I pulled my foot free and lunged, my hands swiping at air in front of him. Not quite enough.
But before I could attend to the other bond, the shimmer came.
A rolling thunder that caused the whole room to shake.
Lady Jane flickered before me, her skin suddenly translucent, Fallon’s knife still imbedded in her back, piercing her quickly failing heart.
Bam!
Oh boy, the room burst into light, the wooden paneling ripping from the walls. The curtains flew off their stiff wooden rods, and the glass exploded out into the sunshine of day.
Then my foot broke free.
I roared my thanks as I readied myself to leap at the bastard, still standing in front of me.
But the shaking increased, taking my footing away.
I fell back against the Princess, then onto the floor.
My last images were the Princess standing over me, her legs slightly apart, her crevice mere inches from my face. The bedding, swirling round the room like in some huge washer-dryer, the glass pieces dancing around me like the pieces of glitter in a snow globe.
The dying look on my Lady Jane’s face. The sneer on Fallon’s lips. Then blackness.

I woke lying on a tree-covered hillside. Naked.
Sticks and rocks vied for best position to stick into my pained flesh.
Initially, as I lay on the ground, I only saw darkness all around me.
Slowly I stood. And to my complete dismay, I witnessed the town below.
Electric lights, the low-pitched peals of diesel trains, the obligatory police siren.
There seemed no point in crying out; I’d lost her. I’d lost them both.
Tears streamed down my face, blurring the landscape again.
“Fuck it.”
So thus finishes the first volume of the Connecticut Vampire series.
