Maria smiled at her mother-in-law. “Are the tacos good?”
Adam shook his head. “What is with the taco obsession?”
“Hey! I’m a full-blooded Latina. I’m allowed to be obsessed with tacos!”
“Okay, I’ll give you that one.”
Frank and Lani walked over, Lani waving happily to the others. “Brittany, I just finished reading your latest book. When is the next one coming out?”
Brittany smiled happily. She loved that people were reading her books, and what’s more, that they were liking them! It was still a little hard for her to believe that people enjoyed stories that she made up in her head. Yes, they were based a little on actual life, but mostly they were pure fiction. “Soon. I just got the cover this morning.”
“Ooo! Can I see?” Lani hurried over beside Brittany to peer at her cover on her phone. “I love it!”
“Me too!” Brittany tucked her phone back into her pocket. “We should go see Natalie over in her booth. I hate that she’s sitting there selling her candy, while we’re walking around having fun!”
“Natalie doesn’t mind at all. You know that!” Tiffani said, walking over with the others. They were like a giant gang of people walking, several of them pregnant. Brittany couldn’t help but wonder what people thought of them. Not that it would change how she acted in any way, but understanding what people thought, and their motivations, helped her write.
“There’s my favorite candy girl!” Ephraim said, walking over to Caleb and Natalie in their booth. Natalie seemed to be enjoying selling the candy, but Caleb seemed to be just eating it.
Claire walked around the corner of the booth, hand-in-hand with Daniel. “Gang’s all here, I see!”
“Where else would we be?” Maria asked. “We’re all so excited about this fundraiser.”
Claire looked at Brittany. “Why aren’t you signing books today? You should have a booth as well!”
“I’m afraid people would connect Clan McClean in with the McClains. I have way too much paranormal stuff in my books for anyone to link it. Wouldn’t be good.”
“That makes a lot of sense,” Lillian said. “But I have to say, I love reading every one of them!”
“I don’t think you could love reading them half as much as I love writing them!”
“Obviously we’re a good team then.” Lillian looked all around at the fundraiser. “I think this is our best turn-out yet! Great job, Tiffani.”
Tiffani blew on her knuckles before scrubbing them on her shirt. “What can I say? I’m good at what I do!”
“You look like you’re about to burst!” Lillian said. “How much longer until I have those granddaughters?”
Tiffani shrugged. “I don’t know. Another three or four weeks probably. I’m sure they’re ready to be spoiled by you.”
“Spoil? I’m just going to love them with every fiber of my being!”
All seven of the daughters-in-law spoke in unison. “Spoil!”
Lillian laughed. “I can’t fight this mob! Peter!”
Peter walked over to her. “Yes?”
“They’re accusing me of planning to spoil my grandbabies. You know I’d never do that!”
“Yes, dear. You won’t spoil them while you’re rottening them at all.”
They all laughed, and Gideon pulled Brittany closer. This was what he’d dreamed of his entire life. Being with the woman he loved and seeing the ranch prosper. If he’d been offered three wishes, he’d have to turn them down. He already had everything he wanted and needed right there.
