“Ow.” I hop around the room clasping my foot.

“Those books been bothering you?” I jump at the voice and turn to find Luca standing in the doorway, a tentative grin on his face. I resist the urge to grin back.

“What are you doing here?” I ask.

His expression turns serious. “I wanted to apologize.”

“You already did that,” I say, folding my arms.

He pulls a bunch of tulips from behind his back. They’re beautiful, deep red and purple, but I keep the scowl on my face. “You can’t win me over with a bunch of flowers.”

“I know,” he says. “The flowers are a peace offering. Let me buy you dinner, and I can explain.”

“There’s nothing to explain. You’re an undercover cop. It’s your job to lie.” He winces, and I feel a bit bad. It’s an unfair thing to say.

“I know you feel let down,” he says, “but I couldn’t tell you who I really was. It would have put you in danger. You must see that.”

  I nod. “I get it.”

“What I’d like to do is take you out to dinner and start again.” His eyes are pleading with me, and I feel my heart soften just a little bit. “I know you’re not working tonight, so how about it?”

Then I remember the other reason I’m pissed off at him, and my scowl returns.

“No. Thanks to you, I’m not working tonight because I don’t have a job or a place to live.”

He looks around my room and seems to take it in for the first time. The packed bags, the empty clothes rail.

“I’m so sorry, Bailey. Do you have somewhere you can go?”

“Yeah. Nine hours on a Greyhound bus back to my parents’ place.”

His face falls. “But how about your studies?”

I look down at my stack of useless study books. “I’m dropping out,” I mumble.

  “You can’t do that.”

“It’s the only thing I can do.”

He puts the flowers down on the table a little too forcefully. “No. I won’t let you. You’ve worked too hard for this.”

I sigh. “I was failing anyway.”

  “What?”

I pull the crumpled-up letter from where I kicked it under the bed and show him. “So there really is no point in sticking around. It was a stupid idea of mine, to think a girl like me from a family like mine could ever be a lawyer.”

  “Don’t say that.”

“It’s true. It was a stupid dream, and I don’t know why I thought it would work.”

He puts his hands on my shoulders. They’re warm and comforting. “Stop saying that. You’re a smart woman. You can do anything you set your mind to.”

I give a hollow laugh. “No. I tried, and I failed.”

He puts a finger under my chin and tilts my head up, so I’m forced to look at him. “Hey, I believe in you.” The words send a shiver right down to my gut and a part of me opens up, like maybe I could do this after all. “You’re only failing because you’ve had to work while you study. I know you’re smart enough. You just need the time and the space to concentrate.”

“Yeah, well how am I going to find that now?”

His eyes scan mine, and he takes a moment before answering. “Don’t freak out, but I’ve got a spare room at my place.”

“You want me to move in with you?” I say skeptically.

“You can stay rent free while you study.”

“Rent free? Why would you do that for me?”

His eyes scan mine. “If you don’t know the answer to that, then you’re not as smart as I thought.”

He’s so close I can feel his breath on my lips. My heart races as he closes the distance, his lips crashing into mine. I close my eyes, and for a moment there’s nothing else in the world apart from this sweet, sweet kiss.

I open my eyes as he pulls away.

“Bailey, I’ve been crazy about you ever since you almost broke my nose at the bar.”

I give a snort laugh. “Yeah, sorry about that.”

His lips move down to my neck, and it feels so deliciously good. But I hesitate. I’ve still not forgiven him for the lies.

He senses my hesitation and pulls back. “Give me another chance, Bailey, and I promise I’ll make it up to you.”

“Do you promise you’ll never lie to me again?”

He hesitates. “I’m a detective. Sometimes I’ll be working on cases I won’t be able to talk about. I’ll never lie to you, but I might not be able to tell you everything.”

I think about it for a moment. “I appreciate your honesty.” I nod. “I’ll give you a chance, but we take it slow.” He grins. “And just because I’m moving into your spare room doesn’t mean I’m moving into your bed.”

  “Spoken like a true lawyer.”

I don’t tell him that my lady bits are on fire, and I don’t know how long I’ll be able to resist him.

“Does this mean you’re not dropping out of college?”

I nod. “Yeah. So can you give me a hand carrying these books downstairs?”

“Sure thing. But first I’m going to kiss you again. And I will take you out to dinner tonight.”

  “Are you teaching me negotiation?”

He gins, and I find myself grinning too. “No, my dear. I’m teaching you how to love.”

Before I can say anything else, his lips find mine, and once again I’m lost in the depths on the sweetest, slowest, most delicious of kisses.

  Epilogue 1

  Luca

  Two weeks later…

The smell of roasting chicken hits me as I open the front door. I drop my bag and follow my nose into the kitchen.

The oven is on and Bailey is sitting at the table, books spread in front of her.

  “Dinner smells good.”

She jumps in her chair, her hand on her chest. “You scared me.”

I laugh. “Didn’t you hear me come in?”

“No, I was too absorbed in the history of the criminal justice system.”

  “Sounds fascinating,” I say dryly.

“It is actually. I’m enjoying this unit.”

She runs a hand through her hair and it flicks down her back. Watching her, I feel my dick twitch in my pants.

It’s been two weeks she’s been living in my spare room, and I’m finding it harder and harder not to jump on her.

She works hard during the day studying, but most nights we sit up talking or cuddled together on the couch watching re-runs of Law and Order.

“How was your day?” she asks, getting up to check the chicken.

“Standard,” I say. “Spent most of it cramped in a car watching a suspect’s house.”

She scrunches up her nose but doesn’t ask me anything else. She’s getting used to the idea that I can’t always talk about my work.

It will be the same for her when she’s practicing law. At least we’ll understand each other.

She bends to open the oven, and I get a good view of her plump ass. My dick instantly hardens. She’s wearing a skirt that rides up past her knees when she bends over, and I can see the soft skin of her thighs.

“It’ll be another half hour or so,” she says, straightening up. “I’ve done roast potatoes too.”

She walks back over to her books and stops when she sees the look on my face.

“Bailey...” My voice comes out husky. I take her hand and press it against my hard dick. Her eyes go wide. Then her hand moves gently, stroking me against the fabric of my jeans, causing a tingly friction.

I wrap my hand in her hair and pull her toward me, my lips crashing into hers. She parts them for me, opening up in an urgent kiss.

We’ve kissed a few times over the last few weeks, but not like this, not with this kind of urgency, this passion.

I press my body against hers and she stumbles backwards, the backs of her thighs hitting the table. Her hands are pulling at my belt buckle with the same pressing need that I’m feeling.

I kiss her neck, moving my lips down her soft flesh as
my hand cups her heavy breast.

Her fingers work my fly loose. and she gasps as my hard cock releases from my jeans, standing to attention through the hole in my boxer shorts. Her hand clasp my girth, and I groan at the warm feeling as she moves them slowly from my base to my tip. Her touch is driving me wild, and suddenly I have to have her.

I lean past her, and with one swift movement clear the stack of books from the table. They go skittering across the table, and one falls to the floor. She gasps as I lift her by the hips and sit her on the table. My hand slides under her skirt and pushes her legs apart. She lets me in and I fit perfectly between her legs, my hard dick pushing against the damp fabric of her panties.

“I want you,” I moan as my dick slides over the wet cotton.

“Then take me,” she whispers into my ear.

The warm tickle of her breath sends shock waves through me. I hook her panties with my thumbs and pull them down over her legs.

Now there’s nothing between us and my dick rests for a moment, pushing at the entrance to her dark cave. Its warm stickiness is full of promise.

“We should use a condom,” I say.

She shakes her head. “I want you now. I want all of you.” She opens her legs wider, and I feel her opening part for me. Her hands go around my back and grab my ass, and as I thrust she pulls me toward her.

I thrust into her wet pussy, and it’s so tight and sticky. We cry out together as our bodies become one.

I slide out and she pulls me toward her again, her legs wrapping around my waist. My hands slide under her ass, and I’m half lifting her as I thrust in and out of her warm pussy.

Her skirt is pulled up, and it feels dirty and urgent as I fulfill this animal need I have for her, fucking her hard and fast on the table. She clings onto me, her need as great as mine, her head tilted back, crying out with every thrust.

I can feel my orgasm building with every sound she makes, her pleasure increasing mine. Suddenly the note of her cries changes, and I feel her pussy grip mine. It sends me over the edge and I explode in ecstasy, shooting cum deep inside her.

I pump her a few more times, getting every last bit of my seed inside her. In that moment I know with all of my being that this is the woman I want to be the mother of my children. We fit together, and I’m never letting her go.

  Epilogue 2

  Bailey

  Four years later…

I wait nervously at the side of the stage. Sweat pools under my hat, and my gown feels tight and sticky. It was hard finding one that would fit over my pregnant belly.

They call my name, and I waddle onto the stage. Even though it’s hot, I’m thirsty, and I’m dying for a pee, I’ve still got the biggest grin on my face.

It’s taken me five years to get here, but I’m finally graduating with a degree in law.

I’ve already accepted a job offer, provided I pass the bar exam, and they’re happy to wait until after the baby is born. Even better, they have a flexible working policy and a creche in the building. I’ll be able to do the job I love while being a mother.

I shake the dean’s hand as I take my certificate. As I pose for a photo, I scan the audience. Luca is in the front row clapping and cheering the loudest.

He’s always been my biggest supporter, and I can honestly say I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for his encouragement.

I waddle offstage, and one of the faculty jumps up to help me down the stairs.

“Thank you,” I say, as I walk over to join the rest of my fellow graduates.

There’s a party happening later, but I won’t attend. Already I’m looking forward to the special dinner Luca’s booked and then crashing on the couch with him. If I ask nicely, he may even rub my swollen feet.

We were married a year after we met. We were going to wait to start a family until after I graduated, but nature had different plans. We never were good at contraception.

As I clap for the other graduates, I look over at Luca. He catches my eye and mouths, “I love you.”

“I love you too,” I mouth back, rubbing my belly.

I have my man, my degree, and a baby on the way. The hard work has paid off, and now my heart soars at the future ahead of me. Life couldn’t be better.
