“I don’t have anything to say to you.” Lisa tried closing the door, but David slipped his foot between the door and the frame.
“I’m sorry.”
“Get your foot out of the way.”
“Lisa, look at me.”
“I don’t have anything to say to you so you might as well leave.” Lisa felt the tears in her eyes. The last thing she wanted him to see was her crying. “Please, just leave.” Her shoulders slumped.
The smell of her tears hit him as hard as watching her shoulders just drop. “Lisa?”
“Please, just go,” she pleaded.
“I can’t.”
“You have to go. Your mate is waiting for you.” Lisa couldn’t keep the sadness out of her voice, just like she couldn’t look at him.
“My mate is standing in front of me.”
Lisa rubbed her nose with the back of her hand. “Don’t tell me things that aren’t true. Your bear has chosen someone else for you, so please go.”
David reached out and caressed her face with the back of his hand. “My bear has chosen a mate. He and I have chosen you.” He put his hand under her chin and made her look up at him. “Lisa, you are my mate. No one else. Just you.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks. “But Tina said your bear had already picked April.”
David swallowed. “My bear would never pick April. He can’t even stand the woman. I don’t even like for her. I’ve just been polite to her because she’s my brother’s sister-in-law. There is nothing between her and me or her and my bear.”
“But—”
“Lisa, you are my mate. You are my only mate. I want you. My bear wants you.”
Lisa closed her eyes and shook her head. She just knew she couldn’t be hearing the truth. Why would he want her over April? Why would he want the over-stuffed girl when he could have the fashion model?
“Lisa, look at me.”
She shook her head again.
“Lisa, look at me.” David let his bear filter through his voice.
Lisa, unable to resist the power in his voice, opened her eyes and looked at David. She blinked several times trying to stop the tears without rubbing her already red eyes.
“My bear and I know there is only one mate for us. We both knew you were our mate when we smelled your rose and honey scent. We both want you and only you. We want to see you huge with our cubs.” He tilted her head a little more and claimed her lips.
Lisa tried resisting the kiss, but her resistance didn’t last very long. She opened her lips, giving David full access to her mouth. He deepened the kiss and then slowly ended it, leaving Lisa gasping for breath. She just stared at him.
“I want you and only you. I’m sorry about yesterday. It will never happen again. I promise you that.”
Lisa heard his words. She knew what he was asking and she wanted to believe him. It hurt at the thought of doing anything but believe him. She drew in a deep breath and let it out slowly. At the same time she stepped back from the door and let it open wider, giving him access to her house.
David quickly stepped into her living room before she could have any second thoughts about what she was doing. He watched her close the door. “I brought supper with me.” He held up the bag from The Blue Plate Diner.
Lisa gestured toward the dining table.
David nodded and put the bag on the table. Slowly he turned back to face Lisa. It was obvious the robe she had on had seen better days, and her face was red and blotchy from crying and her hair looked like she had just gotten out of bed, but she never looked more beautiful than any woman he had ever seen. “Come here.” He held out his hand to her.
Lisa nibbled on her bottom lip as she stared at his hand. Is this what I want? She asked herself even as she took her first step toward him.
Mate! Want mate! His bear was almost jumping up and down.
David could only nod in agreement with his bear. He wanted his mate too.
Lisa crossed the room. Slowly she slipped her hand into his.
David wrapped his hand around hers and pulled her closer to him, until he was able to wrap his arms around her. “I’m never letting you go. You are my mate.” He picked her up and carried her to her bedroom.
Lisa gasped and wrapped her arms around his neck when he picked her up.
David gently laid her on the bed and pulled the ties. The robe fell to her sides, revealing the t-shirt she was wearing. “Beautiful,” he whispered.
Lisa didn’t say anything. She just stared at him and licked her lips.
David watched her tongue caress her pink lips and he knew exactly where he wanted them. It only took him a few seconds to strip out of his clothes before he ripped her t-shirt straight down the middle.
Very gently he took a beautiful mound into each hand. Slowly he caressed and massaged the mounds before turning them up so he could suck one nipple and then the next.
A low, throaty moan full of need escaped Lisa’s lips.
David reluctantly released her mounds and climbed onto the bed. He used his right knee to push her legs apart. The scent of her honey arousal filled the air, making his mouth water. “Are you my mate?” he asked her.
Lisa nodded her head.
David felt his heart pounding in his chest. “Say it. Say you are my mate.”
Lisa licked her lips. “Yes, I’m your mate,” she whispered.
David’s lips turned up into to a grin. He threw his head back and he and his bear let out a ferocious roar, letting all in hearing distance know she was his mate. Knowing she was already wet for him, he plunged into her, fully sheathing himself in her in one quick thrust.
Lisa moaned in pleasure. Her back arched.
David pulled slowly out until the tip of his cock rested at the entrance of her pussy, causing her to whimper. He plunged back into her, pushing deeper. Over and over he pulled out of her and plunged back, until the tip of his cock brushed the mouth of her womb.
Lisa clung to him, meeting each thrust with one of her own. Raw need consumed her as she felt her pleasure build, but just when she thought she could take no more, David pulled out of her. She cried out in protest.
“Are you my mate?” demanded David.
“Yes.”
“Do you accept me and my bear as your mates?”
“Yes, please, I need you. I’m yours.”
David didn’t wait another second. He plunged deep and hard into her as he sank his teeth into her shoulder.
Lisa cried out as wave after wave of pleasure crashed over her as she found her release.
In seconds, David followed behind her, roaring his own release, sending his hot seed deep into her quivering womb.
As the last tremors slowly faded, David withdrew his teeth from her shoulder and licked the wound until it closed, leaving his mark on her shoulder for everyone to see. “My beautiful mate, you are mine.” He planted a passionate kiss on her lips as he rolled them over so that she rested on top of him.
In minutes sleep claimed both of them.
CHAPTER 5
The smell of coffee and bacon dragged Lisa out of the pleasure filled dream, causing her to groan in frustration. She wanted to stay in the dream with David, but it drifted away. She raised her hands over her head and arched her back as she stretched. Muscles she didn’t even know she had were sore. The fuzzy sleep cobwebs cleared from her brain and the memories of last night rushed back to her.
Lisa’s eyes popped open and she looked to the right side of the bed, where David had been when she finally fell asleep in his arms. She turned several shades of red as both embarrassment and disappointment both fought for dominance.
Not again. Please, not again.
Lisa let her hand caress the cool sheets. It was obvious he had been gone for some time.
“Good morning beautiful.” David, fully dressed, walked into the bedroom carrying a cup of coffee.
Lisa pulled the sheet over her naked body.
David and his bear growled their disapproval. He went arou
nd to her side of the bed and put the steaming cup of coffee down on the nightstand. He then sat down on the bed next to Lisa. He gently tugged the sheet out of her hands and back down exposing her breasts and stomach to him. “Don’t hide your gorgeous body from me.”
Lisa’s face turned even redder. “This body is anything but gorgeous.” Her voice was a low whisper.
Our mate is beautiful.
“You are the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. Both my bear and I think so.” David echoed his bear’s words. He cupped her breasts and leaned down, planting a kiss on each one. He tilted his head up and kissed her lips.
Lisa’s soft moans of pleasure filled the room.
David broke the kiss and rested his forehead against Lisa’s. For the first time in a long time he and his bear fully agreed about two things. Lisa was their mate, and they were both content and at ease when they were around her.
“You bit me last night!” Lisa frowned as she remembered the initial pain when he sank his teeth into her shoulder, but it had quickly faded away, replaced by liquid warmth, and now it didn’t hurt at all.
“Yes.”
“And now I’m your mate?”
“Yes, we are mated, but you were my mate before that. The bit just made it official, letting others know you are mine.”
“And that means what, exactly?” Lisa had a little bit of an idea, but she wanted him to tell her.
David could hear the worry in her voice. “In human terms, it means we are married or life.”
“As in permanent, no divorce kind of married for life?” asked Lisa.
“As in you’re stuck with me and my bear for the rest of our lives.” David caressed the side of Lisa’s face. “And I wouldn’t want it any other way. You are our other half, the half that completes us.”
The wrinkles on Lisa’s forehead slowly smoothed out “You really want me?” she asked in disbelief.
“Yes.” David pulled her into his arms. Her honey rose scent tickled his nose. “I want you now and forever. I want to see your belly heavy with my cub.”
Yes! Mate with cub.
Soon. David kissed her again. “I brought you coffee with sugar and cream.”
“How did you know I like my coffee that way?”
David gave her a cocky little grin. “I saw the cream in the fridge.” He handed her the steaming mug of coffee. “Be careful.”
“I think you got lucky,” said Lisa as she took the mug.
“I know I got lucky.” David waggled his eyebrows at her.
She rolled her eyes. “Why are you up so early?” She took a sip of coffee.
“I have to go to the office and get ready for a meeting at eight with a new client and you have classes to go teach.”
Lisa took another sip of coffee. No one had ever brought her anything to eat or drink in bed. Even when she was sick as a kid, her mom insisted she go to the kitchen table to eat or drink.
“Breakfast is waiting for you on the stove.”
“You didn’t have to do that.”
“I wanted to.” He glanced at his watch. “I’ve got to get going.” David stood up.
His bear growled a protest.
David ignored the animal. “Dinner tonight at my place, and bring a bag.”
“Bring a bag?”
“Yeah, for the sleep over we’re going to have.” David grinned.
“And why would I want to sleep at your place?” Lisa hid her grin as best she could behind the coffee mug.
“Because I’m irresistible.” David took the coffee mug out of her hands and put it on the nightstand. He leaned down putting one hand on the headboard and the other on the mattress beside Lisa. He captured her lips with his.
The kiss sent a rush of desire and need coursing through her body. She wanted to rip off his clothes. She needed him to quench the ache building inside her.
David broke the kiss. His eyes glowed. “I have to go, but we will finish this when you come by my house tonight for dinner.”
Lisa licked her lips. “It’s not nice to tease me.”
David grinned. “That was just a taste of what’s to come tonight, if you decide to come to my place for a sleep over.”
“Not funny.” She shook her finger at him.
“But you’ll be thinking about me all day.”
Lisa snorted.
David kissed her again. “Be careful going into work. It started raining during the night.”
“I will. You be careful too.” Lisa watched David leave her bedroom. A few minutes later she heard the front door open and close.
She stretched again. It was so tempting to call in sick again today, but she knew it wasn’t possible. Because of district policy, if she called in sick a second day, she would have to have a doctor’s note to prove she really was sick. So she forced herself to get up and went to take a shower.
Lisa stood on the side porch, staring at the rain. She sighed. There was no way around it. She was going to get wet. It wasn’t that she didn’t like rainy days, in fact it was just the opposite. She loved them. She loved her house too, but she didn’t like getting wet when she had to go out to the car during rainstorms. It sucked not having an attached garage or a covered walkway to the car. She glance at the dark gray morning skies. The rain wasn’t ending any time soon.
Lisa opened the large black umbrella and hurried down the steps to her car, and got in as fast as she could, dumping her bag on the seat next to her and then now closed umbrella on the passenger side floor. The car started on the first try. Lisa let it idle until the engine heated and the vents started blowing warm air. She put on her seat belt and carefully pulled out of the driveway and onto the street. Being just a little bit outside of town had its advantages, especially on one of the many county roads surrounding Bryant Station. Traffic was almost nonexistent. Lisa glanced in her rearview mirror. In the distance she saw what looked like a large, black truck. It didn’t surprise her. There were a lot of trucks in the area because of the farms and ranches.
She turned her attention back to the road. Pockets of standing water were everywhere, making the road dangerous.
HONK!
HONK!
HONK!
The honking truck startled Lisa. She glanced in her rearview mirror. The black truck was so close to her bumper, all she could see was the huge cattle guard on the front of the truck.
“What is your problem?” asked Lisa even though she knew no one heard her. The truck kept honking, but there was nowhere for Lisa to pull over so it could pass, plus she knew the curve with the steep ravine was coming up. She had to slow down, especially with the rain and the slick road.
She glanced in the rearview mirror for a split second before she focused her attention back on the road in front of her.
Something wasn’t right.
Lisa glanced in the mirror again. The truck had dropped back a little bit, but it was still too close, especially on the wet road.
Her grasp on the steering wheel tightened. The curve was just in front of her. She felt cold even though the heater was on high.
Lisa looked up just in time to see the truck’s high beams coming straight at her.
The truck wasn’t slowing down.
Her heart sped up.
The impact of the cattle guard on the rear of her car threw Lisa forward. The seatbelt was the only thing that kept her in her seat.
The sickening crunch of metal filled the car when the truck hit her again. Lisa jerked the steering wheel, desperate to keep the car on the road.
Lisa screamed.
The car skidded out of control.
Bright lights blinded her. The deafening squeal of metal bending and the crackle of glass breaking filled the car.
Lisa was thrown against the driver’s side door. Her head slammed into the glass causing the glass to shatter. Sharp, excruciating pain shot through her skull. Lisa’s world spun out of control as the car rolled side over side down the ravine. Images of David flickered through her mind. If wasn’t
fair. She had just found him and she hadn’t even had the chance to tell him she loved him.
Her world went black.
David felt a sudden, sharp pain in the left side of his head and then it was gone as if it had never happened. He frowned as he rubbed the left side of his head.
His bear let out an angry growl.
“Mr. Anderson, are you okay?” Tessa Enders, his assistant, stared at her boss.
David shook his head. “Yeah, I’m fine.” He frowned. The pain was gone, but he felt odd. Something wasn’t right. Even his bear was pacing and growling. He looked at his watch. Lisa should be at school by now. He shook his head.
“Are you sure?” asked Tessa again. She looked at David over her glasses and frowned.
“I’m good.” He looked down at the drawings spread out on his desk.
“Mr. Willis is here.”
David glanced at his watch. “He’s early.”
Tessa raised an eyebrow. “Should I show him in or have him wait in the lounge area?”
David nodded. “Show him in. If we start early, we can finish early.” He rubbed the left side of his head again.
Tessa frowned. “Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked him again.
“Yeah, I’m sure. It was nothing. Go ahead and send Mr. Willis in.” David didn’t even bother to look up from the drawings.
Without another word, Tessa turned and silently left the office.
David’s hands balled into fists. The unsettling nag plucked at his insides. Something was not right. Even his bear paced back and forth like a caged animal. As soon as he got finished with the meeting, he would go see his mom and dad. Maybe they could give him some insight about what was wrong with him.
The wails of sirens grew louder and louder. Both David and Theo Willis looked up from the blueprints they were discussing.
“With this weather, I’m surprised we haven’t heard sirens sooner.” Theo Willis took off his glasses and pulled a lens cloth out of the inside pocket of his jacket. Methodically he cleaned his glasses.
David stepped over the large windows and looked down over Main Street. Several police cars flew down the street. A few seconds later the fire truck followed closely by the Special First Responders Unit raced after the police cruisers.
