Mental note: Do not piss off the sorceress.
An instant later, a wave of blue energy spilled from the window and blanketed the chamber.
My tattoos lit up as Diamonique’s life force pulsed through my body. Talk about a head rush. Magic pulsed through my veins, my heart hammering with the force of a lion.
And then the blue wave blinked out of existence, and reality returned to normal.
Octurna broke the silence.
“Many foes have tried to destroy me over the years, but it was my own heart that almost defeated me. Love makes fools of us all.” A cold edge crept into her voice. “It will never happen again.”
There was an eerie finality to her words, like she had forsaken her humanity.
Octurna made another hand gesture, and the air vibrated. The portrait of Arion, Diamonique, and Octurna materialized in front of us. The sorceress regarded the century-old painting for a beat.
“The past is dead, and it is time to let go of old memories and foolish dreams.”
And with these words, the portrait ignited. Flames greedily consumed the paint and canvas. Ashes drifted through the chamber.
The sorceress turned to me. “Although it did not happen as I planned, Diamonique’s power is now ours. With it, we can face our real enemy. Are you ready to go to war, Slayer?”
I was so pumped up by this latest victory and the boundless power suffusing my body, I would have punched Satan himself in the face.
With a flick of her wrist, Octurna restored my trusty arsenal. The spiked silver chain-whip, rune-engraved submachine gun, silver jacketed stakes, and my gauntlet were back where they belonged. I was ready for the next battle. But first, I needed to take care of some unfinished business.
As if the sorceress had read my mind, she tilted her head at the windows. A dark portal opened before us. It was pitch black, with no hint of what awaited me on the other side.
“Tomorrow we will fight new battles. Today, we make peace with the past. Return to the vampire monastery and finish what you started.”
I nodded in agreement and strode into the void. As I stepped through the window, I found myself in a cramped, pitch-black space. I inhaled stale air.
My hands pushed against the walls of the confined space. I was inside a wooden box.
Not a box, I corrected myself. A coffin.
I pressed against the wood above me, and it gave way. I rose out of the coffin like some damned creature of the night and raised my submachine gun. Around me, vampires emerged from their dark slumber, not yet aware of my presence.
I targeted the first vamp.
Depressed the trigger.
And rained hellfire down on the nest of monsters.
The Night Slayer had returned to fulfill my dark promise.
This time I was burning the unholy abattoir to the ground. And tomorrow, I’d take on the Shadow Cabal. I was done fucking around. And judging by the cold laughter ringing in my head as I cut down the vampire horde, Octurna was right there with me.
Dragon blood pumped through my veins, and magic sizzled under my skin. I wasn’t the man I used to be, but if it meant I could stop those bastards from claiming one more innocent life, it was worth it.
Maybe I’d have to become a monster to fight them. But Octurna and I would save the world from their darkness—no matter the cost.
