Cheesy, yes. And yet, I waited, and then I heard it, the little sniff. I grinned widely, certain I’d won.
“Lucas?” She asked softly.
“Hmmm?”
“Did you picture me in an outfit like the one from tonight when we first met?”
I shrugged, scooping out the last of the dessert and feeding it to her. “I suppose a picture of something like it flashed in my head when I heard your name.”
She swallowed and leaned against me, dropping her head back to meet my eyes. “And what do you suppose other men will picture when they look at your daughter, who will most likely look a lot like me, and are introduced to Ruby St. James.”
I froze. Well, fuck.
She smiled with smug satisfaction at the look on my face. “I win.”
I grumbled but had no argument.
“Maybe we’ll use it for her middle name.”
Jade laughed heartily and patted the side of my face sympathetically.
“Babe, it doesn’t really matter what her name is, if she looks much like me, they’ll be picturing it anyway.”
The absolute and complete horror I felt at the moment must have been clear on my face because Jade scrambled to her knees and faced me.
“Are you okay? What’s wrong?”
“Fuck, no,” I croaked. “No girls. Tell the doctor to change it. We can only have boys.”
Jade’s concern quickly dissolved into another fit of laughter and I glared at her.
“You sound just like Bailey’s husband, Wyatt.” She rolled her eyes and started clearing things off of the bed while I calmed down.
She urged me to slip down so I was laying on my back and she curled herself into me, yawning.
“I mean it, Jade. After this one, boys only.”
She sighed. “Okay, Lucas. But that means no more getting pregnant, so we won’t be having sex anymore.”
“What the fuck?” I roared, jackknifing up and knocking Jade off of my chest.
She fell into a puddle of giggles at my reaction.
“Oh, babe. You should see the look on our face.”
I did not find her joke the least bit funny. “It’s not something you joke about, Jade.”
“Relax, lover boy,” she said as she snuggled into her pillow.
My eyes narrowed as I stared at her voluptuous body. I felt the overwhelming need to prove it was no joking matter.
Tossing her pillow and blanket away, I attacked her with the sole purpose of making sure she would never ever, even consider the idea of being deprived of the pleasure I could bring her.
By the time I was done, we both collapsed on the bed, sweaty, practically comatose.
“You’re right,” she panted. “I couldn’t live without it.”
“Damn fucking straight,” I grunted.
“You’ll just have to wear a condom,” she said and started giggling again.
I snorted, “Nothing between us, sweetheart.” I summoned the rest of my strength to smack her sweet little ass before wrapping myself around her. Snuggling closer, one hand resting possessively on her tummy, I sighed and buried my face in her neck.
I’d go hunting for a new name in the morning. I was determined to find one that told the world she was my treasure, just like her mother.
