Richard didn’t answer her question directly. “I still firmly believe this is the wrong thing to do,” said Richard. “Even though she may have led a pack of farmers with pitchforks into a fight, they weren’t following her. They were following John, the man she pretended to be. Those who have sworn an oath to John won’t do it with her. No one will pledge allegiance to her.”
He was right, I thought.
“I will!” said Dorian to me. “I will serve under your command.”
“As will I!” said Shane.
Both of them offered me their swords.
“That settles it. If knights are willing to follow her, it is official then,” said the King. “Unless My Lady has something to add?”
Richard sat down, unsatisfied that his demands weren’t met. I took a step closer to my mentor before speaking. “The last eight years of my life have not been entirely a lie. Every drop of sweat and blood that I spilled was mine, not John’s. Robert and Greta have kept me safe from unknown foes who threatened my life. Raising me as their son was the only way they could protect their newfound daughter. I’m sure they never meant for this lie to go as far as me being knighted, but those who know me well,” I said, staring at Richard, “know that I can get into trouble even in my sleep.” Richard snorted. I walked until I stood before him and bowed in front of him. “The people around me have made me who I am. I’ve learned from the best what it means to be a knight, but if My Lord believes I’m unworthy of such a calling, then My Lord must be right for nobody knows me better, and there is no one else on this room in whose judgment I would trust more.” I laid my sword horizontally on the floor in front of me as a sign of surrender.
He stared at my blade, and after a few moments of deep thinking, Richard took my sword. “Stand up,” he commanded me as he handed Heaven over to me. “This is a good sword; good hands made it. Make sure it’s used to do good for others so that I never have to regret this choice.” He put his hand on my shoulder and held my gaze. “Sir Lady Elleanora Lorien Blackrose Luna,” he said, loud enough for all to hear, “let mercy come to those who cross your path. Whether friends or foe, they both will be in trouble,” he said, chuckling.
I stood in the center of the room in awe of the happenings of the last few minutes. My life had taken a new direction where truth ruled. I was free at last! I didn’t remember who I was, but everyone around me seemed to know me, the true me, and they would not leave me in the dark. I will regain my true self! Until then, one thing is for certain. There are foes out there, seeking to destroy me and the King of the Everlands, and none of us will let them take us down. When they come, we’ll be ready!
