The elation was palpable, and yet Sam could do nothing but stand still, leaning back against his locker as he stared at the spot where Drew had stood just moments before. His heart was pounding. It felt like a freight train in his chest, thundering in his ribcage, and it was so loud he was almost certain everyone else could hear it too.
But no one seemed to react to it or to him, not in any way which seemed unusual at least, so he let himself relax. Still, he was on edge, unsure as to what exactly had happened and what had passed between him and Drew as they had their little stand-off. What was he supposed to do now? Go out on the field and play like nothing had happened? It was the intelligent answer, and he knew it was the right one, but what would he do once practice was over? Would he be able to go about his life like nothing had happened, like nothing had changed?
Something had changed within him. It felt like his soul had been set on fire. A minute with Drew and Sam’s world seemed vibrant, colorful, full of opportunity. He was a young man approaching the prime of his life, new feelings awakening inside of him, new experiences taking root in his mind. The room wasn’t really spinning.
There weren’t actual bubbles and a glittering pink haze coloring the room. And yet, he seemed to perceive it all that way. The world was his shining moon, and it was casting its rays over him. He could finally smile because through everything, his condition, his curse, his secret, he’d made it out alive. He made it to this point in his life where he was so close to being free. And he would be, free that is. Completely. He just knew it.
