Growl For Me (A Camden Falls Wolf Pack Book 1) Page 6

by J. L. Beck

“Get away from me.” I growl, shoving past him. I need some air, some time to think my entire life through. This isn’t how I want to live my life, not by a long shot.

“Where the hell do you think you’re going?” I can feel the rage in his words as he grips me and twists me around just as I make it beyond the door and out into the garden. Where we’re standing no one can see us.

“I need some space, some air…” I try and keep my facial expressions on lock down, but it’s so hard when all I want to do is stop hiding under the mask I make myself put on every day.

Jeffery smiles sinisterly, his eyes look almost completely black from the lack of lighting where we’re standing. I can feel his gaze penetrate mine and I just want the moment to end. Once upon a time I thought he was gorgeous, tall, dark, and handsome with the godly features. Now I know he’s nothing more than a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

“Space? Baby, you’re my future wife. You get space if I tell you that you can have it. You don’t just do whatever you want, do you understand me?” His chest pushed against mine once more. My back rested against the exposed brick wall behind me, and I knew I was trapped.

“Please just stop.” The mask cracked slightly, my emotions showing.

“Stop?” Jeffery mocked me, his hands rubbing up and down my body. I batted them away but I felt helpless. “I’ll stop when I fucking want to stop.” He yelled, his saliva clinging to my face well his hands continued to touch me. I was frozen in time, terrified because I knew that it wouldn’t matter if I told him to stop or not.

I heard it before I felt it… Something strange happened in the next second. A man in a tux appeared behind Jeffery, and in nothing more than a second Jeffery was tossed into the woods. My hero’s eyes were a shade of gold that shook me to the very core. I saw love, adoration, and blinding rage in his steely gaze and still I knew deep down in my heart this man before me would not hurt me, not ever.

“Are you okay?” He barely got the words out; his jaw was clenched so tight. I couldn’t make out all his features but from what I could see he was gorgeous, standing at probably six feet five inches, and weighing in at around two hundred and seventy-five pounds. He looked like he’s been cut from stone and I wanted to reach out and touch him just to make sure he was real.

With the wine and all the emotions flooding my veins all at once I felt woozy, my head was spinning. Leaning forward I went to take a step, misjudged the distance and ended up crashing into the mystery man’s chest.

  Warmth. Safety. Home.

The words slammed into me without thought. I felt them deep down in my soul. I inhaled fresh oxygen through my nose but got nothing but the scent of the man I was currently resting my face against.

The smell of pine trees, aftershave, and just crisp fall air filled my lungs instantly. I inhaled his scent as he held me against his chest with care.

“Are you okay mate?” Even his voice soothed me, and I shivered against his large frame. I never wanted this man to leave. Then I realized what he said… mate? What did that mean, and why did that term sound familiar.

“Hey assfuck, that’s my wife, get your filthy fingers off of her.” Jeffery’s angry voice vibrated through me and just like that the calm I’d felt faded away, and so did I. As the mystery man stepped away from me to deal with Jeffery I did the dumbest thing of all. I face planted into the concrete below, the last image appearing before my eyes, that of the man with the golden eyes.

The man that I knew would protect me with his life.
