Prologue
Deep in Apollo’s Island, Earth Realm—Millennia Ago
She took a steady breath and focused on the plan. It was all that kept her sane when the silver walls started closing in around her. They were so brightly polished she knew if she glanced up, she’d see her image staring back. Instead she kept her almond-shaped eyes slightly downcast, hiding any hint of emotion from the Deity who’d created her. All the while her internal clock screamed that if they didn’t act soon, she and her now silent twin would be trapped in Apollo’s grip forever.
Apollo’s cold crystal blue eyes assessed her as he would any prized creature while the sensation of insects crawling over her skin, under the flesh, continued to torment her. There was nothing hidden from his ability, not one heartbeat or breath that he couldn’t see. Only her mind stayed protected as she endured his darkness slithering over and through her body, the liquid warmth of power invading her chest and stomach. He was getting more dangerous as time passed, as the days approached the age of their majority. Every moment brought them closer to something, and a sickening feeling in the pit of her stomach told her they needed to find freedom before that day came.
She tried to avoid looking up at her sister, but she was anxious that her twin would do something reckless. She caught a glimpse of identical deep indigo eyes staring back. They were the same shade as hers but with more shadows. Long black hair flowed in waves down the front of the white gown and over one deep bronze shoulder. If they hadn’t had each other, they would have gone mad long ago. Maybe they had. Her sister’s twilight eyes shone with a hint of something wild and dangerous. She willed her twin to control it for just a little longer.
“Your powers are developing beautifully, pet.”
She glanced up to see Apollo’s self-satisfied smile as his eyes settled on hers. She forced back any emotion, controlling her body’s reaction to him. Keeping her heart rate even and her face passive. Giving no outward sign that she’d rather kill him than feel his fingers on her flesh or his power running under her skin.
“Thank you,” she whispered softly, glancing down at her folded hands, but it wasn’t over yet. She felt his power still working inside her, so she focused on the flimsy white silk of her dress. It was stark under the bronze of her seemingly delicate fingers. The golden cuffs at her wrists drew her attention and her hatred, but she kept her shoulders relaxed. The spelled gold was yet another shackle in her prison, the serpent’s scales flexing and flowing fluidly as they circled skin and bone. Apollo wouldn’t take a chance that the room itself wasn’t enough to hold them. The metal surrounding them dampened their ability, but he was right, it couldn’t fully contain them. She wasn’t sure how she knew that, but she did.
The cuffs were what prevented them from defying him, from lashing out physically. She would sever her own wrists to free herself of them, but regenerating the limbs would sap her energy and power. She’d be weakened for too long and likely recaptured well before gaining freedom. She and her twin had tested their self-hea
ling often as their power had grown, and it still wasn’t fast enough. She shook off those thoughts. The risk of taking that path had never been worth it. The God would have only made them pay for such an attempt. He’d learned long ago that separating them got him the obedience he demanded. Keeping them apart drove them insane, so he’d done it every time they’d displeased him, and he kept the threat hanging over them always. Obey him like good pets and he would allow them to stay together. Defy him and they would suffer.
She felt another wave of warmth in her chest, running slowly higher, nearly suffocating her as it tightened at her throat. His favorite way of reminding her that she was powerless against him.
They needed to get to the caves after this; if they didn’t feed their energy needs, they wouldn’t make it through another of the God’s visits. She felt a slight tremor in her fingers and forced it away. Soon. It should only be a little longer now. Once they were deep inside the cavern, they’d get the sustenance all Immortals needed to thrive. They were generally only permitted short trips, but it would have to be enough to get them through until they were free, enough to keep their emotions from betraying them.
The God’s fingers traced over her skin, feeling like serpents, his power the venom sliding inside, poisoning her with each interaction. She forced herself to still, curbing the urge to pull away. His sweet scent filtered in her lungs, repulsing her.
His thumb slid over her cheek, something that he was doing more often. She finally eased as his power slipped from her. Almost there.
“You’re proving even more powerful than I’d planned,” he mused, sliding his finger down to toy with her ebony hair, twining it in his fist as she glanced at her sister. She gave her twin a hard stare. She couldn’t risk any communication; all she could do was keep it together and hope her sibling did the same.
“You’re both such prized possessions.” His lips tilted in a pleased grin. Deceptively beautiful. Deadly.
She felt desperation clawing her stomach now. If only they could destroy him, but they weren’t strong enough.
Their only hope was escape.
“Arrangements will be made to bring you to the palace soon.” It felt as if time stood still. She could feel her sister holding onto a sharp intake of breath.
“If it pleases you.” She bowed her head, forcing her heart rate to remain steady. She scoured her mind for any sound reason to give that would stop that from happening, but nothing came.
A knock at the door echoed in the room as she forced her breathing to flow slowly, evenly.
“What is it?” Apollo’s deep voice bellowed, his displeasure at the interruption directed at whoever was on the other side.
“Hermes has entered the camps above,” the disembodied voice replied.
Apollo got up, his eyes narrowing at the door in obvious annoyance. She’d never seen the God’s brother, though they knew of him just as they knew the details about all of the Deities. She and her sister were Apollo’s secret; only select guards were used to keep them hidden. They were his grand weapons against the world. So why move them to the palace where they could be seen?
He stood up and strode to the door without another glance in their direction. The metal slid open and he exited right before she heard the deafening sound of the lock snicking into place. Her mind fixated on the noise, amplified it so it was all she heard other than the sound of his footsteps leaving the tunnel.
It’s time, her sister’s voice hissed in her mind. They refrained from mental communication anytime the God was near. They wouldn’t take the chance that he’d somehow detect it even though his main ability was with the body, not the mind. His power could squeeze and grind their organs until she wished for death, but so far he’d never been able to access their mental link.
I will take care of Notus, she answered, not pleased that her twin kept taking that burden to get them out.
No. The mental voice was harsh, final. He’s obsessed with me and you would not be able to take my place in this.
Yes, I could. They were identical. Bronze skin, blue eyes so dark they were nearly black. Ebony hair in long waves down their backs. She looked at her sister and saw the set of her jaw, the darkening of her eyes.
She got an oily feeling in her stomach when arguing about what her sister was doing with the guard. Her twin had been sheltering her from the worst of the acts, she knew it, and that fact only made her angrier.
The male, their main guard, had made his interest clear when they were but fifteen summers. Now, nearly five summers later, he was their only way out. Their only help, but the cost was hardening her sister to greater degrees with each encounter.
It was taking a different type of toll on her. Guilt that her twin refused to share the burden, but even now she could see just how unrelenting her twin’s gaze was, how furiously protective.
The plan has always been to alternate. She set her teeth, angry that every time she tried, her sister found a way to take the choice away from her.
Never. We are almost at the end. I will see it done.
Chapter 1
Earth Realm
The seductive throbbing of the music slid around Natasha as she slipped from her office, the door clicking shut and locking behind her. Instead of communicating through their mental link, she decided to go in search of her twin. Their bond was close, but each kept firm control of any emotions seeping through. It was something ingrained in their youth. That meant she had no idea what her sister was hiding, but Nastia had definitely been acting off for the past few months, the reason for Tasha’s casual check-in now.
The scents of arousal and alcohol competed with perfume and sweat as they siphoned to the exhaust fans above. As the night moved on, the arousal and pheromones would only get stronger as humans and Mageia, mortals with elemental powers, watched the shows and paid for entertainments in the private rooms.
She gave little attention to the avid interest from the patrons as she took the stairs down to the main floor. She slipped past David, a Mageia whose job was making sure no one attempted to access her private space. She nodded to the male, getting a polite inclination in return as he continued his watch. She hired security based on appearance as much as skill. They set the tone that it was expected that their clientele behave respectfully. What their clients didn’t know was that the males were the least of their worries.
Her lips tilted at that thought, all the while ignoring the lust-filled stares sliding over her body. Her bronzed face and breasts seemed to attract the most attention, so she made sure the heavy mounds were pushed high in the leather dress. She wouldn’t want to disappoint anyone. Her lips curved more in amusement. The club was a place of fantasy, of eroticism, among other things… so dressing to entice was good business.
Mortals amused her. Most were too intimidated to approach. The fact that she was in stiletto boots lifting her over six feet tall assured that only the overly confident would attempt to get in her path.
She smiled when Brigitte intercepted her on her way to the private rooms. She tilted her head down to look at the female Mageia. “Problem?”
The petite redhead was their pupil. She was intelligent, skilled, and in the last five years of their acquaintance, Tasha had found herself considering the female a friend. One who spoke the answer quietly, for Tasha’s ears only. “Possibly. Nastia went to check on Gabby and Arianna twenty minutes ago.” The Mageia’s French accent had tamed through the years, but still came through when she was nervous or wanted to use it to her best advantage. This was nerves.
Tasha nodded and blew out a sigh. Twenty minutes wasn’t good. It could be that her twin had checked on the females and then gone to one of the other private rooms with an admirer, or it potentially meant there was a problem. Nastia was capable of handling anything, but her tactics weren’t always the cleanest.
“Who was the client?”
Gabby and Arianna were highly sought after. Both were beautiful and enjoyed their work, which showed in the way they enterta
ined.
“Sergi Rykov. A Russian businessman and his mistress. There was nothing in his background to indicate trouble. I’m going to take a look now.” She paused. “No alarms were tripped, but I don’t like it,” Brigitte said, and though her features appeared sensual and serene as she smiled at the females and males staring in their direction, Tasha knew better.
They skirted the dance floor currently packed full of humans and Mageia gyrating to the seductive beat of the music. They took a left and Tasha entered a code into a door, which slid open. They stepped into an elegant hallway; the door, snapping shut in their wake, cut off all but the dull thumping bass. Wall sconces softly lit the corridor in a way that was meant to feel inviting. Plush patterned floor runners and small tables with flowers added to the ambience. Their patrons paid well to take advantage of the private rooms.
Tasha could hear moaning and sharp smacks of leather on skin coming from one of the soundproofed rooms. Although Brigitte’s mortal hearing wouldn’t pick up any of it, hers could. Another left took them down a long hallway decorated with mirrors, and antique chairs sat outside each door.
Her eyes narrowed. “Which room?” Gau was supposed to be guarding the hall, and there would likely have been a guard for the businessman as well. Instead they were in an empty space.
A harsh male scream echoed through one of the walls, telling her exactly what room her sister was in before the Mageia had a chance to reply.
“Six.” Brigitte had noticed Gau’s absence but wouldn’t have heard the scream. All the same, the female gracefully slipped a blade from beneath her black sheath dress and Tasha stifled a smile. Her sister wouldn’t have left anything for the Mageia to threaten, but Tasha needed to know what the situation was and how well Nastia had taken care of it.
Brigitte is with me. What am I dealing with? Tasha asked her twin through their mental link before Brigitte had a chance to activate the two-way mirror. A security precaution such as video surveillance was frowned on in an establishment such as theirs. The mirrors left a way for her guards to do spot-checks, but each room was also equipped with several alarm buttons for the safety of their employees.
