“Not yet, nearly. Just a little patience.”
“Mommy says I don’t have that big word, just like you.” I laugh out loud at him.
“I think Mommy could be right, buddy.”
Spotting Leroy coming towards us, I hold back my wild-child son so his parents and sister can see him first. After all, they’re the family, and we are just the framily.
“Okay, off you go.” Letting Johnny’s hand go, he races to Leroy and almost climbs him like a monkey up a tree.
Feeling Paige’s hand on my arm, she still gives me that tingle every time.
“You did good, Mason. Look at your boys.” I try not to let anyone see the small tears in my eyes.
“We did good, baby. Both of us.” I lean down to kiss her, and my little Maisy too.
“Just like we’ve always said. Family is more than blood. It’s who you choose to love and keep safe.”
I wrap my arm around her shoulders.
“Every day I’m grateful for the love of every person in our lives. But you hold my heart, Paige, and you always will.”
“My heart is yours, Mason. You took it a long time ago.”
Looking up at me with her beautiful eyes, I say the only words that suit.
“And I’m keeping it safe with me, my forever girl.”
