Mission to the Moon Page 23

by Mark Cheverton

“He wanted everyone to know what kind of hero Gameknight999 was … is. That’s why he put it in the book,” Crafter explained. “You can’t blame him, Weaver was your biggest fan.”

  “I know, but …”

Suddenly, words scrolled through his head. SON, IT’S TIME FOR DINNER. TELL YOUR FRIENDS GOODBYE. It was his father texting to him through Minecraft.

“I know that look,” Hunter said, her chocolate brown eyes now filled with sadness. “You have to go, don’t you?”

  He nodded.

“When will you come back?” Stitcher asked.

“I don’t know; my dad has been telling me to use the Digitizer less. He’s afraid there may be some health risks to using it a lot. I think he’ll shut me down for a while, but don’t worry. Nothing will keep me out of Minecraft forever.”

Hunter smiled, then punched him in the arm.

“Ouch, what was that for?” Gameknight asked, rubbing his shoulder.

“Just so you won’t forget about me.”

“Hunter, I could never forget about any of you. You’re my family, and when I …”

Suddenly, a bright ball of light enveloped him. Gameknight shut his eyes, trying to block the brilliant illumination, but it seemed to come from inside him. Waves of heat and chilling cold washed over him as his nerves seemed to ignite, electrifying his entire body. The light grew brighter and brighter until …

Tommy woke again, the puddle of drool not as large this time. He sat up and found his father standing behind him, shutting down the Digitizer. He shook his head, trying to dislodge the ache that always resided there after using his dad’s invention.

  “You okay?” his father asked.

  Tommy nodded and smiled.

“Everything is okay now, I think.”

“Good,” his dad replied. “I think you’ve been spending a little too much time inside Minecraft recently.”

“Awww … Daaaad.” Tommy stood, knowing what was coming. “But Minecraft is so …”

His father raised a hand, silencing the prepared complaint; they’d had this discussion many times, and they both knew the script.

“I know you love Minecraft, so I got you something you could do that’s still Minecrafty, but you won’t be locked away down here in the basement.”

He pulled out a book and handed it to his son. Gameknight read the title aloud:

  “Zombies Attack!”

The cover had a picture of an NPC about to fire an enchanted bow and arrow. In the background, he saw the faint image what appeared like a terrifying zombie.

“This looks interesting,” he said as he took the book from his father’s hand.

“Maybe you could do a little reading … and maybe even some writing,” his dad said. “I was thinking—you should write down these adventures you’ve been having, and maybe get them published.”

“You think I could?” Tommy asked, a flare of excitement in his eyes.

“Why not? You could write them, and I could do the editing. I’ll put your name in the book as the Technical Consultant. And when it’s time to self-publish them, we’d have to do it under my name. You know how careful I always want you to be when it comes to disclosing personal information on the Internet.”

“Yessss … Daaaad,” Tommy moaned; that was his only line in that dialogue.

He inspected the book closely, then headed for the stairs.

“I think I’m gonna read this book first … it looks cool. Then I’ll start writing out my adventures. Who knows—it might be cool to be an author.”

“I wouldn’t know anything about that,” his father replied.

“I’m gonna read a little before dinner,” Tommy said as he ran up the stairs. “Hope that’s okay!”

Before leaving the basement, he glanced back at the Digitizer and thought about all the adventures he’d had through that machine, from meeting Crafter for the first time, to meeting all his other friends, to even going into outer space.

“What a ride it’s been,” he said softly. “I can’t wait to start writing. But first, I’ll do some reading.”

He bolted out of the basement and headed for the sofa, the new book held firmly in his hands, ready to begin a new adventure.

  MINECRAFT SEEDS

I hope you enjoyed our adventures in outer space with the Galacticraft mod. You also saw some of the Thaumcraft mod at the end of the story on planet Fronos. Both of these mods are incredible and can be downloaded to your Minecraft.

As I explained in the last couple of books, adding mods to Minecraft and getting them to work correctly has always been a challenge for me. Instead, I’ve learned to use Feed-The-Beast or my now-favorite, the Curse Client.

To load Thaumcraft, I found it easier to either download Feed-the-Beast, https://www.feed-the-beast.com/, and then use the DireWolf20 modpack, which worked really well on my Macbook (be sure to get your parent’s permission), but you can also download the Curse Twitch Client, https://mods.curse.com/client, which is another way to run modded Minecraft. Here is a video with DireWolf20 showing how to use the newer Curse Client: https://youtu.be/lf2y1D8wMdU. Be aware, running modded Minecraft takes a lot of resources on your computer. On my PC, I can’t run either the Curse Client or Feed-the-Beast, because it just gets too laggy—my PC is too old. So you may also run into issues if you try these. Please be sure to ask your parent’s permission before downloading anything.

It is important to note: Galacticraft is not part of the DireWolf20 Modpack, but if you search for it in Curse Client, you’ll find it in the Interplanetary Tech mudpack or the Space Astronomy mudpack. Both work really well and have the More Planets add-on, so you’ll get the additional solar systems that enable you to reach Fronos and the delicious Candy Land.

Sadly, I still don’t have any Minecraft seeds for you, because you need to use the mod to see the different planets. If you don’t have Galacticraft, you can see numerous videos on YouTube, with your parent’s permission. Here are some of my favorites:

  THE RISE OF THE WARLORDS

  AN UNOFFICIAL INTERACTIVE MINECRAFTER’S ADVENTURE

I’m very excited about this next series, The Rise of the Warlords. The first book in the series is called Zombies Attack! (it’s the same book Tommy’s dad gave him at the end of this one!) As you have probably already guessed, I’m using some new characters in this series. I’ve been thinking about them for a long time, and have written some short stories about them. You can find Battle with the Wither King here: http://gameknight999.com/downloads/. These characters, like Watcher and Blaster and Planter, will bring something new and unique to my stories, and I’m really excited to have you meet them. Watcher, like some of the characters you already know, is incredible with a bow, but his eyesight is something unique and special. Planter has a great sense of compassion and a peaceful nature; I already want to hang out with her. But be careful, she can fight with her enchanted blade, named Needle, and doesn’t understand the word quit. And I think Blaster will be a favorite. As you can imagine, Blaster really likes blowing things up, but he’s also a great fighter with his two curved knives. I think you’re gonna love these people … I know I already do.

The series is set in the Far Lands. For those you who h
ave been playing Minecraft for a long time, you might remember the Far Lands in some of the earlier versions of the game. Maybe you were even caught in a glitch out there, finding missing chunks of land, having mountains disappear, or seeing rivers flowing to nowhere. Strange things have been known to happen there, and I thought that setting would be perfect for this new series.

Not only are there monsters galore to see in the Far Lands, I’ll also be telling you about the history of this landscape. There will be some new and terribly evil villains, but also a whole new set of histories to go along with the game, like the stories of the Council of Wizards and the dreaded Warlocks. The myths about these ancient creatures will be sprinkled throughout these books. You’ll learn about the great war that happened hundreds of years ago in the Far Lands between the Wizards and the Warlocks, see some of the epic structures, and find some ancient, enchanted relics, like Needle. But, more importantly, you’ll see how Watcher and his friends will use the ancient relics to battle the Zombie Warlord, Tu-Kar, and his horde of monsters.

In addition to a new cast, we’re trying something never before attempted with Minecraft and literature: an interactive novel that links an adventure in a book with gameplay on a Minecraft server. For the first time ever, you’ll be able to read my book, then go onto the Gameknight999 Minecraft server, and play through the adventure in a custom-built adventure game.

Yes, that’s right, you’ll be able to explore the ancient structures, try to defeat the traps laid by your adversary, and face the monsters that Watcher and his friends will battle. Test your skill at parkour as you try to reach the top of the old church. Face the zombie general, Ro-Zar, in combat in that church—if, that is, you can survive the waves of zombies and skeletons that’ll try to stop you.

Face the zombie warlord, himself, Tu-Kar, if you dare, then go to the Capitol and challenge the scariest monster of them all, Kaza. As you battle these creatures, you’ll be following the storyline from the book, and seeing the fantastic structures built by the famous building team: Quadbamber (Joseph Bamber), Mr_man12 (Will Shephert), Arp97 (Adam Pugh), and Benma98 (Ben Archer). Their creations are epic; I only hope I can describe them well enough in the book so you can see them in your mind. You can see the capital above, but I’m really looking forward to seeing the Zombie Fortress, which is just being started as I’m writing this.
