Texas Bride Page 32

by Leigh Greenwood

  "Get up."

"Not until you say you'll marry me. I'll lie on the floor until Ida comes home."

Hetta laughed. "I'll marry you on one condition."

"What is that?" He didn't like conditions. Sooner or later they caused trouble.

"You're never to tell me I'm beautiful."

  "Never?"

"Well, at least not for twenty or thirty years."

"I can't make that promise," Owen said, "but there is one I will make." He took Hetta's hands and pressed them against his cheeks. "I may not tell you you're beautiful, but I promise to make you feel beautiful."

It took several kisses to seal their promises. When they'd finally leaned back against the sofa, still holding hands, Hetta asked, "When do you think we ought to get married?"

  "Tonight."

Hetta laughed. "We can't do it that quickly."

  "Then how about tomorrow?"

"I think the day after would be better."

"I don't think I can wait that long."

"I have to have time to find a dress."

"Wear the one you wore to the dance."

"I can't get married in a red dress!"

  "Why not?"

Hetta sighed happily. "I'm glad there's at least one thing you don't understand about women. No man should know everything."
