Book Seven: Carson
Book Eight: Texas
In the Last Chapter of Spider#6
Slammer looked over at Ivy.
She smiled. “I agree with that prescription. Treasure hunting is exciting and all, but...”
“But what?” He raised a brow at her.
“I’d like to spend some time teaching you how to sign.”
He looked puzzled. “Why do I need to learn that?”
“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe you could learn a few things about speaking with those wonderful, big hands of yours?”
Slammer stood and picked her up as he chuckled. “My fists usually do all the talking I need.”
Laughing with him, she gasped as he swung her around and headed for his room.
“These hands will be teaching you a few things now,” Slammer growled to her ear.
Just then, Texas rushed in from the hall while almost running into his prez and Ivy. “Shit!” he exclaimed.
Slammer stared at him with a scowl and set his woman down. “Dammit Texas. What the hell is it now?”
Texas swallowed heavily then spoke, “You ain’t gonna like this boss.”
Slammer snorted. “Do I ever? I mean if you ever had something good to fucking report, it would be a god dammed miracle.”
“Well, we got company,” Texas told him.
Slammer glared at him.
Who is it this time?”
Texas looked spooked. “The Triad?”
Slammer scowled at him. “Tommy Fang?”
Nodding, Texas bit at his lip. “And not just him. It looks like the whole fucking Triad is here. It’s—it fucking looks like the Chinese army out there!”
Slammer let out a frustrated breath and ordered, “Get Shotgun and Grinder out here. NOW.”
Texas nodded and went down the hall, banging on the doors.
Chapter One
Mammoth and Zoe joined them before Slammer and the others went outside.
Mammoth looked over at his Prez. “Zoe thinks they’re here to pick up the Holy Man’s button. They need to have that to pass down to the next holy man before the sun rises tomorrow morning.”
Slammer nodded. “That’s probably why they’re here.”
“So boss, are you gonna tell them about the gold?” Grinder asked.
“I don’t have a choice,” Slammer admitted. “One thing you don’t do is omit information like that from Tommy Fang. He will turn it around on you and damn you for it.” He looked at his men. “Besides, that isn’t our gold to keep if it’s still here.”
Carson stood in the corner looking out the shuttered window while keeping an ear on the conversation. Anything to do with the Triad made him nervous. You never knew from one moment to the next what they were going to do.
Then he got a sixth sense about something and his radar began to tingle. Looking down at Remmy, he noticed the dog was on alert. Something in the room wasn’t right. Slowly, he turned his head and caught Audrey ducking back into the kitchen. He frowned. It was normal for her to do that but there something seemed off about how she seemed so fearful.
Today it seemed like she was sneaking around and this made Carson wonder why she would be acting that way. Granted, the woman didn’t say a whole lot to anyone, she kept her nose down and did her job and not much else, that was true, so why today of all days was she acting like she was sneaking around?
Slammer retrieved the golden button and together he, Shotgun and Grinder began walking toward the front gate.
Carson followed quietly. He was here to help the club and so he didn’t know what else to do but to trail them. Give them cover with his rifle if he had to.
As they approached, Carson could see the ceremonial robes the head council was wearing. That told him the Triad were still in mourning for their holy man. Yes, he knew about the Chinese here in Frisco
No one on the Triad side of the gate moved as the trio came forward. Out of respect, Slammer and the others bowed to Tommy Fang and the head Council. Tommy and the others bowed back.
“We are here to collect the golden button you hold for us.” Tommy stated plainly.
“And we are happy to return it to you,” Slammer replied. “As long as you understand we did not take it from your holy man. We merely kept it safe until it could be returned.”
Tommy nodded. “We understand that. We have not caught the man responsible yet, but we will not stop until he pays for what he did.”
Slammer nodded but didn’t say anything, instead he held out the button on the flat of his hand.
Tommy reached through the bent and broken bars of the gate and reverently took the button then handed it back to the high priest. He bowed to Slammer and was turning to leave.
Slammer’s voice stopped him. “Could I have another moment of your time? Something else has come to our attention that you must be made aware of.”
“Can this other matter not wait?” Tommy demanded.
“I would rather it didn’t.” Slammer raised a brow at him. “It concerns a great deal of gold stamped with the sign of the dragon.”
Tommy froze, as did the entire council.
All the men there looked as if they’d gotten punched in the stomach.
“How do you know of such gold?”
“Indeed, that gold was lost many decades ago,” one of the priests said.
“We have found evidence the gold may be buried here on this land, waiting to be found. It could even be part of the pirate’s treasure our enemies were after,” Slammer explained.
Tommy glared at him. “And if you do find this gold, what are your intentions concerning the pirate’s treasure?”
Slammer bowed his head. “We will return it to its rightful owners of course. This is not our gold to keep. It belongs to the Triad.”
“Why do you tell me about this treasure? Now of all time?” Tommy wanted to know.
“Because you and me, we aren’t so different,” Slammer replied. “We are men of honor. We may be harsh men when honor serves us to be but still honor is in our heart, for without honor we are not real men. This man who murdered your holy man is not a real man. He would take what was not his to take, and he kills without provocation. That is not the act of an honorable man. I tell you this because it is the right thing to do and also to right a wrong done in the past.” He shrugged. “I had no reason to think this treasure was real but lately, I have seen the evidence that it is indeed real and still waiting to be discovered. The gold, if it is here, will be returned to you because it bears the symbol of your people, of the flying dragon. What we need to know is if you will accept it?”
Tommy stared at the men for a moment then looked at his Priests and Council members.
One of them stepped forward and bowed to Slammer.
Slammer bowed back and waited until the priest asked his question.
“Is this the dowry of the Empress that was lost so long ago?”
“From what we have understood, it is.”
“And this is part of the treasure Anaconda and Venom were wanting to claim as their own?” Tommy growled.
“It is.” Slammer acknowledged.
“And the rest of this pirate’s treasure? What will become of that?” Tommy asked.
“Again, it doesn’t belong to us, so it will probably be left where it is. We do have one of the pirate’s descendants living here but I’m not sure if she will claim it or not.”
“If you will not claim the rest of the treasure then why return only part of it?” Tommy stared at him.
“You and your faction are part of this city’s history. People come and go from here all the time but the Chinese Triad has a home here. You are part of this great city’s history and everyone knows this. They respect this as well. The Triad will be here longer than you and I. This gold belongs to your faction, not mine and I return it to you because it’s the right thing to do. We will not keep what is not ours to keep.”
“We will return for the gold.” Tommy finally seemed to relax. “Our ceremony ends at midnight when the new Holy Man will be given his duties. Until then, we will leave our soldiers to keep this a safe place from your enemies. If I may, I would like to study this evidence you say you have. As you can imagine, we have been looking for this stolen gold for several lifetimes and now to have it within our grasp is a joyous occasion for us.” Tommy nodded.
Slammer nodded. “We will share all we know with you and your council.”
Carson listened then he saw the men turn and leave. He crept back into the House.
When he saw that Audrey hadn’t returned to the main room, he went to find her.
She was standing in her room peeking out the window without standing in front of the window.
Again, she seemed to be hiding and Carson was wondering why. “Are you okay?” he asked her quietly.
Audrey screamed and twirled around to face whoever was behind her.
Carson’s eyes widened at the sight of the blade in her hand. He slowly held his hands out at his side and took a step back.
Remmy stepped forward and put himself between the two of them.
“Oh my god, you scared me,” Audrey whispered and held her free hand to the middle of her chest. “Don’t you know better than to sneak up on someone like that?”
Carson cocked his head to one side. “I didn’t know I was sneaking up on you. I just entered your room.”
&
nbsp; Audrey looked down at her hand and saw the blade still held tight. She dropped it on the floor and wrapped her arms around her shoulders. She turned around and looked out the window again, at the crowd out beyond the cement wall.
Carson stepped forward and looked out the window to see what had this normally timid woman so afraid. He saw many members of the Triad and several businessmen on the edge of the crowd. These businessmen worked with the Triad and were here to support them in their transition.
Audrey was staring at one of them as if he were the devil incarnate.
Carson watched him for a moment then asked, “Who is he?”
Audrey shrank into herself and tucked her body into the corner just beyond the window frame. “I don’t want to talk about him. He’s too close to finding me again. I have to get away from here before he sees me.”
Carson frowned at her words. Looking back out the window, he found the other man looking back. He couldn’t possibly see anything from where he was standing but Carson saw the man was frowning as he stared at the clubhouse.
The man was tall... around six foot two. He had dark hair and a cruel look about him. He wore a black eye patch and had a permanent frown on his face. He was a little on the slender side and his hands were wrapped into fists. He didn’t look like a patient man.
“Who is he?” Carson asked again. When he turned to look at her, he frowned.
Audrey was tucked in the corner shaking, her eyes were glazed over, and she was crouched as if she were expecting a blow to come her way.
He moved over to where she was crouching and tried to reach out to her but she shied away from his touch. He stopped and told her, “Honey I can’t help you if I don’t know what’s going on.”
Audrey looked up at him with tears dripping down her face. Shaking her head she told him, “You can’t help me, no one can. His family is too powerful. They will crush anyone who helps me get away. He and his father use people, then they crush them. If he is with the Triad, he’s about to set them up for something very bad.”
