Writing The Divorce has been a new challenge for me, having moved from police procedurals to give a psychological thriller a try. I love reading this kind of book, so it seemed a natural progression for me to have a go at writing one. With so few characters in the story, I was able to get right into the mind of each, and I have enjoyed developing their stories and their secrets.
Research for the book involved reading about cases of coercive control within marriages, something that wasn’t considered a criminal offence until just a few years ago. The real-life stories I read were harrowing and heartbreaking, with victims of domestic violence and emotional abuse in some cases enduring decades of horrendous treatment that went unnoticed by family and friends and ignored by authorities. It is easy for someone who has never been a victim of domestic abuse to ask, ‘Why didn’t she/he just leave?’ but the issues are sadly far more complex than that.
I hope you loved The Divorce; if you did, I would be very grateful if you could write a review. I’d love to hear what you think, and it makes such a difference helping new readers to discover one of my books for the first time.
I love hearing from my readers – you can get in touch on my Facebook page, through Twitter, or Goodreads.
Thanks,
Victoria Jenkins

She realised she had never felt scared before, not properly; not like this.

Why were they doing this to her?
* * *
Detective Alex King is called to a terrifying scene: a man has been murdered, in an abandoned derelict building, and a fire has been started. The victim had no home, no hope and very little to live for. He was someone who desperately needed help… but what he found instead was murder.
* * *
It soon becomes clear that this death was just the first of many… and that someone is targeting society’s most vulnerable. The people who most need rescuing, who have nothing left to lose, are suddenly at risk from a ruthless killer who leaves fire as his calling card.
* * *
As Alex fights the clock to solve the case before someone else dies, she suddenly finds her own safety under threat. Is this a figure from her past hell-bent on revenge, or could the murderer be even closer than she thinks?
* * *
Nobody’s Child is an unputdownable detective thriller that will keep you up all night. Readers of Robert Bryndza, Karin Slaughter and Angela Marsons will love this.

Acknowledgements
Firstly, a massive thank you to my editor, Jenny Geras, for suggesting I give a psychological thriller a go and for supporting me so fully through every stage of this process. This book has felt like a real team effort, and I have loved writing it. Thanks also to my agent, Anne, who is always there for me in moments of panic (which are regular!). To my fellow Bookouture authors, thank you for all your ongoing support (did I mention moments of panic?) and for never failing to make me laugh – in particular, thanks to Shalini Boland and Angie Marsons for offering advice and guidance when it has been much needed. To Kim Nash and Noelle Holten, thanks for looking out for me on both a professional and personal level – the Bookouture family really is a special one.
Thanks to Liz Hunt for sharing her knowledge and expertise in marriage counselling; your insight was invaluable to the writing of this book. Thanks also to my first ever beta reader, the lovely Jo Quinn – expect another in a few months’ time!
To my own family, a huge thank you as always for the babysitting that allows me to get these books written – I couldn’t do it without you. Steve, you are a brilliant father and the best husband; you have always encouraged me to follow my dreams, and without you none of this would be possible. Thank you.
Dad, you will always be with me in everything I write and everything I do. I miss you every day, but I like to think you’re up there somewhere watching Mia grow. I hope we make you proud. Life has continued to deal blows this year, with the los
s of my neighbour and friend, Joy. I miss your smile and hearing your voice at the end of the phone. This one, lovely lady, is for you.
