It had only been during the last year that he'd presented the prospect of them having children together. Until Dixon brought it up, Grace honestly hadn't known vampires could impregnate anyone. None of the lab tests she'd conducted had ever led her to believe a natural conception was possible. But according to him, it was a possibility.
Vampires couldn't get pregnant with each other. If a human female was the carrier, they could, which made female vampires barren.
"I've got a great feeling about it this time. I feel very confident.” He took a peek around the shower curtain with his shampoo-covered head to offer her a wink.
Grace couldn't help but smile back as she looked in the mirror. Her skin was certainly taking on a paler complexion. The freckles on the bridge of her nose stood out even more and she'd lost some weight, but no one said it would be easy to sustain a vampire. According to her husband, most vamps had several regulars they would feed from so they didn't put too much pressure on the one, but she didn't care. She could handle this burden as long as Dixon stayed by her side and her side only.
She turned her attention to the little stick stuck inside the urine-filled cup. It was time, but she was scared to pull it out and disappoint him again.
"Grace."
She avoided his eyes.
"C'mon, just get it over and done with.” The water still ran, but she knew he'd paused to concentrate on her.
She nodded as her shaky fingers wrapped around the small piece of cardboard. Grace took a deep breath and let the wonderful scent of the shampoo fill her nasal passage. She released it slowly and lifted the little stick with the result, a little higher.
Her heartbeat so fast she felt like she was going to pass out. Thump-thumpaty-thump-thumpaty-thump was the new rhythm, and it would forever be the soundtrack for this one moment.
"Grace, bring down the volume of that fear, or I'm going to have to take you again,” he warned.
A nervous chuckle escaped her as she took a look at what had her confused. All of a sudden, she couldn't remember which meant pregnant and which meant she wasn't. She sighed, picked up the box on the basin and compared the two.
Her heart literally stopped for a second. It skipped the next beat as the result finally seeped into her brain.
"Well, come on. Don't keep me in suspense any more than you already have,” Dixon said behind her.
"It's..."
The turn of the taps signaled he'd switched the water off. He was done with the shower. There was no excuse, or reason, for her to keep him in suspense any longer.
"Gracie, I'm gonna snatch it off you in a sec!"
"Oh, my God ... according to this we're positive."
"And positive means?"
"Positive means positive—we're pregnant!"
His lips spread into a huge smile as she turned to face him. Dixon stepped out of the shower and threw his arms around her, wetting her towel-wrapped body all over again. “We're really expecting a child?” He drew away from her just a little. His eyes filled with unshed tears, and a beaming smile curved his lips.
She nodded with a mixture of excitement and terror swirling within her. For the first time since they'd embarked on this journey together, Grace wondered what would happen when their baby was born. Though with a loving husband by her side, she knew they'd face it together.
"Congratulations Mrs. Kinley."
"Yeah, congrats to you too—"
"Hey, no more frowning. This is what we've wanted for a while now, isn't it?” He lifted her chin to meet his gaze.
Grace nodded. “We're having a baby! Can you believe we're having a baby? The scientific possibilities are amazing."
An anxious frown crossed his face. “Grace, we can't tell anyone about this, okay? It's going to have to be our little secret. I always knew this was possible, but if others catch wind of it, I don't know what it'll mean for us."
She knew he was right and would never expose her own child to such treatment anyway. She'd seen enough things inside the labs to make her skin crawl even today. “Of course, this is no one else's business."
"Good,” he said with a smile. “Because I've got some other urgent business I need to attend to."
She laughed when he pressed his body against hers. Dixon wrapped his arms around Grace, lifted her up and headed for the bedroom with his erection wedged between them.
This is a good morning, she thought to herself when he delicately placed her on the bed. She could feel the sunshine outside press against the window. It was a vampiric side effect the blood host also suffered. As long as the thick drapes kept the light out, they'd both be fine and safe from the sun.
"I love you, Gracie,” he whispered against her lips.
"I love you, too.” She glanced at their matching wedding bands, still shiny in the dim light around them.
"Now we've got everything we've ever wanted,” he murmured into her hair.
She nodded. Her only concern now was how the pregnancy would affect their little sexy games.
