Trevor took Karen's face in his hands and looked her in the eyes. They both fought back tears. Karen thought he might tell her that he loved her. But that would complicate things even more.
“I'll never forget you Karen Taylor.”
Karen smiled and wiped a tear from her cheek. “Stay out of trouble, Trevor Kent. Don't make me come all the way back here to put you in prison.”
Trevor smirked. “That's a tempting offer.”
Karen kissed him on the cheek and got in the cab without giving him another glance. She would break down if she saw his face one more time.
Trevor had changed her for the better. She'd never met a man quite like Trevor before. And she seriously doubted she would ever meet someone like him again.
Trevor stood on the corner of the street and waved goodbye as the cab drove off. He wanted to run after her and make her stay. Marry her and be with her forever. But that's not how real life worked.
They were from different worlds and it would never work.
But they both could dream about what if.
Epilogue
Karen was shocked at the reception she received when she returned to the FBI. Every big-time boss had congratulated her on a job well done. It made Karen think that they didn't have much faith in her in the first place to solve this case.
Things were moving fast. She'd only been back a week and the higher ups had already assigned her to a new case: a missing woman in Colorado.
Karen didn't have much time to pack. Time was of the essence when it came to missing persons. In most cases if they weren't found in the first forty-eight hours, the chances of finding them were very slim.
Sixteen hours had already elapsed since the woman was reported missing. She needed to get there as fast as she could.
Karen threw together a bag and checked outside to see a cab ready to take her to the airport.
She heaved her bag out and threw it into the back seat. A familiar roar made her stop from getting in the cab. She looked up to see Trevor Kent on a motorcycle stop next to the cab.
Her jaw dropped to the floor. The cab driver yelled at her to hurry up but she couldn't hear him anymore. She ran to Trevor and almost knocked him off his bike.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
Trevor unhooked his helmet and kissed Karen harder than she'd ever been kissed before. “Sorry I was an idiot. I'm here for you now.”
Karen head was spinning from the surprise and the kiss. “But what about your MC?”
“I'll still go back to help out and vote but they can get on without me.”
Karen couldn't help but grin. She had hoped something like this would happen. She wondered if she was a dream.
The cab driver honked on his horn. The smile faded when she remembered where she was going. “But I have a new case. I need to go to Colorado.”
“I'm coming with you,” Trevor replied without hesitation.
Karen jumped on Trevor again and kissed him. She couldn't believe what was happening.
“The cab is waiting. Let's go then,” Karen said.
Trevor shook his head. “I'm not making the same mistake twice. I'll take us to the airport.”
He handed a helmet to Karen. She ran to the cab and pulled her bag out. She didn't even bother to tell the cab that she didn't need him anymore.
The driver got the idea when he saw Karen jump on the motorcycle and drive off.
Karen held onto Trevor tight as they weaved in and out of traffic. The wind whipped through her hair.
Her life was finally coming together now.
She didn't know how things were going to work out but she didn't care. Karen could get through anything if Trevor was by her side.
