I laugh and pat him on the back. “It’s my pleasure.”

“Nana!” I hear Adam call Miss Ella and automatically my eyes go to them. Jack helps her over to where Adam and Sophia are, and I excuse myself from Christopher and Maddie so I can get to Jack.

Adam gets up and reaches for a plate so I quickly say, “I’ve already got plates ready for Miss Ella and Jack.” I pick up Jack’s plate and tip my head towards Miss Ella’s plate. “Could you just take it to her?”

Adam takes the plate and steals a piece of cheese. “Eat your own food!” Miss Ella tells him off with a smile on her face. Adam places a kiss on her forehead as he hands her the plate.

“Here you go.” I hold out the plate to Jack and when he takes it, I point to a bench where there is still space to sit. “You want to go sit with me?”

He nods and we walk over to where Tristan, Diane, Lizzie and Jamie are sitting. I sit down next to Jamie so Jack won’t have to. He’s been very cautious of the other girls since the thing with Beverly happened.

“Are you enjoying yourselves?” I ask around the table. Jack starts to eat and I’m glad to see he has such a healthy appetite.

“I love these barbeques,” Jamie says. “I was thinking we could dance later on.”

“That would be fun,” Lizzie says.

“Everyone!” Adam shouts, getting our attention. Christopher and Maddie are standing next to him. A smile splits over my face as Adam throws his arms around them. He looks like a proud father. “Christopher has asked Maddie to marry him.”

Oohs and aahs sound up and everyone takes a turn to congratulate the couple.

Colby catches my attention as he throws his plate to the side and then stalks off. I wonder what’s wrong with him.

Jack finishes his food but I give up on trying to eat with all the excitement. He moves, straddling the bench and facing me, then he scoots as close as he can. His powerful legs cage me in and his arms go around my waist. He just stares at me, his eyes a soft green.

“What?” I whisper, feeling a blush creep up my neck from his intense look.

“I just like looking at you.”

Music blares over the yard and some of the girls start to dance. Christopher and Maddie are standing to the side, swaying romantically in each other’s arms.

Sophia is sitting on Adam’s lap and you can see the two are lost in their own world.

My eyes meet Miss Ella’s. She makes huge eyes, trying to tell me something. I frown at her, but then she just yells. “Dance with Jack!”

Everyone bursts out laughing and it makes me flush red hot. I get up anyway and then hold my hand out to Jack. “Would you like to dance?”

“I can’t,” the words pop from him.

  “That’s okay, I’ll show you.”

Jack places his hand in mine and I pull him to the side where we’ll have some space. I take both his hands and place them on my hips, and then I place my own hands on his broad shoulders. “Just sway from one side to the other.”

We start to sway and I watch Jack as he watches the other’s dancing. Suddenly, he pulls me closer and his arms tighten around me. He smiles widely. “That’s better.”

I let my hands go behind his neck and we get lost in each other.

Last night was so special for me and Jack. Not only was it the first time a man gave me an orgasm, but Jack got that part of himself back too. It doesn’t mean things are all sunshine and roses for us from here on out, not in the least. I’m still worried about this relationship that’s forming between us. Are our feelings real, or did we just gravitate towards each other?

Don’t get me wrong, Jack has the perfect body and he’s strong, but he’s still growing and healing. The other day he was right when he pointed out that I was treating him like a child, because in some ways he’s still that little boy who never got to grow up – and that makes me feel like a pervert for wanting him. It’s a huge obstacle that I’m not quite sure I can get over.

Jack might be all man on the outside, but inside he’s still finding himself. I think he closed himself off over all the years he was forced to be a slave, and now that he’s free to just be himself he’s finally let that part free that he closed off, and that part is still nine years old.

I hold Jack tight and press my ear to his heart. I’ll have to be so careful with him, but one things for sure – no more sex.

It’s a nice evening. Everyone is having fun and the heat of the day is dying down.

Jack straddled the bench again and then pulled me down too. With my back against his chest and my legs stretched out in front of me, I keep drifting off. His arms are tightly around me, his breath stirring my hair.

This moment feels perfect. Just sitting here with Jack and having him hold me is all I need.

“Fire!” Someone screams from somewhere behind us. I sit up and look behind us and sure enough it looks like the stables are on fire.

“The horses!” I scream and then I’m up and running. “Get water!”

There’s a lot of screaming and shouting, and even Miss Ella runs towards the fire at her high age. Jack darts past me at one hell of a speed, dragging the hose behind him. He already opened it and water is spouting everywhere.

Jack is the first one there and he sprays the water right into the heart of the fire. Adam, Tristan, Christopher and the others work to get the horses out and to safety. I feel useless and thrust my hands into my hair. My eyes are stinging from the heat.

The air around us thins quickly as if the fire is sucking all the oxygen from it.

A loud crashing sound comes from the side of the stables as the building starts to crumble under the destruction of the flames - and then we hear a piercing scream from somewhere inside.

Jack drops the hose and it’s with an icy horror that I watch him run towards the fire. “Jack!” I scream, but he doesn’t listen. Miss Ella grabs the hose and she goes after Jack, wetting him as he runs, and then he disappears into the inferno.

It almost looks like Miss Ella is about to go into the burning building too. The panic and horror of the night rips a scream from my aching chest. “No, Miss Ella!” What the hell is wrong with everyone! They can’t just run into the fire!

I run to her and I grab her arm so I can pull her back to where it’s safe. I start to cough and it feels as if the flames are trying to find their way into the heart of me. We’re too close to the fire! Miss Ella bends over and she coughs until her legs give way. I do my best to help her away from the burning stables. “Jack,” she wheezes in between coughs.

Tears blur my sight and I wipe quickly at my stinging eyes. I help Miss Ella to sit and then run back to where the hose is lying. I pick it up and spray water where I last saw Jack run in. The seconds are long and agonizing while we wait for some sign of Jack. My heart pounds faster and faster, and fear sharpens all my senses.

I see movement and for a moment hope spikes sharply in my chest. Colby stumbles from the burning building and although I’m glad to see that he’s okay, I’m still worried for Jack. What’s taking him so long?

Finally, Jack comes out and it feels as if the weight of the world has been lifted from my shoulders! He’s carrying someone. As he gets closer to me I recognize Beverly. What is she doing back here? How did she find the plantation? Colby said he blind … Colby!

  “Adam!” I scream hoarsely.

He swings around, his face black with soot.

“Get Colby! He’s got something to do with this!”

I point to where Colby is stumbling away. He’s heading for the trucks. Adam runs and he quickly catches up with Colby. A slither of relief eases some more of the tension. We’ll deal with Colby and Beverly after the fire has been contained.

I look over my shoulder and then my heart stops. Miss Ella is lying in a small bundle. She’s not moving! I grab the person nearest to me who turns out to be Diane. “Just keep hosing the fire!” I shove the hose into her hands and then I run for Miss Ella.

&n
bsp; “Miss Ella!” I fall to my knees next to her. She’s out cold. I can hear her wheezing. Glancing around for help, I can’t find anyone. I tuck my arm under her shoulders and try to lift her, but I’m not that strong. As if a prayer is answered, Jack appears next to me.

“Where’s Beverly?” I ask him as he gently picks Miss Ella up.

“I left her with Adam.” His voice sounds dead, as if the fire sucked the life from it. He walks fast towards the house and I run ahead of them so I can phone Doc.

After I’ve phoned Doc and he promised that he’d be over in a few minutes, we place Miss Ella on one of the couches. I go get a cloth and some cold water, but before I do anything with it Jack takes it all from me. “I’ll stay with her, go check on the others.” His voice is firm, there’s still no emotion. My mouth drops open and I watch as he gently wipes Miss Ella’s face. I’ve never seen this side of Jack. “Fuck, River! Just go,” he suddenly snaps at me.

He’s never talked that way to me before and it hurts like hell. I run back outside, scared to death of what just happened with Jack.

It takes us over and hour to make sure the fire is out and everyone is accounted for. I saw Doc’s car pull up a while ago. He waved and then rushed into the house. I know he’ll take good care of Miss Ella.

I go to where Adam is busy interrogating Beverly and Colby. I’d rather face them than Jack. I still can’t believe that was him shouting at me.

“What’s going on here?” I ask Adam.

He points at the two sitting on the floor. “Well, from what I can understand Beverly and Colby are in some sort of relationship. Apparently he’s been sneaking her in and out whenever she felt like she wanted go to town. It’s been going on for months. That’s how she knows where the plantation is.” Adam shoves his hands through his hair, looking angry as hell. “I’m sorry, River, I was so caught up in Sophia, I never saw this coming.”

“Just let us go,” Beverly starts to grovel, “we won’t tell a soul where you are.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose and then turn my back to them. I whisper to Adam, “You know what we have to do. They can’t talk. We have too many lives that depend on us.”

Adam gives a firm nod. This is the part that sucks. As much as we want to save every life we possibly can, some just can’t be saved. It’s either Beverly and Colby or the rest of the people living here. It’s sad but they have to be silenced to protect the others. I should have seen that Beverly was past the point of being saved before I brought her here. Now I’m losing a guard, as well. If I had just left her to be a slave Colby might never have turned on us. This is all my fault for not doing my job properly.

“You can’t just off us!” Colby screams as I start to walk away. “River! I swear it’s all her. She made me do it! The fire was her idea! I never wanted to hurt anyone!”

“We gave you the choice! This is all on you,” Adam snaps, his tone ice cold. “You knew what would happen if you turned on us. I told you that the day you started working here. You knew! Don’t blame her for your mistakes.”

I’m a coward for walking away and not doing it myself. I say I don’t want to be like my father but at the end of the day I am. I started all of this to save lives and tonight I ordered two deaths.

I’m a monster just like Steward Sinclair.

  Chapter Nineteen

  Jack~

The fire, the screams and Miss Ella just lying there on the ground - it’s bringing it all back - the nightmare that’s been my life for so long.

The past few weeks I’ve been hiding from myself. I didn’t want to face what happened - I couldn’t. Momma’s death, David’s betrayal and all the years I’ve let people do sick and twisted things to me – it’s as if it just happened all over again.

I had to get River away from me. I didn’t want her to see me like that.

I’m being bombarded by flashes of Momma’s burning body, the strange smile that she had on her face as she died. I keep feeling hands on me. I keep seeing David fucking Sophia. I keep hearing his words and they’re mixing with all the other voices in my head – all the degrading comments that have been flung my way over the years.

‘You’re nothing but a fuck … Thanks for all the money you made us you dumb fuck … Every hole has an expiration date and you’ve reached yours … new Ferrari I bought … you’re nothing but a fuck.’

As soon as the elderly doctor walks into the room, I leave him to see to Miss Ella.

I run to the chapel and I kneel on the floor between all the flowers and bonsai. I smell like smoke and I’m covered in soot and grime, but this is all I have strength for right now – to just kneel here as the repulsive and disgusting memories tear me apart.

Sorrow and bitterness consumes me until there’s nothing left. I cry for the mother I lost. I cry for the brother I lost and the monster that was reborn in his place. David was pocketing the money made from my body being used and he squandered it on things like cars and who knows what else.

All the pain and suffering I endured - all the rapes and beatings – all for a car.

The Westbrooks might have treated me like a dog, but David was much worse. To him I was nothing more than a bank balance.

For so long hope kept me going, but now I know that hope is nothing more than a weakness. Hope breaks you. Hope gives you faith that something might change, but in the end it leaves you with all the empty promises you made yourself. Hope destroys your soul.

Shame consumes me for all the times I let men and women fuck me because I kept telling myself I was doing it for David. Tears stream down my face as I remember the first time I was forced to suck a Sven’s cock. I remember the first time I was tied down and raped by the other slaves because they had to show me how it was done. Everybody in that house hurt me in some way. The slaves would rape and beat each other, even go as far as to kill the weaker ones. They would fight to be the strongest and most wanted. As long as you were wanted you were worth something.

It feels like I’m suffering from delayed shock as I remember the first time I was forced to attend a party and how they made me come against my will.

The memories degrade me until I’m empty. All that’s left is an itch that’s crawling over my skin as if a thousand ants are trying to burrow their way in.

I tear the shirt from my body and get rid of my shoes. Dressed only in jeans I kneel again. This is all I’ve become. This is all that’s left of me.

There’s no more hiding behind the nine year old boy like I’ve been doing for the past months. That little boy had hopes and dreams – but he’s gone now.

I’m a twenty-seven year old man with a heart full of vengeance and hatred.

  ~*~

It’s still dark when I knock on Adam’s door. It doesn’t take him long to answer, which means he was already up.

“Jack,” he looks shocked to see me.

I’m still covered in grime, dressed only in my jeans. My whole body is trembling with rage. “I need your help,” I whisper.

He glances behind him before he steps outside and closes the door behind him. “Let’s go look at the damage that’s been done to the stables and then we can talk.”

We walk in silence until we reach the stables. Only piles of ash and wood cover the ground.

“What can I help with?” Adam asks as he starts to pick up some of the bigger pieces of wood.

I start to help him and I start to tell him my plan. “I want to go back to Cameron.” His head snaps up and I see the shock on his face so I quickly explain, “The past few weeks I’ve been living in a trance. I need to go back and make them pay for what they’ve done to me.”

“So you want revenge?” I can see Adam doesn’t like the idea.

“I’m going to go back and kill them. You can come with and help me or I’ll go by myself, but those monsters need to pay for what they have done.”

“How do you plan on making them pay?”

“That’s why I need you. I want to go when it
s one of Cameron’s busy nights. I want to get as many people as possible. You can take me as your slave. Just get me in and I’ll do the rest.”

“You still haven’t told me what you’re planning to do once I get you in.”

I point to the stables. “Did you see how quickly it all burned down?”

Adam nods and I can see he’s starting to understand me. “They burned my mother so I want to make sure every last one of them burns the same way.”

Adam takes a deep breath and then stares at the pile of debris. I don’t push him for an answer. I just carry on working, clearing all the rubble to the side. We work side by side for most of the day and it’s only in the late afternoon that Adam says, “I’ll do it.”

I drop the piece of wood I was carrying and I stare at Adam. He comes to stand really close to me and whispers, “I’ll do it because I can’t imagine what you and Sophia must have gone through. But you need to understand what you’re going to be doing. You’re going to kill people. I’m doing it to stop them. There is no right reason for killing another human being, but when they are so far above the law then it’s up to people like us to stop them. I want you to make sure that you can do it. I don’t want to get there and you freeze up on me. We’ll be endangering everyone here if someone sees us.”

“If we’re going to a party or scheduling a meeting they will see us,” I state the obvious.

“We don’t have to attend the party. We just go, set the place alight and make sure no one leaves alive. Then we get our asses out of there.”

“As long as they die.” That’s the important part.

“They will.” Adam wipes the sweat from his brow and then looks at the manor. “We have to tell River.”

“No!” I shake my head hard. I don’t want her involved.

“She’s my business partner and best friend, Jack. I will not go behind her back. Secrets only destroy trust.”

I understand what he’s saying but I still don’t like it. I know she’s going to try and stop us. She thinks I’m some lost puppy she picked up, a kid that can’t think for himself. I guess I am partially to blame for her thinking that. I practically disappeared the past few weeks. I did what was expected of me. I lived in a safe bubble trying to hide from myself and the pain.
