URBAN: What A Thug Wants
Page 16
“I’m not your Uncle Maxwell, Leo. I’m not dead. I made it.”
“But they wanted you dead.” Lionel got up. “I got to go.”
“No!” Antwon screamed at him and his friend turned around. “Son, go cool off.”
“I’m good.”
“Yo, do you realize who you’re talking to? I know you. Go cool off. Go back to Giselle. Just chill out.”
Lionel looked at his friend. He nodded his head. He hated to see him in the hospital bed. It just made his mind wander. The tension and the silence reminded him of being back in that main office. He shook his head. He didn’t have to go back to that place. His friend Antwon was right
“I’m going to be at the Brooklyn Marriott if you need me.” Lionel and Antwon exchanged hands.
“Don’t worry about that bitch ass nigga. When I get out of here, and this thing cools down, you and me gonna put that nigga under the dirt. Don’t go crazy tonight thinking about him.”
“I hear you. Call me if you need me.”
Chapter 9
Giselle stared out the window. It had been two hours since Lionel left her. Her heart was racing. She didn’t imagine this night going down like this. When she thought of the night that she would lose her virginity, it would be her wedding night. If it wasn’t her wedding night, the guy would at least stay with her through the end of the night. She picked up her phone. It was just after midnight.
“Where are you Lionel?” She muttered to herself. She went to bed and closed her eyes.
The first thing she smelled were pancakes. For a second she forgot where she was. The strong smell of pancakes, orange juice, and bacon reminded her of home. Was everything she had been going through some long nightmare? Was she finally back home? Was her mother downstairs in the kitchen and her father at the table eating already. She could almost see them. Maybe it was all just something she made up When she opened her eyes, she saw Lionel placing a tray on the bed. No, she was still in Brooklyn.
“What time did you get back?” She asked him.
“I was here a little after 1. When I got upstairs, I saw that you were sleeping, so I went downstairs and added another night. We can leave tomorrow.” He told her. His voice was dry and he was barely looking at her. She could tell that something was wrong but didn’t know how to approach him. So instead, she ate the breakfast. They were both silent. The only thing that could be heard were their forks scraping the plate. After they finished, he called down for room service to clear their plates.
“What happened last night?” She waited for his answer. He just sighed and undressed. She sensed that he was tired and wasn’t in the mood, but she needed answers. “Lionel?”
“Antwon was shot.’
“Oh my God! Is he okay?”
“Yes, he’s fine. It was just his leg.” He sat on the bed. “I really don’t want to talk about it.”
“Okay.”
“ I just want to close my eyes.”
“Okay.”
He turned to the side, away from her. She rubbed his back. He was so tense, but the more she rubbed, he started to relax. She felt his body drop. She turned him over. He looked at her and she kissed his lips softly. When she pulled away, he brought her lips back and kissed her again. He took off the robe she had on. Her skin was still so soft. He kissed her shoulders, then her neck, and then went back to the lips. She let him have his way with her.
He was on top of her, she opened her legs to let him in. He didn’t though. He just kissed her and then bit her lip. She moaned and it made him get even more stiff. He slid his hands in between her legs. She was moist and when he licked the tip of his fingers, she still tasted just as sweet. He did not want to hold back any longer. He entered her slowly. She was still tight, but this time she didn’t flinch. The look in her eyes showed that she was determined. She was going to let him have his way, and that made him want her even more.
He was entering and exiting her at a moderate speed. She dug her nails into his back and nibbled on his ear lobe. He was slamming into her. The sounds of her moisture were getting louder and louder. He was hitting her G- spot and was holding on to the orgasm, when he looked down and saw that her eyes were closed, he kissed her forehead. She opened her eyes and looked at him.
“You want me?” He asked her.
“What?”
“Do you want me?” He plunged into her and she shook.
“Yes!” She moaned.
“And do you want me?”
“Fuck…” She climaxed and hugged him tight. “No.” She told him. He stopped and looked at her. “I think I’m falling in love with you.” She confessed.
He started pumping faster and harder. She was screaming and howling. He looked at this beauty. How could he had been so lucky? But the more he thought of everything that was going on, he told himself that this wouldn’t last. He gripped her shoulders and plunged all the way in. He pulled out and exploded against her thighs.
“I want to leave New York City.” She confessed to him later that night. They’d spent the whole day in that hotel room. Every time Giselle suggested to leave, he brushed it off. He didn’t want to deal with the outside world; at least not yet.
“Oh yeah?”
“Don’t get me wrong, I can see how this a great city, but the longer I stay here, I’ll change.”
“You’re afraid of changing?”
“I’m afraid of doing something and not being able to turn back.” She looked at him. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Aren’t you always?” He chuckled.
“If I left New York City, will you come with me?”
He looked at Giselle. Her eyes told him that she was serious. He opened his mouth to say no, but when he really thought about it. He wanted to escape. He needed to get away. He knew that everything would only get worse. He wanted a way out.
“I would but it’s not that easy. We can’t just get up and leave. We need money.”
“I have money.”
“What?”
“I never told anyone this, but my parents left me with money. When I turn 18, I’ll get it all.”
“How much is it?”
“Close to a million dollars.” She whispered.
“How close?”
“$800,000.”
Lionel sat up immediately. He knew that she was telling the truth. He could tell by the look on her face.
“Wow.” Was all he managed to get out?
“In about ten months that money will be mine. We can take it and leave this place.” She told him. She was expecting him to turn down her offer. After all, ten months was quite some time to wait.
“Okay, I’m with you.”
“Really?” She smiled and laughed. When he nodded, she hugged him.
“But there is something I have to do first.”
“What is it?”
“I have to kill the person that shot at Antwon.”
Giselle’s heart dropped. She didn’t want to believe it but the sincerity in his voice showed that he wasn’t playing. He’d been thinking about since he left the hospital. He wanted to listen to Antwon’s advice, but the image of his friend laid up, drove him crazy. He couldn’t think of his friend just laying there while the person who shot him was walking this Earth. That thought ran loops in his head. He had to find him and kill him.
“Did you say that you were going to kill someone?”
“This person held a gun to Antwon’s head.”
“But he didn’t!”
“The gun got jammed. This guy ain’t no saint. He’s a killer!”
“And what’s that going to make you?” Giselle shouted. “If you do this, you will be just like him.”
“I got to get out of here.” Lionel got up and started to get dressed. Giselle kept trying to stop him but he moved away.
“Don’t go. Don’t go like this.”
“I’m going to be back by tonight.”
“You don’t have to leave.”
“I’m going to be back by tonight.’ He left
and slammed the door behind him.
Chapter 10
Giselle looked at the time. It was now ten hours since Lionel left. She tried calling his phone but it went straight to voicemail. He didn’t answer any of his text messages either. She was beyond worried. She saw the hate in his eyes as he left. He wasn’t thinking rationally. What did he think he could do? Was he really going to kill someone? Giselle flashed back to the determined look in his eyes. She knew that he could.
She needed to do something to get her mind off of it. She took a shower, got dressed, and headed out. She just needed to walk once or twice around the neighborhood. The fresh air will help clear her head. Hopefully by the time she came back from the walk Lionel would be back. He would then tell her that he couldn’t go through with it. Maybe she could convince him to leave his drug dealing past behind. They can find crappy paying legitimate jobs. It wouldn't be much, but at least they could last the ten months until she had her money. Maybe they could take some classes or figure out what business they could open up.
“I’ll be right back.” She told the person at the front desk. The woman nodded and she left out the glass doors. The yellow cabs pulled up and she told the drivers that she was going to walk it. The busy Downtown Brooklyn streets were noisy. She turned the corner and found a park. The first bench that she saw she sat down. She closed her eyes and said a prayer. She prayed that God could get Lionel to stop and think about what he was doing. Then she prayed that he got to the hotel safe and they could somehow turn their lives around. She didn’t want them to be victims of the streets.
“Please God, please.” She repeated to herself. A tear rolled down from her eyes. “Please don’t let him do anything stupid.” She prayed again. “Please. I can’t take anymore. You took away my parents, don’t take away Lionel away from me too.” She pleaded. “Please.”
She took out her phone and dialed Lionel’s number but once again it went to voicemail. She felt something in the pit of her stomach. Something was wrong. She could sense it. Lionel would have called her or at least make sure that his phone was on. She sent him a text message.
“Tell me that everything is okay. Call me back as soon as you get this. I’m worried.” She looked at her phone, hoping for a miracle. But nothing happened. She wiped the tears from her eyes and got off of the bench.
She walked to the hotel like a zombie. When the woman at the front desk smiled to her, she didn’t do or say anything. Her feet moved on its own. She called for the elevator and as the door closed, she wanted to cry again. But she shook her body. She had to stop herself from getting carried away. She had to think positively. Isn’t that what she learned after her parents died? Positive thoughts.
She crashed on the bed and turned on the TV. She was going to watch a movie and by the time it was finished, Lionel would either be back or have called her back. She found some romantic film and got lost in it. She forced herself to care about it and pretty soon it worked. She didn’t even think about Lionel, she just watched the movie, and then the movie after that. The second movie finished, but she wasn’t awake to watch the ending. By the time the middle of the movie was on, she had already drifted into sleep.
“Tonight on the news at 10, talks for peace in the Middle East continues. The President went to visit hoping that he can get both parties to agree on some sort of peace. Also searches for the seven year old missing girl from the Bronx continues. She was last seen in front of the school. Witnesses say a large Caucasian male was seen talking to her. There is no word of any suspects.”
The news stirred Giselle out of her sleep. She opened her eyes and saw the two anchors discussing the news. She sat up and barely listened it until she heard the borough Brooklyn, that she paid attention.
“Police are asking for your help. Out of Brooklyn, New York, there was a shooting outside of a club just last night. Witnesses have said that there were two gunshots. Police have no leads on the suspect or suspects. The victim is expected to live. He is listed in stable condition. He will be released soon. Authorities believe that the shooting may have been drug related.” The anchor informed the audience watching.
“That must be about Antwon.” Giselle said to herself. “I was just there at that club.’
“Another story out of Brooklyn. There was another shooting not too far from the club just two hours ago. Witnesses at the scene said that there were a series of gunshots heard.”
“It just started out of nowhere. All you heard was pop! Pop! Pop!” One of the witnesses recalled.
“I was so scared. I just held on to my daughter.” Another witness told the reporter.
“Residents in the area were left running and ducking for their lives. When the police arrived they found numerous rounds of shell casings and spent bullets. Also on the scene there were two bodies. Both of the bodies were announced dead on arrival.”
The news anchor’s voice drowned out. Giselle didn’t listen any longer. She stopped listening after she heard the word “dead”.
“Oh no! I told him not to go. He should have stayed here.” She took out her phone and dialed Lionel’s cell phone.
“I’m not able to pick up my phone right now. If it’s important, just leave your name and I’ll get back to you when I can.” His voicemail said to her once again. His phone was still off. She started crying. She knew it. The feeling she had in the pit of her stomach intensified. She turned back to the screen. Both of victims were identified as males. That’s when she knew for sure and without a doubt, that Lionel was dead.

Chapter 1
Giselle walked slowly back to her room. Ever since her parents died, everything was going off track. Between being relocated from North Carolina to New York City, having an abusive foster mother, falling in love, and now attending a funeral. Her life almost didn’t seem real. She kept trying to wake up, convinced that she was in a horrible nightmare, but she finally had to accept, that this was her life. No matter how much she tried to deny it or fight it, this was her life and either she got used to it, or took control of it. But right now her main focus was getting her clothes ready for the funeral.
As she looked for her funeral clothes, Laura, another young woman who lived in the foster home woke up.
“Hey.” She rubbed her eyes. “What time is it?” She yawned.
“It’s 6 in the morning.” Giselle answered her in a zombie state.
“Hey, are you okay?” She reached out to touch her shoulders but Giselle just jerked her away. “Giselle, what’s going on?”
“I have a funeral to get to.”
“Is that today?”
“Yes.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
“What you apologizing to this bitch for?” Ms. Rita stumbled in.
Giselle looked at Ms. Rita and could see that she was still high. She wasn’t going to even acknowledge her, especially not today. Lionel always told her to fight and stand up for herself, but she was too tired. She woke up exhausted and just wasn’t in the mood for Ms. Rita. She knew that if she said anything to her, that it would just start an argument.
“Not now Ms. Rita.” Laura said in the sweetest tone.
“Shut the fuck up!” She screamed so loudly that it woke the other children. “Do you see what you ungrateful bitches did?”
“Ungrateful?” Giselle spoke softly.
“You got something to say?” Ms. Rita walked over to her rocking back and forth. “Or are you sad because someone else around you died?”
That was the final straw
. Giselle stood up and looked Ms. Rita in the eye. There was an anger coming from her that she’s never felt before. She knew she’d been holding back her feelings ever since she found out about the death, but looking at Ms. Rita, she was shaking. She was so angry that her body was actually trembling.
“You little fucking bitch.” The words came from Giselle’s mouth, but even she couldn’t believe it. “If I ever hear you say anything negative about me or anybody else in this apartment-”
“Are you threatening me?”
“No, I’m informing you. I’m sick and tired of your shit. Next time anything happens, I’m going to ACS, the police, anybody that will listen to me about all the bullshit you do. We come home to an empty fridge, constantly having to clean the house, and you’re fucking high all the time. From now on, Laura and I are running this place. We are cashing the checks, buying the food, and if you’re nice we’ll give you a nice allowance.”
The room was silent after that. Laura sat up on the bed and hugged her legs. She closed her eyes and rocked back and forth. She was waiting for the huge fight. She’s tried to stand up to Ms. Rita before but after getting beaten up, she decided to just keep her head down.
‘Who the fuck do you think you’re talking to?” Ms. Rita balled up her fist.
“I’m talking to a crackhead that’s dependent on money that I help bring in.” Giselle laughed. Ms. Rita went to punch her, but she moved out of the way. She turned around and slapped her. When her hand connected with Ms. Rita’s face, she couldn’t believe it. Ms. Rita doubled back and charged at her, but she just moved out of the way again.
