Murder at the Beach Page 4

by P. Creeden

They were so close to each other. Had they ever been so close? The breeze picked up and tugged at the strands of Emma’s hair. His eyes searched hers and then he leaned in closer. Would he finally kiss her? Would he confirm that he felt the same way about her as she did about him? What was happening? Her mind screamed at her, and it felt as though her heart actually stopped. Her breathing had.

The sound of the glass door coming open again broke the spell. Colby pulled away quickly and bent down to pet Gabby on the head as Emma’s father said, “I brought enough burgers out for everyone.”

  Colby laughed. “Sounds delicious.”

Emma blinked hard, looking up at the moon as she started to breathe again. Would Colby have kissed her if her father hadn’t chosen that moment to step out? Her heart raced in response to the question in her mind. She couldn’t hope that. She had to have imagined it. Molly leaned against her leg and whined just low enough that Emma had to look down at her. She pat the puppy on the head as she smiled. “I bet you’re hungry too. Let’s go eat.”

She peered once more at the moon before turning around. Was it just a sort of magic spell after all? They say that the full moon made people have crazy thoughts. Maybe that was one of the things that had influenced Jenna. Maybe it was what made Emma believe for half a moment that Colby might kiss her. She let out a sigh and then smiled as she came to the picnic table and sat beside Cora. She resigned herself to the fact that if she was right and Colby had tried to kiss her, she didn’t miss out on it forever—he’d try again, right? If it was really just the influence of the moon, then he wouldn’t. Even though the thought of it made her stomach flip, part of her couldn’t wait to find out which it was.
