In Good Hands (Protect and Serve Book 2) Page 4

by Nadine Hudson

What the hell is wrong with you?

“Veronica?” I ignored Finn’s voice as I walked briskly towards the elevator.

I sent a quick message to Beth that I was going up to the room while Finn continued to yell my name.

  “Veronica!”

A hand wrapped around my elbow, and I was pulled behind a large potted plant. I pulled my arm away from Finn, but he quickly placed his hand against the wall, trapping me. I didn’t want to speak to him, not after what had happened with Brant. I felt vulnerable and on the brink of crying, but I’d be damned if I would cry around Finn.

“I’m fine, Finn, so can you move?”

“Talk to me. What did he do?”

  I froze. “What?”

His jaw clenched as he gazed down at me, his eyes bright with anger. “You said you’d bring your boyfriend. He’s not here, and you look unhappy. What did he do?”

“He didn’t do anything,” I grumbled and tried to walk away once more. Finn stepped forward, pinning me against the wall with no way of escaping.

“I’ll ask you one more time, V, did he hurt you?”

  “Why do you care?”

I hadn’t meant to say those words with so much venom, but Finn didn’t seem to mind. I pressed my fingers to my eyes as I hung my head. Each time I pictured Brant’s face, I wanted to punch something. I just felt like a fool.

He leaned back somewhat and exhaled heavily, his breath fanning my face. “I just do, okay. That’s all.”

His features softened as he reached out and touched a strand of my hair. My body reacted immediately, growing tense but from the anticipation of him touching me further.

“Well, you don’t need to worry about me. I’m a big girl, Finn. I can take care of myself.”

Those words were my undoing. Tears rimmed my eyes and blurred my vision, and Finn’s hands fell to his sides. I blinked rapidly, begging my tears to listen to me and not overflow.

“Shit,” he breathed out heavily. “Don’t do that, V, please.”

“I’m not doing anything!” I said as I pulled myself together.

Being so close to him, smelling his scent, and seeing how he looked at me quickly weakened my resolve. I wanted nothing more than to throw my arms around him, to fall against the warmth of his body and remain there.

As he started laughing, I froze, the sound like music to my ears. Still, I sent my fiercest glare his way. “What’s so funny?”

“You are. I prefer you being angry at me than what you were about to do,” Finn wiped his fingers under my watery eyes, and my soul melted. “Whatever he did, forget it and forget him, Veronica. He’s not worth your tears. You’re out of his league.”

I snorted embarrassingly as I laughed, and so did he. Finn turned serious again when added, “It’s true. He wasn’t what you needed.”

My face fell as the space between us grew hot. He was looking down at me with so much hunger, I was unable to look away. His grey eyes darkened with need, and I pressed myself against the wall as he stepped forward. My body was vibrating with anticipation, and it hummed happily when he reached out and brushed his knuckles against my jaw.

“What do I need then?” I whispered.

He crushed his lips to mine and the build-up of need I’d been holding for weeks spilled over. I threw my arms over his shoulders, and he pressed his body to mine. He was hard where he should be and soft where he should be, and I felt like I was being transported somewhere.

His tongue slipped into my mouth, the taste of champagne sending me over the edge. He pulled away, breaking our kiss, but his hands gripped my waist to keep me against him.

Before I could speak, his lips were on mine again, this time with an uncensored need that I matched with my own. Finn kissed away all thoughts of Brant, along with my memory of where we were.

He placed his forehead against mine as our lips slowly pulled away from each other, and I shook my head, my heart beating so loudly in my ear that I wondered if he could hear it.

“Don’t walk away this time,” I pleaded softly.

My eyes slowly opened to gaze into his. He cupped my cheek and ran a thumb across my lips, sending a bolt of electricity rolling down my spine.

My body belonged to this man. There was no fighting it.

“I won’t,” he answered. “Not tonight.”

I slipped the room key from my small purse. We shared a knowing look, a silent agreement passing between us. This was what we’ve both been wanting. He took my hand, kissed the back of it, and we walked to the elevator together.

I kept my mind focused on how good his lips had just felt against mine, on how good his kiss might feel elsewhere on my body. I didn’t want to get trapped in my mind and overthink the decision I’d just made. I liked Finn, and tonight—maybe only for tonight—I’d forget about the consequences. I’d have him, and he’d have me.

For tonight, I’d think of nothing and simply live.

  About the Author

Nadine is a sloppy romantic at heart. She loves to curl up on her front porch swing in the mornings with her extra large cup of coffee and lose herself in a blissfully, butterfly-filled, pure romance story. However, her guilty pleasures are found within the pages of the steamy romances with sexy alpha’s that ignite temptation, desire, and lust.

As much as she enjoys reading romances, she enjoys writing them even more. She thrives on the opportunity to give her readers the chance to escape into the chiseled arms of their latest book boyfriend and leave them fantasizing days later.

She has been punching keys for years and now that she has built up a collection of heartthrobs, she is ready to finally share them with the world.
