t?” I said. I was laughing even harder than Esme.
“ You did it,” said Christian. “I can’t believe you pulled it off, but you did.”
I shrugged my shoulders. “He knew that the jig was up, when I asked him if he was going to be willing to give his fingerprint. He knew that the FBI was going to be on his tail, and that, sooner or later, they were going to catch up with him and make him give his fingerprint. He wasn’t going to worm out of it this time. Everybody’s wise to his game by now. Ain’t no way he was going to get away with faking his death a second time. He figured he might as well just come clean.”
It was then that I noticed that my phone is ringing.
“Dude,” Regina said. “I’ve been doing my investigation on who killed your friend, and you’re not going to believe what I found.”
