  ‘Very well, Miss Martens. Perhaps you have seen what may be our best course.’

  He gave a long, almost whimpering sigh.

  ‘And as a matter of fact, perhaps this is the best time to make this announcement. I shall probably be away from my desk for the next few weeks. My doctor tells me I am suffering from strain, acute strain. The whole business of taking over a force that has been allowed to — Well, let us say, that needed perhaps a certain amount of rejuvenating has taken a lot out of me. Yes, a lot. So I have been recommended a period of sick leave, some weeks. Perhaps a month. Or more. Yes. So, perhaps it is best, after all, to announce, in some quieter, more dignified fashion, the successful conclusion of the Boy Preacher murder case. Yes?’

  ‘Yes, sir,’ Harriet said.
