She squeezed my hands back. "You're not going to lose me, Terry. Never."
"I know that now."
"I'll kill John if he hurts you again," she said in a voice that was unlike her. "Promise me again you'll let me be there for you from now on."
I gave her that promise. What else could I do? She was my best friend and I was done hiding.
"So you're not afraid of Skull anymore?" I asked, cupping a handful of saltwater and hurling it at her.
Hannah retaliated by flicking sand my way. "Nah. I was just afraid of his size. You know big people scare me. He's cool." She paused, then said, "I'm so happy that you and John have reconciled now."
I smiled.
Huge.
"Thank you," I replied cheerfully. "But if I hear you betting on me with Skull again, I'll kill you."
"What the hell, Skull?" John was shouting and I looked at him over my shoulder. "I wasn't even gone 10 minutes but you've already burned half the steaks!"
"He's really lucky to have you," Hannah whispered to me. "Because I don't think anyone would have him."
I looked at the rings on my fingers and smiled again.
He was. But not as lucky as me.
I like you, Terry. And I want to be your friend.
We had been seven years old when he told me those words.
And who knew he'd be so much more.
Who knew he'd do so much for me.
He breathed life into me, he gave me the courage to be free.
He loved me even when I was at my bitchiest and loved me even when he knew I might be crazy like my mother. He was helping me make dreams. He was making them all come true and I knew.
I finally had the future I wanted.
I finally had my happily ever after.
John called my name and I looked at him. He was grinning, waving at me to join them and my heart felt like it was going to burst.
And it was happy.
End.
Thank you!
